Alapvető numerikus reprezentációk működése és sérüléseik = Functioning and impairment of numerical representations
Több numerikus reprezentáciĂł kapcsán találtunk Ăşj eredmĂ©nyeket. (1) A szubitizáciĂł (tárgyak számosságának gyors megállapĂtása) esetĂ©ben kimutattuk, hogy a vizuális folyamatokon belĂĽl az alakzat detekciĂł felelĹ‘s a jelensĂ©gĂ©rt. (2) A párosság reprezentáciĂłjában elsĹ‘kĂ©nt mutattuk ki közvetlenĂĽl az arab számreprezentáciĂł szerepĂ©t kĂ©palkotĂł eljárással. (3) ElkĂ©szĂtettĂĽk az elsĹ‘ standardizált magyar nyelvű, numerikus zavart vizsgálĂł tesztet, amellyel serdĂĽlĹ‘ Ă©s felnĹ‘tt fejlĹ‘dĂ©si diszkalkuliások vizsgálhatĂłak. A munka másik rĂ©szĂ©ben a számjelölĂ©s szerepĂ©t vizsgáltuk a numerikus feldolgozásra. Kimutattuk, hogy (1) a jelĂ©rtĂ©k használata egyszerű numerikus feladatok esetĂ©ben könnyebb, mint a helyiĂ©rtĂ©k használata, (2) a helyiĂ©rtĂ©k erĹ‘sebben támaszkodik a bal intraparietális szulkuszra Ă©s a felsĹ‘ laterális frontális terĂĽletekre, (3) a jelölĂ©s hatás kimutathatĂł kisiskolás Ă©s Ăłvodás korban, (4) a hatás nem fĂĽgg a korábbi számjelölĂ©sek ismeretĂ©tĹ‘l, Ă©s számos, a jelölĂ©s mellĂ©kes tulajdonságának a hatása is kizárhatĂł. Az adatok mögött javaslatunk szerint egy tárgy alapĂş reprezentáciĂł áll, ahol a helyiĂ©rtĂ©k használata erĹ‘sebb absztrakciĂłt igĂ©nyel. A tárgyreprezentáciĂł meglĂ©tĂ©t Ăşjabb vizsgálatokkal közvetlenebbĂĽl is sikerĂĽlt kimutatni. A számjelölĂ©sek kapcsán egy Ăşj taxonĂłmiát javasoltunk, Ă©s a kultĂşrtörtĂ©neti adatokat is Ăşj megvilágĂtásban Ă©rtelmeztĂĽk. | Several new results were found about numeric representations. (1) It was confirmed that subitizing (fast object enumeration) is the result of pattern detection. (2) With brain imaging method we have confirmed the role of the Arabic number form in parity representation. (3) We have made the first standardized numerical disability test in Hungarian, which is capable to measure developmental dyscalculia in adolescent and adult subjects. In the other part of our work, the role of number notation was investigated in numerical tasks. It was shown that (1) a sign-value notation can be used more easily in simple numerical tasks than a place-value notation, (2) the place-value notation relies more intensively on left intraparietal sulcus and superior lateral prefrontal areas than the sign-value notation, (3) notation effect is observable even in preschool children, (4) the effect do not depend on the knowledge of other number notations or on surface properties of the notations. We suggested that an object based number representation might be responsible for the notation effect, and place-value notation requires a stronger abstraction. Presence of the object representation was confirmed more directly with additional studies. Regarding the number notations a new notation taxonomy was proposed
A mennyiségdetekció feladványa : két rivális elmélet ütköztetése
Tárgyak mennyisĂ©gĂ©nek megállapĂtásakor 4-ig az emberek viszonylag gyorsan számolnak (szubitizálnak), mĂg 4 fölött relatĂve lelassulnak (számolás). A mennyisĂ©gek Ă©szlelĂ©sĂ©ben tapasztalhatĂł mintázatkĂĽlönbsĂ©g magyarázatában uralkodĂł kĂ©tfĂ©le megközelĂtĂ©st teszteltĂĽk. Az analĂłg mennyisĂ©gi reprezentáciĂł (vagy mentális számegyenes) kĂ©pviselĹ‘i szerint a mennyisĂ©gi reprezentáciĂłk (WEBER törvĂ©nyĂ©nek megfelelĹ‘) jellemzĹ‘i miatt könnyebb a 4 alatti számok diszkrimináciĂłja, ugyanis itt a számok között a relatĂv kĂĽlönbsĂ©g viszonylag nagy, ám 4 fölött a kĂĽlönbsĂ©g csökken Ă©s ennek következtĂ©ben a mennyisĂ©g felismerĂ©se több idĹ‘t vesz igĂ©nybe. A másik megközelĂtĂ©s szerint a tárgy alapĂş vizuális figyelmi rendszer (prekonceptuális) összetevĹ‘i okozzák a szubitizáciĂł Ă©s a számolás (reakciĂłidĹ‘kben) kirajzolĂłdĂł kĂĽlönbsĂ©gĂ©t: nĂ©gy alatt ugyanis pusztán a foglalt tárgyfájlokat (vagy vizuális indexeket) kell megszámolni, mĂg nĂ©gy fölött a tárgyfájlok más objektumokra valĂł áthelyezĂ©se plusz idĹ‘t igĂ©nyel. Vizsgálatunkban a mentális számegyenes egyĂ©ni kĂĽlönbsĂ©geit, a vizuális index egyĂ©ni mutatĂłszámait Ă©s a szubitizáciĂł terjedelmĂ©t korreláltattuk egymással. Az eredmĂ©nyek szerint a mentális számegyenes jĂłsolja be a szubitizálciĂł terjedelmĂ©t, mĂg a vizuális rendszer általában a pontok számolásának sebessĂ©gĂ©t. There are two explanations accounting for the phenomena of subitizing (counting objects up to 4 is relatively fast, but above 4 it gets slower). Exponents of the analog