    Determine the Association Between Nurses Self-Concept and Clinical Performance Among Nursing Students

    Self-concept in clinical performance had an important role in applying competencies and self-concept in clinical performance influenced to quality care of nursing students. Self-concept is the key point for patient care by the student nurses which is established with continues education, gaining knowledge, learning skills and making attitudes. The purpose of the study is to determine the association between nurses self concept and clinical performance among nursing students. Descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in the school of nursing at Jinnah hospital Lahore. The study data were collected using a questionnaire which consisted of Nursing Self Concept Questionnaire (NSCQ) and Six Dimension Scale of nurse performance 6-(DSNP). Pearson Correlation test was used to explore the relationship of variables. The results of the study show that clinical performance and professional self-concept are related. Results: The findings of this study revealed that there is poor practices of nurses regarding bed bath of critically ill patients. Conclusion: This study has described an important basic nursing care that is bed-bath practice in critically ill patient. Although, bed-bath is a routine nursing procedure, critical care nurses in the current study had poor skills and practices regarding it.     Recent developments in nutraceuticals and functional foods have confirmed that bioactive components present in our diet play a major therapeutic role against human diseases. Moreover, there is a huge emphasis on food scientists for identifying and producing foods with better bioactive activity, which can ultimately provide wellness and well-being to human health. Among the several well-known foods with bioactive constituents, fish has always been considered important, due to its rich nutritional values and by-product application in food industries. Nutritionists, food scientists, and other scientific communities have been working jointly to uncover new bioactive molecules that could increase the potential and therapeutic benefits of these bioactive components. Despite the innumerable benefits of fish and known fish bioactive molecules, its use by food or pharmaceutical industries is scarce, and even research on fish-based nutraceuticals is not promising. Therefore, this review focuses on the current information/data available regarding fish bioactive components, its application as nutraceuticals for therapeutic purposes in the treatment of chronic diseases, ethnic issues related to consumption of fish or its by-products.     UPLC-MS: An Emerging Novel Technology and Its Application in Food Safety

    Over the past decade, food safety has become an important issue worldwide due to higher incidences of food contamination. Currently, one of the great challenges in food safety is the analysis of emerging food contaminants. Moreover, the scope, relevance, and level of food safety and testing have never been in such complexity than in today’s global marketplace. In recent years, a novel technology ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled with mass spectroscopy (MS) has been developed to estimate the food contaminants, as well as food components with better accuracy, sensitivity, precision, and high throughput. UPLC–MS works on van Deemter principle, which states that, the flow rate of smaller particles are much faster in compare with large particles as well as unfolding the correlation of flow rate and plate height. Additionally, various food components as well as food contaminants such as vitamins, amino acid, metabolite identification, adulteration, forensic testing, toxicity studies, phytoconstituents, pesticide in agriculture, antibiotic residue, hormones, dyes and pigment analysis can be performed using UPLC–MS.     Effectiveness of Health Education on Knowledge and Practice Regarding the Importance of Well-Balanced Nutrition Among School Students

    Introduction: Students are the future of the nation they spend more time in school then home. They need to know about the importance of a balanced diet. Balanced nutrition is important for the students, basis for lifetime health, strength, and intellectual abilities in the students. Balanced nutrition in school students give information, and skills for healthy food selection which enhance the health and prevent diseases. Methods: Quasi-experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of health education on knowledge and practice regarding the importance of well-balanced nutrition among school students with (n=70) in the school of Ali Raza Abad Raiwind Road Lahore, Pakistan. The educational interventional program involves four weeks of intervention about the importance of well-balanced nutrition. Results: The results of the study showed that there is significance effectiveness of health education on knowledge and practice regarding the importance of well-balanced nutrition among school students. A total of (n=70) students participated in this study, the mean score of the pre-data collection was 17.17 with the standard deviation of 3.526, and after the educational interventional program the mean score of post data collection was 27.07 with the standard deviation 2.845, and the difference between pre and post mean score was 9.900 which was a statistically significant difference pre and post data collection. Conclusions: The study findings revealed that health education on the importance of well-balanced nutrition was effective by improving the knowledge and practice of school students.     Mechanistic Insight into the role of Vitamin D and Zinc in Modulating Immunity Against COVID-19: A View from an Immunological Standpoint

