Chromatographic formation of a triadic band of lithium in hydrated LTA zeolite: An investigation on lithium isotope separation effects by ion exchange

published online 12 April 2017Lithium concentrations [Li] and isotopic ratios [Li-7]/[Li-6] were measured for effluent fractions from a biphasic zeolite column. The biphasic state was ascribed to a mixture of hydrated Linde Type A (LTA) zeolites, [Li-0.008(NH4)(0.92)]A and [Li-0.33(NH4)(0.67)]A, which were formed by Li ion exchange from hydrated ammonium in the form (NH4)(12)[Al12Si12O48]center dot nH(2)O (NH(4)A). The biphasic Li band of the column was displaced by ion exchange with a solution of NH4NO3. A constant [Li] with a much lower level than the concentration of NHt(4)(_)(+) in the displacer (NH4NO3) was observed for the effluent from a short column. This constant lower level of [Li] was attributable to the biphasic state. On this [Li] plateau of the effluent, the level of [Li-7] shifted higher than the original isotopic composition of the Li feed, whereas Li-6 was concentrated on the biphasic zeolite solid. The accumulation of Li-6 in the zeolite proceeded by a mechanism of differential elution of Li-7 from the biphasic zeolite. For the long column experiment, a significant enrichment of Li-6 in the zeolite was observed, whereby a triadic band of Li was probably formed in the column. Two monophasic and a biphasic state were assigned. The biphasic band was deemed to push the monophasic bands forward, thereby enriching the monophasic bands with Li-7, while Li-6 accumulated at the end of the biphasic band. The trio structure of the Li band and isotopic discrimination in the band were analyzed. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. Phylogenetic analysis of host–symbiont specificity and codivergence in bioluminescent symbioses

Several groups of marine fishes and squids form mutualistic bioluminescent symbioses with luminous bacteria. The dependence of the animal on its symbiont for light production, the animal's specialized anatomical adaptations for harboring bacteria and controlling light emission, and the host family bacterial species specificity characteristic of these associations suggest that bioluminescent symbioses are tightly coupled associations that might involve coevolutionary interactions. Consistent with this possibility, evidence of parallel cladogenesis has been reported for squid–bacterial associations. However, genetic adaptations in the bacteria necessary for and specific to symbiosis have not been identified, and unlike obligate endosymbiotic associations in which the bacteria are transferred vertically, bacterially bioluminescent hosts acquire their light-organ symbionts from the environment with each new host generation. These contrasting observations led us to test the hypotheses of species specificity and codivergence in bioluminescent symbioses, using an extensive sampling of naturally formed associations. Thirty-five species of fish in seven teleost families (Chlorophthalmidae, Macrouridae, Moridae, Trachichthyidae, Monocentridae, Acropomatidae, Leiognathidae) and their light-organ bacteria were examined. Phylogenetic analysis of a taxonomically broad sampling of associations was based on mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cytochrome oxidase I gene sequences for the fish and on recA , gyrB and luxA sequences for bacteria isolated from the light organs of these specimens. In a fine-scale test focused on Leiognathidae, phylogenetic analysis was based also on histone H3 subunit and 28S rRNA gene sequences for the fish and on gyrB , luxA , luxB , luxF and luxE sequences for the bacteria. Deep divergences were revealed among the fishes, and clear resolution was obtained between clades of the bacteria. In several associations, bacterial species identities contradicted strict host family bacterial species specificity. Furthermore, the fish and bacterial phylogenies exhibited no meaningful topological congruence; evolutionary divergence of host fishes was not matched by a similar pattern of diversification in the symbiotic bacteria. Re-analysis of data reported for squids and their luminous bacteria also revealed no convincing evidence of codivergence. These results refute the hypothesis of strict host family bacterial species specificity and the hypothesis of codivergence in bioluminescent symbioses. © The Willi Hennig Society 2007.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73754/1/j.1096-0031.2007.00157.x.pd

Estimation of Uncertainty in Tracer Gas Measurement of Air Change Rates

Simple and economical measurement of air change rates can be achieved with a passive-type tracer gas doser and sampler. However, this is made more complex by the fact many buildings are not a single fully mixed zone. This means many measurements are required to obtain information on ventilation conditions. In this study, we evaluated the uncertainty of tracer gas measurement of air change rate in n completely mixed zones. A single measurement with one tracer gas could be used to simply estimate the air change rate when n = 2. Accurate air change rates could not be obtained for n ≥ 2 due to a lack of information. However, the proposed method can be used to estimate an air change rate with an accuracy of <33%. Using this method, overestimation of air change rate can be avoided. The proposed estimation method will be useful in practical ventilation measurements

In this experimental study, we seek to elucidate the effects of both emotional gratitude and emotional indebtedness on prosocial behavior towards outsiders. The participants (N = 54) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a gratitude condition, where participants were induced to experience considerable emotional gratitude and minimal emotional indebtedness; an indebtedness condition, where participants were induced to experience both considerable emotional gratitude and emotional indebtedness; and a neutral condition, where participants were not induced to experience either emotional gratitude or indebtedness. All participants were then requested by a confederate to complete a questionnaire as indicator of prosocial behavior. The results revealed no significant differences between and no interactions among the three conditions. These findings highlight the need to reconsider both the validity of any manipulations of emotional gratitude and indebtedness and how to measure prosocial behavior towards outsiders

The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of interstitial MR lymphography using Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide (SPIO) to detect sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in head and neck cancer. For two patients with cT2N0 squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, the submucosal injection of SPIO as well as sentinel lymph node navigation surgery (SLNNS) was performed before undergoing surgical treatment. SPIO was used for MR lymphography and Tc-99m phytate for SPECT. We compared the images by both modalities. Berlin blue stain was also performed postoperatively if SLNs had the uptake of SPIO. The lymph nodes with MR signal attenuation and those with hot spots were probed to be anatomically identical. All the lymph nodes detected as a SLN by a gamma-probe contained the blue granules from SPIO. These data suggest that SPIO can be a novel tracer for performing SLNNS and SLN biopsy in oral cancer patients with cN0 neck.博士(医学)・甲622号・平成26年3月17

AbstractIntroductionWe experienced two esophageal cancer patients who developed severe acute renal failure after neoadjuvant chemotherapy with cisplatin and 5-fluorourasil.Presentation of caseAfter administration of cisplatin, their serum creatinine increased gradually until they required hemodialysis and their renal failure was permanent. In both cases, renal biopsy examination indicated partial recovery of the proximal tubule, but renal function did not recover. After these events, one patient underwent definitive radiotherapy and the other underwent esophagectomy for their esophageal cancers, while continuing dialysis. Both patients are alive without cancer recurrence.DiscussionIn these two cases of cisplatin-induced renal failure, renal biopsy examination showed only slight disorder of proximal tubules and tendency to recover.ConclusionAlthough cisplatin-related nephrotoxicity is a well-recognized complication, there have been few reports of renal failure requiring hemodialysis in cancer patients. In this report, we present their clinical courses and the pathological findings of cisplatin-related renal failure