magnitude system theory advocate that in case of numbers smaller than 4, discrimination is easy (according to Weber's Law) because there are relatively great differences in quantity between these numbers. Rising above 4, decreasing differences eventuate expanding quantity detection times. From another viewpoint different reaction times are caused by the preconceptual features of an object based visual attention system: below 4 it is enough to count the occupied object files, while above 4, transfering object files onto other elements requires more time. In our experiment individual differences of subitizing are correlated with indexes of mental magnitude sensitivity and object file capacity. The index of subitization should show stronger correlation with the background system of the phenomenon itself. Our results point to a high correlation between the accuracy of subitizing and mental magnitude sensitivity. On the other hand we also found high correlation between subitizing response times and sensitivity of the visual attention system. These results let us have a more accurate picture of the background processes of subitizing
A mentális számegyenes tĂşloldala : a negatĂv számok
A három lehetĹ‘sĂ©get a reakciĂłidĹ‘, a távolsághatás Ă©s a SNARC hatás segĂtsĂ©gĂ©vel mĂ©rjĂĽk. Az eredmĂ©nyek szerint az elöjeles gyorseljárás (3) Ă©s a negatĂv számok tĂĽkrözĂ©se (2) működik. A SNARC hatás a jelen paradigmában nem volt kimutathatĂł. Mental number line is a phylogenetically old system, with the main function of representing numerosity. It was not studied formerly whether it can manipulate negative numbers or not. In our experiment three possible processes were tested in a number comparison task. (1) Negative and positive numbers are stored in an integrated representation. (2) Negative numbers are mirrored into the positive range of the mental number line, where they are processed as positive values. (3) A shortcut strategy takes into consideration only the sign of the number regardless of the absolute value. These three hypotheses were contrasted by measuring reaction time, distance effect and SNARC effect. Results suggest that sign shortcut (3) and negative number mirroring (2) was used to process negative numerals. SNARC effect was not present in this paradigm
Symbolic number comparison and number priming do not rely on the same mechanism
In elementary symbolic number processing, the comparison distance effect (in a comparison task, the task is more difficult with smaller numerical distance between the values) and the priming distance effect (in a number processing task, actual number is easier to process with a numerically close previous number) are two essential phenomena. While a dominant model, the approximate number system model, assumes that the two effects rely on the same mechanism, some other models, such as the discrete semantic system model, assume that the two effects are rooted in different generators. In a correlational study, here we investigate the relation of the two effects. Critically, the reliability of the effects is considered; therefore, a possible null result cannot be attributed to the attenuation of low reliability. The results showed no strong correlation between the two effects, even though appropriate reliabilities were provided. These results confirm the models of elementary number processing that assume distinct mechanisms behind number comparison and number priming
HABITS OF COMMUNICATION OF INTERNET USERS
This report is about a small scale study where frequent
Internet users´ habits
of communication (in the use of the Internet and mobile phone systems)
in Hungary were investigated with questionnaires that
were made accessible via the Internet. The results show that among the
frequent Internet users the `dependent´ and `alienated´ types of usage are not characteristic. The
latter one can be markedly distinguished from other intense use of the net.
Among the intense users of the Internet email has become the prevailing
tool of communication compared to other means. The anxiety of people who
thought the lack of authentication dangerous has not proved true: methods
develop among the users to check the trustworthiness of the source.
The employers´ concerns seem to be supported, however,
to the effect that employees, when they have the opportunity, do gladly resort
to forms of communication by which they can discretely
tend to their private matters
