Interaction of moving breathers with an impurity
We analyze the influence of an impurity in the evolution of moving discrete
breathers in a Klein--Gordon chain with non-weak nonlinearity. Three different
behaviours can be observed when moving breathers interact with the impurity:
they pass through the impurity continuing their direction of movement; they are
reflected by the impurity; they are trapped by the impurity, giving rise to
chaotic breathers. Resonance with a breather centred at the impurity site is
conjectured to be a necessary condition for the appearance of the trapping
phenomenon.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of the Third Conference, San Lorenzo

Aspects of Discrete Breathers and New Directions
We describe results concerning the existence proofs of Discrete Breathers
(DBs) in the two classes of dynamical systems with optical linear phonons and
with acoustic linear phonons. A standard approach is by continuation of DBs
from an anticontinuous limit. A new approach, which is purely variational, is
presented. We also review some numerical results on intraband DBs in random
nonlinear systems. Some non-conventional physical applications of DBs are
suggested. One of them is understanding slow relaxation properties of glassy
materials. Another one concerns energy focusing and transport in biomolecules
by targeted energy transfer of DBs. A similar theory could be used for
describing targeted charge transfer of nonlinear electrons (polarons) and, more
generally, for targeted transfer of several excitations (e.g. Davydov soliton).Comment: to appear in the Proceedings of NATO Advanced Research Workshop

Play and Learn: Using Video Games to Train Computer Vision Models
Video games are a compelling source of annotated data as they can readily
provide fine-grained groundtruth for diverse tasks. However, it is not clear
whether the synthetically generated data has enough resemblance to the
real-world images to improve the performance of computer vision models in
practice. We present experiments assessing the effectiveness on real-world data
of systems trained on synthetic RGB images that are extracted from a video
game. We collected over 60000 synthetic samples from a modern video game with
similar conditions to the real-world CamVid and Cityscapes datasets. We provide
several experiments to demonstrate that the synthetically generated RGB images
can be used to improve the performance of deep neural networks on both image
segmentation and depth estimation. These results show that a convolutional
network trained on synthetic data achieves a similar test error to a network
that is trained on real-world data for dense image classification. Furthermore,
the synthetically generated RGB images can provide similar or better results
compared to the real-world datasets if a simple domain adaptation technique is
applied. Our results suggest that collaboration with game developers for an
accessible interface to gather data is potentially a fruitful direction for
future work in computer vision.Comment: To appear in the British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC), September

Structural lubricity: Role of dimension and symmetry
When two chemically passivated solids are brought into contact, interfacial
interactions between the solids compete with intrabulk elastic forces. The
relative importance of these interactions, which are length-scale dependent,
will be estimated using scaling arguments. If elastic interactions dominate on
all length scales, solids will move as essentially rigid objects. This would
imply superlow kinetic friction in UHV, provided wear was absent. The results
of the scaling study depend on the symmetry of the surfaces and the
dimensionalities of interface and solids. Some examples are discussed
explicitly such as contacts between disordered three-dimensional solids and
linear bearings realized from multiwall carbon nanotubes.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Resonant steps and spatiotemporal dynamics in the damped dc-driven Frenkel-Kontorova chain
Kink dynamics of the damped Frenkel-Kontorova (discrete sine-Gordon) chain
driven by a constant external force are investigated. Resonant steplike
transitions of the average velocity occur due to the competitions between the
moving kinks and their radiated phasonlike modes. A mean-field consideration is
introduced to give a precise prediction of the resonant steps. Slip-stick
motion and spatiotemporal dynamics on those resonant steps are discussed. Our
results can be applied to studies of the fluxon dynamics of 1D
Josephson-junction arrays and ladders, dislocations, tribology and other
fields.Comment: 20 Plain Latex pages, 10 Eps figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
