Full Coupled Channels Calculations were performed for the 16O(d,n)17F^{16}O(d,n)^{17}F and 16O(d,p)17O^{16}O(d,p)^{17}O transfer reactions at several deuteron incident energies from Elab=2.29E_{lab}=2.29 MeV up to 3.27 MeV. A strong polarization effect between the entrance channel and the transfer channels 16O(d,n)17F(1/2+,0.495)^{16}O(d,n)^{17}F(1/2^{+},0.495) and 16O(d,p)17O(1/2+,0.87)^{16}O(d,p)^{17}O(1/2^{+},0.87) was observed. This polarization effect had to be taken into account in order to obtain realistic spectroscopic factors from these reactions.Comment: 15 papes, 13 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

A highly Al-resistant dissimilatory sulphatereducing bacteria community was isolated from sludge of the wetland of Urgeiriça mine (community W). This community showed excellent sulphate removal at the presence of Al3+. After 27 days of incubation, 73,86 and 81% of sulphate was removed in the presence of 0.48, 0.90 and 1.30 mM of Al3+, respectively. Moreover,Al3+ was simultaneously removed: 55,85 and 78% of metal was removed in the presence of 0.48, 0.90 and 1.30 mM of Al3+, respectively. The dissociation of aluminiumlactate soluble complexes due to lactate consumption by dissimilatory sulphate-reducing bacteria can be responsible for aluminum removal, which probably precipitates as insoluble aluminium hydroxide. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene showed that this community was mainly composed by bacteria closely related to Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. However, bacteria affiliated to Proteus and Ralstonia were also present in the community

In this work, the development and evaluation of a hyphenated flow injection-capillary electrophoresis system with on-line pre-concentration is described. Preliminary tests were performed to investigate the influence of flow rates over the analytical signals. Results revealed losses in terms of sensitivity of the FIA-CE system when compared to the conventional CE system. To overcome signal decrease and to make the system more efficient, a lower flow rate was set and an anionic resin column was added to the flow manifold in order to pre-concentrate the analyte. The pre-concentration FIA-CE system presented a sensitivity improvement of about 660% and there was only a small increase of 8% in total peak dispersion. These results have confirmed the great potential of the proposed system for many analytical tasks especially for low concentration samples.

New extractants for separation of platinium-group metals from chloride solutions and their application to recycling processes

In this paper some results on the application of four N,N’-tetrasubstituted malonamide derivatives for the extraction and separation of platinum-group metals (PGMs) are presented. The above mentioned extractants were specifically synthesized in order to evaluate their efficiency for the extraction of a specific metal, or group of metals, from aqueous chloride matrices. Different behaviours were obtained towards platinum(IV) and/or palladium(II) extraction, all the N,N’-tetrasubstituted malonamide derivatives allowing the mutual separation of the two metal ions, depending on the HCl concentration. Generally, extraction experiments were carried out involving initial aqueous phases containing 100 mg/L of each metal isolate, in varying 1M to 8M HCl concentration ranges, and 0.05M extractant in 1,2- dichloroethane solutions. From the preliminary results obtained, one can conclude that HCl concentrations and the structure of the malonamide derivative play a crucial role on the efficiency shown for Pt(IV) and/or Pd(II) extraction. The efficiency of the stripping stage of the loaded organic phases is variable, depending on the N,N’-tetrasubstituted malonamide derivative, as well as on the metal ion involved; for Pt(IV), distilled water and 1M HCl were generally successful, whereas for Pd(II), thiourea in HCl gave better results. The overall data already achieved suggest that these extractants may be good candidates for further evaluation in PGMs separations from real solutions resulting from recycling processes

