Machines and machinations: The integrated care record service in the UK national health service
This paper examines the use of Actor Network Theory (ANT) as a lens to get a better understanding of the implementation of the Integrated Care Record Service (ICRS) in the UK National Health Service (NHS). Actor Network Theory has been deployed in various environments to achieve a better understanding of the roles of not only the humans but also the artifacts that constitute, in this case, healthcare networks of services and organisations. The theory is used as a means of supporting real world interventions, providing a richer understanding of complexities involved and thereby helps management to make better decisions. This study also explores Latour’s concept of machines as machinations, whose role is to translate other actors into the network. We propose ICRS as a fruitful empirical context for the use of ANT to support decision making for actors in health care provision. Actor Network Theory (ANT) is well-suited for use in the socio-technical evaluation of IS into the ICRS project because this approach treats human and non-human actors symmetrically. This approach facilitates a more thorough examination of the ways in which information technology is enabled or restricted in social processes
Charge and spin state readout of a double quantum dot coupled to a resonator
State readout is a key requirement for a quantum computer. For
semiconductor-based qubit devices it is usually accomplished using a separate
mesoscopic electrometer. Here we demonstrate a simple detection scheme in which
a radio-frequency resonant circuit coupled to a semiconductor double quantum
dot is used to probe its charge and spin states. These results demonstrate a
new non-invasive technique for measuring charge and spin states in quantum dot
systems without requiring a separate mesoscopic detector

Oxide-apertured microcavity single-photon emitting diode
We have developed a microcavity single-photon source based on a single
quantum dot within a planar cavity in which wet-oxidation of a high-aluminium
content layer provides lateral confinement of both the photonic mode and the
injection current. Lateral confinement of the optical mode in optically pumped
structures produces a strong enhancement of the radiative decay rate. Using
microcavity structures with doped contact layers, we demonstrate a
single-photon emitting diode where current may be injected into a single dot
Generalized Inverse Participation Ratio as a Possible Measure of Localization for Interacting Systems
We test the usefulness of a generalized inverse participation ratio (GIPR) as
a measure of Anderson localization. The GIPR differs from the usual inverse
participation ratio in that it depends on the local density of states rather
than on the single-electron wavefunctions. This makes it suitable for
application to many-body systems. We benchmark the GIPR by performing a
finite-size scaling analysis of a disordered, noninteracting, three-dimensional
tight-binding lattice. We find values for the critical disorder and critical

The c axis optical conductivity of layered systems in the superconducting state
In this paper, we discuss the c axis optical conductivity Re [sigma_c(omega)]
in the high T_c superconductors, in the superconducting state. The basic
premise of this work is that electrons travelling along the c axis between
adjacent CuO_2 layers must pass through several intervening layers. In earlier
work we found that, for weak inter-layer coupling, it is preferable for
electrons to travel along the c axis by making a series of interband
transitions rather than to stay within a single (and very narrow) band.
Moreover, we found that many of the properties of the normal state optical
conductivity, including the pseudogap could be explained by interband
transitions. In this work we examine the effect of superconductivity on the
interband conductivity. We find that, while the onset of superconductivity is
clearly evident in the spectrum, there is no clear signature of the symmetry of
the superconducting order parameter.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
