OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of anaemia and iron deficiency and vitamin A status among school-aged children in rural Kazakhstan and identify factors associated with anaemia in this population. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design. SETTING: School-aged children in rural Kazakhstan. SUBJECTS: Socio-economic and anthropometric information was collected from 159 school-aged children living in the Kzyl-Orda region of Kazakhstan. Blood samples were collected and the concentrations of haemoglobin (Hb), serum iron, serum ferritin (SF), erythrocyte protoporphyrin (EP), serum retinol and beta-carotene, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation (TS) and other haematological indices were measured. RESULTS: Among the 159 children, the prevalence of anaemia and iron deficiency defined by the multiple criteria model (SF, TS and EP) was 27% and 13%, respectively. Nine per cent had iron-deficiency anaemia and 21% had serum retinol value < 1.05 micromol l(-1). Mean SF and serum iron concentrations and TS were significantly lower in anaemic children than in their non-anaemic peers, while TIBC and EP were significantly higher in children with anaemia. Hb was significantly correlated with serum iron and retinol concentrations. Serum retinol and SF concentrations and mean corpuscular volume were significantly correlated with Hb by multiple regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Anaemia among school-aged children in rural Kazakhstan appears to be related to iron indices and vitamin A status

Findings from recent studies by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency examining musculoskeletal atrophy in space and on Earth

The musculoskeletal system provides the body with correct posture, support, stability, and mobility. It is composed of the bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other connective tissues. Without effective countermeasures, prolonged spaceflight under microgravity results in marked muscle and bone atrophy. The molecular and physiological mechanisms of this atrophy under unloaded conditions are gradually being revealed through spaceflight experiments conducted by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency using a variety of model organisms, including both aquatic and terrestrial animals, and terrestrial experiments conducted under the Living in Space project of the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. Increasing our knowledge in this field will lead not only to an understanding of how to prevent muscle and bone atrophy in humans undergoing long-term space voyages but also to an understanding of countermeasures against age-related locomotive syndrome in the elderly

A Protein Complex Containing Mei5 and Sae3 Promotes the Assembly of the Meiosis-Specific RecA Homolog Dmc1

AbstractMeiotic recombination requires the meiosis-specific RecA homolog Dmc1 as well as the mitotic RecA homolog Rad51. Here, we show that the two meiosis-specific proteins Mei5 and Sae3 are necessary for the assembly of Dmc1, but not for Rad51, on chromosomes including the association of Dmc1 with a recombination hot spot. Mei5, Sae3, and Dmc1 form a ternary and evolutionary conserved complex that requires Rad51 for recruitment to chromosomes. Mei5, Sae3, and Dmc1 are mutually dependent for their chromosome association, and their absence prevents the disassembly of Rad51 filaments. Our results suggest that Mei5 and Sae3 are loading factors for the Dmc1 recombinase and that the Dmc1-Mei5-Sae3 complex is integrated onto Rad51 ensembles and, together with Rad51, plays both catalytic and structural roles in interhomolog recombination during meiosis

Differential prefrontal response to infant facial emotions in mothers compared with non-mothers.

A considerable body of research has focused on neural responses evoked by emotional facial expressions, but little is known about mother-specific brain responses to infant facial emotions. We used near-infrared spectroscopy to investigate prefrontal activity during discriminating facial expressions of happy, angry, sad, fearful, surprised and neutral of unfamiliar infants and unfamiliar adults by 14 mothers and 14 age-matched females who have never been pregnant (non-mothers). Our results revealed that discriminating infant facial emotions increased the relative oxyHb concentration in mothers\u27 right prefrontal cortex but not in their left prefrontal cortex, compared with each side of the prefrontal cortices of non-mothers. However, there was no difference between mothers and non-mothers in right or left prefrontal cortex activation while viewing adult facial expressions. These results suggest that the right prefrontal cortex is involved in human maternal behavior concerning infant facial emotion discrimination

Every one of us desires to have a healthy, happy life. However, in case of the excess or lack of well-balanced food always causes our health to have some kind of disorder. It has recently been marked out that what we call BMI, that means \u27body mass index\u27 has gone extremely low among young female people. Namely, the word BMI stands for the percentage of the balance between the height and weight of a body. Therefore, I have made an attempt to give a questionnaire on this problematic tendency to the students at Seisen University during the first class on \u27Nurition\u27. I have observed that some 88 students had no idea of BMI among 176 students, namely, half of them are quite ignorant about BMI. However, nearly 70% of them are found to be in an appropriate range of BMI, whereas 27% of them are somehow in a low range. Moreover, as far as their preferable weight is concerned, about 60% of them are rated to be quite low at BMI, as they have an inclination mainly to keep up with their slender figures, even although they are interested in being healthy. In conclusion, if they have a proper, correct understanding of the relation between their eating habit and their own health, they will understand that their physical beauty can go hand in hand with their healthy life