    The pathophysiology of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is characterized by worsened inflammation because of weakened immunity, causing the infiltration of immune cells, followed by necrosis. Consequently, these pathophysiological changes may lead to a life-threatening decline in perfusion due to hyperplasia of the lungs, instigating severe pneumonia, and causing fatalities. Additionally, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can cause mortality due to viral septic shock, resulting from unrestrained and backfiring immune reactions to the pathogen. Sepsis can cause premature organ failure in COVID-19 patients, as well. Notably, vitamin D and its derivatives and minerals, such as zinc and magnesium, have been reported to improve the immune system against respiratory illnesses. This comprehensive review aims to provide updated mechanistic details of vitamin D and zinc as immunomodulators. Additionally, this review also focuses on their role in respiratory illnesses, while specifically delineating the plausibility of employing them as a preventive and therapeutic agent against current and future pandemics from an immunological perspective. Furthermore, this comprehensive review will attract the attention of health professionals, nutritionists, pharmaceuticals, and scientific communities, as it encourages the use of such micronutrients for therapeutic purposes, as well as promoting their health benefits for a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing

    Biosurfactant derived from probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus exhibits broad-spectrum antibiofilm activity and inhibits the quorum sensing-regulated virulence

    Antimicrobial resistance by pathogenic bacteria has become a global risk to human health in recent years. The most promising approach to combating antimicrobial resistance is to target virulent traits of bacteria. In the present study, a biosurfactant derived from the probiotic strain Lactobacillus acidophilus was tested against three Gram-negative bacteria to evaluate its inhibitory potential on their biofilms, and whether it affected the virulence factors controlled by quorum sensing (QS). A reduction in the virulence factors of Chromobacterium violaceum (violacein production), Serratia marcescens (prodigiosin production) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (pyocyanin, total protease, LasB elastase and LasA protease production) was observed at different sub-MIC concentrations in a dose-dependent manner. Biofilm development was reduced by 65.76%, 70.64% and 58.12% at the highest sub-MIC levels for C. violaceum, P. aeruginosa and S. marcescens, respectively. Biofilm formation on glass surfaces exhibited significant reduction, with less bacterial aggregation and reduced formation of extracellular polymeric materials. Additionally, swimming motility and exopolysaccharides (EPS) production were shown to be reduced in the presence of the L. acidophilus-derived biosurfactant. Furthermore, molecular docking analysis performed on compounds identified through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of QS and biofilm proteins yielded further insights into the mechanism underlying the anti-QS activity. Therefore, the present study has clearly demonstrated that a biosurfactant derived from L. acidophilus can significantly inhibit virulence factors of Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria. This could provide an effective method to inhibit the formation of biofilms and QS in Gram-negative bacteria

    Deciphering the Molecular Mechanism Responsible for Efficiently Inhibiting Metastasis of Human Non-Small Cell Lung and Colorectal Cancer Cells Targeting the Matrix Metalloproteinases by Selaginella repanda

    Selaginella species are known to have antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic as well as anticancer effects. However, no study has examined the cytotoxic and anti-metastatic efficacy of Selaginella repanda (S. repanda) to date. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the potential anti-metastatic properties of ethanol crude extract of S. repanda in human non-small-cell lung (A-549) and colorectal cancer (HCT-116) cells with possible mechanisms. Effect of S. repanda crude extract on the growth, adhesion, migration and invasion of the A-549 and HCT-116 were investigated. We demonstrated that S. repanda crude extract inhibited cell growth of metastatic cells in a dose and time dependent manner. Incubation of A-549 and HCT-116 cells with 100–500 µg/mL of S. repanda crude extract significantly inhibited cell adhesion to gelatin coated surface. In the migration and invasion assay, S. repanda crude extract also significantly inhibited cellular migration and invasion in both A-549 and HCT-116 cells. Moreover, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and real-time PCR (RT-PCR) analysis revealed that the activity and mRNA level of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and membrane type 1-matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) were inhibited. While the activity of tissue inhibitor matrix metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1); an inhibitor of MMPs was stimulated by S. repanda crude extract in a concentration-dependent manner. Therefore, the present study not only indicated the inhibition of motility and invasion of malignant cells by S. repanda, but also revealed that such effects were likely associated with the decrease in MMP-2/-9 expression of both A-549 and HCT-116 cells. This further suggests that S. repanda could be used as a potential source of anti-metastasis agent in pharmaceutical development for cancer therapy