Teaching and developing as a teacher in contradictory times

Teaching has become a more and more complex activity. Existing literature suggests, amongst other issues, fragmentation of teachers’ work, increasing accountability, bureaucracy and public scrutiny (Esteve, 2000; Estrela, 2001; Hargreaves, 2001). Over the last years, massive school reform initiatives to increase teaching standards and student attainment have been put into place in many countries setting more pressure on schools and teachers. However, if greater demands are placed upon schools and teachers to face the challenges of today’s society and the diversity of expectations of today’s students, in general, their working conditions and opportunities to learn and develop professionally have not been congruent with their needs. In the digital era, lack of resources and equipment, disparities in the access to education from the part of students and their families and different pathways and opportunities for (student) teachers to learn how to teach and to develop as professionals co-exist in various parts of the world. These scenarios present different kinds of challenges for teachers in different countries.National Funds through the FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) and co-financed by European Regional Development Funds (FEDER) through the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program (POCI) through CIEC (Research Centre on Child Studies, of the University of Minho) with the reference POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007562CIEC – Research Centre on Child Studies, IE, UMinho (FCT R&D unit 317), PortugalStrategic Project UID/CED/00317/2013info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Weaning from mechanical ventilation (MV) is an important strategy to reduce morbidity and mortality in critical care patients. In this setting, this study aimed at evaluation of T-tube trial (TT) in weaning from MV. METHODS: Patient admitted in the ICU were included if they present the following inclusion criteria: MV > 24 hours, no neuromuscular disorders, PaO2/FiO2 ratio >200, hemodynamic stability, reversion of the cause of respiratory failure, adequate respiratory drive. All were submitted to TT. Failure was defined by the presence of one of these symptoms: RR > 30 ipm, hypoxemia, tachycardia, arrhythmia, hypertension or hypotension. After two hours of TT, patients without failure criteria were extubated. After 48 hours of adequate spontaneous respiration the patient was considered successful weaned. Results were considered significant if p 24 horas, ausência de doença neuromuscular, relação PaO2/FiO2 > 200, estabilidade hemodinâmica, reversão da causa da intubação traqueal e drive respiratório adequado.

Cystinuria is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by abnormal intestinal and renal tubular transport of L-cystine as well as of L-lysine, L-arginine and L-ornithine. This leads to excessive urinary excretion of amino acids, with the formation of kidney stones caused by the low solubility of L-cystine in the urine. In this study, an analytical method for simultaneous determination of these four amino acids in urine by capillary electrophoresis coupled to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (CE-ESI-MS) was developed and validated. Using standard solutions of L-cystine, L-lysine, L-arginine and L-ornithine, the amino acid detection limits by this method were 114.2, 61.3, 72.7 and 86.7 µmol L -1 . Standard solutions were injected in a silica capillary column (50 mm i.d. and 70 cm length) under 2 psi of pressure by 10 s. The separation occurred at 300 V cm -1 , using 1.0 mol L -1 formic acid in 10% methanol in water as the background electrolyte. The method was applied to the urine of a patient clinically diagnosed as a cystinuria carrier, which revealed the presence of 900.5 ± 5, 600.0 ± 2, 700.2 ± 1 and 500.0 ± 3 µmol L -1 of amino acid, respectively, and 75.3 ± 1 µmol L -1 of creatinine. The CE-ESI-MS method described here for analyzing L-cystine and other cystinuria-related amino acids is a sensitive and reliable diagnostic tool for characterizing and monitoring this disease. Veteran teachers' identity: what does the research literature tell us?

    Get PDF
This paper provides an overview of research on veteran teachers and teacher identity. It analyses issues at the personal, situated and professional levels that have been shown to impact on veteran teachers' identities. The search included empirical studies published in peer-reviewed journals between 2005 and 2016. In total, 19 papers were analysed. Findings revealed that many studies focused on veteran teachers' resilience. Issues concerning veteran teachers' identities are key to understanding why they remain in the profession and are able to sustain their motivation and commitment over time. Many veteran teachers portrayed in the literature built on their confidence regarding their professional competence and relied on internal and external issues to maintain their motivation and commitment to teaching. The role of emotions in the transformation of veteran teachers' identities and the permeable boundaries of the personal, situated and professional scenarios influencing veteran teachers' identities are highlighted in the paper.Financial Support by CIEC (Research Centre on Child Studies, IE, UMinho; FCT R&D unit 317, Portugal) by the Strategic Project UID/CED/00317/2013, with financial support of National Funds through the FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) and co-financed by European Regional Development Funds (FEDER) through the COMPETE 2020 - Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program (POCI) with the reference POCI-01-0145-FEDER-00756
