    Speech Recognition in Noise by Children with Hearing Loss as a Function of Signal-to-Noise Ratio

    As part of a larger study, the speech recognition in continuous and interrupted noise was measured for ten children with moderate-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss (HL), ages 6 to 16 years, at varying signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Children with bilateral amplification received 10 sentences at each of six SNRs with the 60 dBA noise at 180 degrees azimuth and the speech at 0 degrees azimuth. Sentences were randomly selected from a corpus of 1500 sentences taken from seven thematic categories. The continuous and interrupted speech-shaped noise was filtered to match the long-term average spectrum of the sentences. The average performance-intensity (PI) functions for the interrupted and continuous noise conditions were not significantly different. Children with HL received limited benefit from the interruptions in the noise and therefore might benefit from auditory training designed to take advantage of the silent intervals in noise. Based on the average PI function, an appropriate SNR to begin auditory training would be 6 dB

    I-BEAT: New ultrasonic method for single bunch measurement of ion energy distribution

    The shape of a wave carries all information about the spatial and temporal structure of its source, given that the medium and its properties are known. Most modern imaging methods seek to utilize this nature of waves originating from Huygens' principle. We discuss the retrieval of the complete kinetic energy distribution from the acoustic trace that is recorded when a short ion bunch deposits its energy in water. This novel method, which we refer to as Ion-Bunch Energy Acoustic Tracing (I-BEAT), is a generalization of the ionoacoustic approach. Featuring compactness, simple operation, indestructibility and high dynamic ranges in energy and intensity, I-BEAT is a promising approach to meet the needs of petawatt-class laser-based ion accelerators. With its capability of completely monitoring a single, focused proton bunch with prompt readout it, is expected to have particular impact for experiments and applications using ultrashort ion bunches in high flux regimes. We demonstrate its functionality using it with two laser-driven ion sources for quantitative determination of the kinetic energy distribution of single, focused proton bunches.Comment: Paper: 17 Pages, 3 figures Supplementary Material 16 pages, 7 figure

New amendments to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature are expected to regulate electronic publishing of new taxa and create a standard form for their registration (ZooBank). Responding to a perceived need, this editorial announces establishment of ZooKeys – a new online and print journal in zoological taxonomy and systematics, which aims to quickly respond and adapt to the newest developments in taxonomic publishing. Open Access is accepted as mandatory for ZooKeys. The rationale for and concept of ZooKeys is discussed in detail

    CLIC: a Two-Beam Multi-TeV e±e\pm Linear Collider

    The CLIC study of a high-energy (0.5 - 5 TeV), high-luminosity (1034 - 1035 cm-2 sec-1) e+e- linear collider is presented. Beam acceleration using high frequency (30 GHz) normal-conducting structures operating at high accelerating fields (150 MV/m) significantly reduces the length and, in consequence, the cost of the linac. Using parameters derived from general scaling laws for linear colliders, the beam stability is shown to be similar to lower frequency designs in spite of the strong wake-field dependency on frequency. A new cost-effective and efficient drive beam generation scheme for RF power production by the so-called "Two-Beam Acceleration" method is described. It uses a thermionic gun and a fully-loaded normal-conducting linac operating at low frequency (937 MHz) to generate and accelerate the drive beam bunches, and RF multiplication by funnelling in compressor rings to produce the desired bunch structure. Recent 30 GHz hardware developments and CLIC Test Facility (CTF) results are described

    Search for CP Violation in the Decay Z -> b (b bar) g

    About three million hadronic decays of the Z collected by ALEPH in the years 1991-1994 are used to search for anomalous CP violation beyond the Standard Model in the decay Z -> b \bar{b} g. The study is performed by analyzing angular correlations between the two quarks and the gluon in three-jet events and by measuring the differential two-jet rate. No signal of CP violation is found. For the combinations of anomalous CP violating couplings, h^b=h^AbgVb−h^VbgAb{\hat{h}}_b = {\hat{h}}_{Ab}g_{Vb}-{\hat{h}}_{Vb}g_{Ab} and hb∗=h^Vb2+h^Ab2h^{\ast}_b = \sqrt{\hat{h}_{Vb}^{2}+\hat{h}_{Ab}^{2}}, limits of \hat{h}_b < 0.59and and h^{\ast}_{b} < 3.02$ are given at 95\% CL.Comment: 8 pages, 1 postscript figure, uses here.sty, epsfig.st

    Precision Electroweak Tests of the Standard Model

    The present status of precision electroweak data is reviewed. These data include measurements of e+e- -> f+fbar, taken at the Z resonance at LEP, which are used to determine the mass and width of the Z boson. In addition, measurements have also been made of the forward-backward asymmetries for leptons and heavy quarks, and also the final state polarisation of the tau-lepton. At SLAC, where the electron beam was polarised, measurements were made of the left-right polarised asymmetry, A_LR, and the left-right forward-backward asymmetries for b and c quarks. The mass, MW, and width, GW, of the W boson have been measured at the Tevatron and at LEP, and the mass of the top quark, Mt, has been measured at the Tevatron. These data, plus other electroweak data, are used in global electroweak fits in which various Standard Model parameters are determined. A comparison is made between the results of the direct measurements of MW and Mt with the indirect results coming from electroweak radiative corrections. Using all precision electroweak data fits are also made to determine limits on the mass of the Higgs boson. The influence on these limits of specific measurements, particularly those which are somewhat inconsistent with the Standard Model, is explored. The data are also analysed in terms of the quasi model-independent epsilon variables. Finally, the impact on the electroweak fits of the improvements in the determination of the W-boson and top-quark masses, expected from the Tevatron Run 2, is examined.Comment: 80 pages, 36 Figures, Late
