    Social Networking Sites As Tools For Sexual Perversion Among Students Of University Of Nigeria, Nsukka

    The use of online social networking tools like blackberry messenger, face book, 2go, Nimbuzz, yahoo messenger, etc, continues to increase rapidly among all age groups and segments of the society, presenting new opportunities for the exchange of sexual information  as well as for potentially unsafe encounters. This study using the survey research design and hinged on questionnaires and personal interview as instruments, explored the influence of social networking sites as tools for sexual perversion among students of University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Anchored on the technological  determinism and uses and gratifications theories, the study found out that social networking tools  actually contribute to UNN students sexual perversion and that there is an increasing adoption of the use of these tools, especially black berry messenger, 2go and facebook in that order. The study also discovered that majority of the students do not consider contents on these sites as being offensive. The study recommended that the use of SNSs should be regulated and regulators should device ways of detecting, exposing and punishing anybody found exchanging sexually explicit or implicit content or engaging in online sex.     Corporate Social Responsibility in Higher Institutions: A Study of Kogi State University, Anyigba

    The study seeks to examine the role of Kogi State University in terms of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) and how its host communities have been positively influenced by its programmes. The study arose out of the need to finding a lasting solution to the increasing wave of attacks on the university by some aggrieved residents and hoodlums from the host communities. The study employed survey method whereby  questionnaire, interview and field observations were used in gathering data on the university and its host communities. The sample size was drawn using Taro Yamane formula. The data for this study were analyzed using simple percentages and chi-square technique. Findings have revealed that KSU has played a considerable role in its CSR to its host communities. However, the host communities are not satisfied. The study notes that CSR is the necessary ingredients for continued peaceful cooperation within the communities it operates, and an important tool for mutual trust and goodwill between organization and its publics. KSU therefore need to equip its public relations unit with the necessary human and material resources to enable it constantly survey the feeling of its publics so that it can sustain harmonious relationship

    Assessing the Effectiveness of Illustrations in Print Media Advert of Home Appliances

    In this study, attempts were made to ascertain the attention getting power of illustrations in print media advert of home appliances, the interrelatedness of the illustrations to the advert messages, clarity and the ability to create buying interest. Survey research design method was adopted for the study and questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. In this study it was discovered that, though, the illustrations attract attention to an advert they are not too related to the message of the advert and very difficult for the audience to decode at the first contact and at the same time does not propel buying interest in the audience. As a result, it was recommended that relevant illustrations should be used or be entirely left out. The illustrations should bring out the benefit of the product as the case may be.     Use of Social Networking Sites and Academic Performance among Students of Selected Tertiary Institutions in Kogi State

    This study assessed the use of Social Networking Sites and Academic Performance among Students of Tertiary Institutions in Kogi State with a focus on Facebook, by looking into the specific use of facebook among students of some selected higher institutions in Kogi state (KSU, FPI and FCE; its level of usage; and also to identify the possible effects of facebook on their academic performance. Anchored on uses and gratifications theory, the study employed survey research method and relied on questionnaires as instrument for the collection of primary data. A sample of 384 students was selected from the students’ total population of 23,474 using fitcher formula. Through multi-stage sampling technique, the questionnaire was proportionately administered in each of the schools on the randomly selected students. The data were quantitatively analyzed using tables showing frequencies and simple percentages. Results revealed amongst other things that, Students use facebook primarily to escape from boredom, for communication; make new friends; update status; chats; post/comment on photos; and admonition among others. Finding also reveals that majority of the students hardly ever visit the site during class period, studying hours or miss classes because of facebook; that facebook usage does not have negative effect on the students’ academic performance (except on their spoken and written communication). The study concludes that the utilization of social media by students of tertiary institutions in Kogi state portends both beneficial results of the uses and gratifications highlighted in this study which show that facebook has a significant positive influence on, and limited danger to, the academic performance of students and recommends among other things that students should be encouraged to adequately utilize the potentials of facebook for academic excellence and also that, lecturers should look out for and completely discourage the use of facebook and other social networking sites gadgets during classes

    Nigerian media coverage of medical progress on the development of COVID-19 vaccine

    There is a global shift in discource on issues related to COVID-19 with greater attention paid to the vaccine. COVID-19. Despite this, the literature on media coverage of COVID-19 is yet to be extended to media coverage of issues related to medical progress on a vaccine for the virus. The objective of the current study was to fill this gap by examining how Nigerian media report COVID-19 vaccine development In doing so, attention was paid to the frequency of coverage, sources of stories as well as story type used. Two newspapers and TV stations were sampled for the current study. The current study made use of content analysis with a code sheet as the instrument for data collection. The result of the current study revealed that only 23% of the media stories on COVID-19 were related to vaccine development. Additionally, most of the stories made use of official sources as well as straight news. Comparatively, newspapers covered more in vaccine development than TV. The implications of these results on medical communication and theory are discussed

    This study aimed to describe the challenges confronting female journalists in Enugu State, Nigeria. A total of 35 female journalists with the mean age of 28 years and years of practice that range from 5-15 years provided narrative account on their experiences through a semi-structured interview that lasted between one to one and half hours. The results showed that the challenges confronting female journalists include: discrimination from news sources and colleagues at work, sexual harassments, and family roles. The respondents also reported that discouragements from family members also constitute part of the challenges. The implication of these results on social identity theory is explored. Based on the result of this study, the researcher concludes that women-journalists are confronted with career related challenges not because of their performance on the job but because of the fact that they are women.Keywords: challenges, journalism, women, and practice
