Effects of lengthscales and attractions on the collapse of hydrophobic polymers in water

We present results from extensive molecular dynamics simulations of collapse transitions of hydrophobic polymers in explicit water focused on understanding effects of lengthscale of the hydrophobic surface and of attractive interactions on folding. Hydrophobic polymers display parabolic, protein-like, temperature-dependent free energy of unfolding. Folded states of small attractive polymers are marginally stable at 300 K, and can be unfolded by heating or cooling. Increasing the lengthscale or decreasing the polymer-water attractions stabilizes folded states significantly, the former dominated by the hydration contribution. That hydration contribution can be described by the surface tension model, ΔG=γ(T)ΔA\Delta G=\gamma (T)\Delta A, where the surface tension, γ\gamma, is lengthscale dependent and decreases monotonically with temperature. The resulting variation of the hydration entropy with polymer lengthscale is consistent with theoretical predictions of Huang and Chandler (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci.,97, 8324-8327, 2000) that explain the blurring of entropy convergence observed in protein folding thermodynamics. Analysis of water structure shows that the polymer-water hydrophobic interface is soft and weakly dewetted, and is characterized by enhanced interfacial density fluctuations. Formation of this interface, which induces polymer folding, is strongly opposed by enthalpy and favored by entropy, similar to the vapor-liquid interface.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure

Synthesis of lead zirconium titanate by a simple, low-energy consumption hydrothermalmeans is being reported. The precursor materials have been chosen and the method is tailoredso that the process becomes economical and offers low lead loss. The synthesised powdershave been analysed by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and TGA. The results show the formation oftetragonal PZT nanoparticles with an average yield of ~75 per cent. On the basis of FTIR, theproduct formation is understood to proceed via the formation of a three metal cation hydroxidecomplex, that under hydrothermal treatment undergoes conversion directly to form the tetragonalphase of lead zirconium titanate

The volatile growth in wireless networks over the last few years resembles the rapid growth of the Internet within the last decade. The current IPS presents a less security. Unfortunately, our work combined with the work of others show that each of these mechanisms are completely futile. As a result, organizations with deployed wireless networks are vulnerable to illegal use of, and access to, their internal communications

Microwave Combustion Synthesis of Silver Doped Lanthanum Ferrite Magnetic Nanoparticles

    Get PDF
Lanthanum ferrite (LaFeO3) and silver doped LaFeO3 powders were synthesized by a single step microwave combustion route using nitrates as precursors and glycine as a fuel. XRD analysis indicated the formation of cubic phase with the dopant peaks at 2θ values of 38.3°, 44.1° and 64.4° apart from the peaks corresponding to LaFeO3. As observed from the transmission electron micrographs, LaFeO3 exhibits particles with a larger size (mean size ~57 nm), significant decrease in particle size is observed for silver doped samples. The magnetic measurements reveal weak ferromagnetic nature of LaFeO3, while silver doped samples are ferromagnetic in nature. Lanthanum silver ferrite (x=0.25, A site) shows maximum coercivity (Hci=480.96G) with hysteresis loop at room temperature which is a clear sign of ferromagnetic ordering. The S shape of the curve implies the presence of domain wall movements in nanoparticles. Thermogravimetric analysis of the samples show stable behavior of the products.Defence Science Journal, 2013, 63(3), pp.285-291, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.63.238

Impact, Friction, Shock Sensitivities and DDT Behaviour of Advanced CMDB Propellants

    Get PDF
This paper reports results of impact, friction and shock sensitivities of CMDB propellants containing AP, RDX, PETN and their combinations. Results of impact and friction sensitivities indicate that CMDB propellants containing AP are highly sensitive and AP-based compositions are more impact and friction sensitive than RDX and PETN-based compositions, qnd that these sensitivities are proportionalto oxygen balance of the composition, which is in agreement withearlier findings. Inclusion of high explosives like RDX and PETN increases the shock sensitivity of CMDB formulations, whereas AP-based compositions are least shock sensitive. There exists are lationship between shock sensitivity and VOD of the individual oxidiser/high energy ingredient incorporated in the formulation. Shockamplitude values of 87 and 46 k bar in CMDB and DBP, as determinedby NOL card gap test, suggest that CMDB propellants are much more shock sensitive than DBP. Composite propellants are insensitive toshock, as they did not undergo detonation even at zero card gap. Results of DDT behaviour of CMDB propellants show that they aremore prone to deflagration to detonation transition under adverse conditions
