The Consultation-Liaison Mental Health program of the University Hospital “Virgen del Rocío”, in Seville, assists
to patients with emotional disturbances that negatively impact their illness (cancer, chronic pain, organ transplantation,
chronic diseases, etc.) and interfere with their recovery process. Some patients require psychotherapeutic care after
hospital discharge and a possible effective alternative would be the implementation of the MBSR (Mindfulness Based
Stress Reduction) program. The main purpose of this treatment program would be that patients took an adaptive emotional
response to the organic disease causing the reduction of the emotional disturbance and stopping the interference
in the course of the disease. This paper provides data from a pilot study of a group of patients who were administered
the program over eight group sessions. The results indicate that the program is useful to make affective symptomatology
decrease, since patients get to preserve their self-esteem and accept in a more adaptively way the limitations imposed
by his physical illness
Concerns, Mental Health, and Quality of Life in Living Kidney Donation–Parent Donor Candidates Worry Less about Themselves
Even though the majority of living kidney donor candidates appear in good mental health and show few concerns little is known concerning the influence of the type of donor-recipient relationship on donor candidates’ specific concerns with regard to kidney donation. 136 donor candidates at Virgen del Rocío University Hospital of Seville filled in the Scale of Concerns Regarding Living Kidney Donation of whom 105 donor candidates and their corresponding recipients (105 patients with End-Stage Renal Disease) were further evaluated with regard to mental health (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Beck Depression Inventory-II) and quality of life (SF-36 Health Survey). As hypothesized recipients scored higher on depression and lower on quality of life. Donor candidates intending to donate to their children were significantly less concerned about risks of donation for themselves compared to donor candidates donating to siblings. Our findings highlight the importance of the type of donor-recipient relationship to understand specific concerns of donor candidates and optimize psychosocial assessment and support. From an evolutionary perspective parents lack of concern about their own well-being can be seen as an altruistic behavior to increase children’s fitness at the (potential) expense of their own fitness
Bariatric surgery has become the most efficient technique in the treatment of morbid obesity. The goal of this
study was to analyze the differences between a bariatric surgery candidates group and a control sample in the variables
attachment, rumination, and referential thinking. The design of this study is ex post facto prospective. From the 285
subjects who participated in the study, 162 were bariatric surgery candidates. The other 123 participants were individuals
from the general population selected by convenience. For data collection was used the Cuestionario de Apego
Adulto (Adult Attachment Questionnaire), the Escala de Pensamiento Referencial (Referential Thinking Scale) and the
Escala de Respuestas Rumiativas (Ruminative Responses Scale). We conclude there is a larger prevalence of concerned
attachment in the group of candidates not suitable for bariatric surgery, as well as a greater presence of both referential
and ruminative thinking in the same group comparing to the other two groups
Gender Differences in Patients Candidates for Bariatric Surgery: Anxiety, Depression and Causal Attributions
candidatos a cirugía bariátrica.
Objective. To analyze the relationship between the psychological
variables type of attribution, anxiety and depressive symptoms according
to gender in a sample of patients with morbid obesity who are candidates
for bariatric surgery.
Material and methods. Observational, cross-sectional and single-center
study. 259 patients who were candidates for bariatric surgery were
selected from the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital, Seville. Templates
were used to collect sociodemographic and clinical data, as well as the
validated Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale instrument.
Results. Most of the patients had controllable attributions, although
women had a higher proportion of uncontrollable attributions. Regarding
anxiety and depressive symptoms, it was found that patients ineligible for
bariatric surgery presented higher levels of anxiety and depression. In
addition, there was a tendency for higher levels of anxiety and depressive
symptoms to be associated with controllable attributions, which is
controversial based on the available literature
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in recent years, being the third cause of death in developed countries. Although bariatric surgery seems to be the most effective method, a significant percentage of patients have suboptimal results. As a preventive measure, patients are previously evaluated to determine if they are suitable for surgery. The present study examines if the story of childhood obesity, the attachment and the satisfaction in the romantic relationship, are related with the diagnosis orientation. The sample was composed by 411 patients with morbid obesity, candidates for bariatric surgery, from the Hospital Virgen del Rocío in Seville. The data were obtained through sociodemographic and clinical templates, the Adult Attachment Questionnaire (Melero and Cantero, 2008) and a escale of the relationship satisfaction. The study concluded that the unsuitable subjects had in a larger proportion a story of childhood obesity, have an insecure attachment style and a lower level of satisfaction in their relationship, being more notable in the case of women. Therefore, it is necessary to continue investigating the psychological variables related to obesity in order to address these aspects in the preoperative phase through psychological treatments, to ensure a greater effectiveness in the fight against the obesityLa obesidad ha alcanzado en los últimos años proporciones épicas, siendo la tercera causa de muerte en los países desarrollados.
162 presentaban obesidad mórbida candidatas a dicha cirugía (72,76% mujeres y 27,33%
siendo las mujeres las que obtienen mayores puntuaciones en apego preocupadoThe aim of this study is to see if attachment and gender variables are linked in any way to
those bariatric surgery sufferenig morbid obesity candidates, in comparison with people that are
not. 274 people participated in this study; 162 suffered from morbid obesity and were candidates
to the surgery (72.76% were women and 27.33% were men); 112 people were included in the
control group and they didn’t suffer from morbid obesity (75% were women and 25% were men).
All of them were selected by the convenience method. The instruments used were: Adult
Attachment Questionnaire and socio-demographic and clinical data questionnaires. The results of
the study show that there is a higher preoccupied attachment prevalence in the group that is not suitable for the bariatric surgery. Regarding gender, there are significant differences: women
obtained higher scores in preoccupied attachment
Currently, the majority of the morbid obesity patients die due to the severity levels of
that disease, thus the bariatric surgery seems to be a good solution nowadays. Taking
into account the actual situation, this research tries to analyse the significantly
differences between a group of patients proposed to bariatric surgery, a group of
patients who are not proposed to bariatric surgery and a control sample with different
variables, such as anxiety, depression and self-steem, taking into account the possible
gender influence among all conditions. The sample is composed of 274 individuals.
The design was ex post facto prospective. The results of the research show significant
differences between the 3 groups in all the variables conditions. However, there are no significant differences with the male group in any of the variables conditions, except for

A currently very important line of research in psychology is about Ambivalent Sexism (that has
two sub-components: hostile sexism –SH- and benevolent sexism –SB-). This construct appears
related to health and psychosocial risk factors in the general female population. This research
aims to investigate the relationship between the ambivalent sexism and some features of the
professionals of mental health in Andalusia. Using a correlational methodology, we examined the
relationship between sexism and some socio-demographic and labor characteristics of 415
professionals working in public mental health services in Andalusia. The results showed that
scores in both types of sexism were quite low (less than those found in other studies), and
significant differences were found between men and women in sexism (men scored higher on
both types of sexism). Of all the network of mental health professions, clinical psychology seems
the less sexist. No significant differences were found in sexism depending on the theoretical
model (c-behavioural, psychoanalysis, systemic…), except with those who adopted a gender
perspective, which appeared as less sexist. Finally, sexism was negatively related to the
detection of problems associated with gender in the consultation, but not with training in gender
issues
