Nonlinear interactions with an ultrahigh flux of broadband entangled photons
We experimentally demonstrate sum-frequency generation (SFG) with entangled
photon-pairs, generating as many as 40,000 SFG photons per second, visible even
to the naked eye. The nonclassical nature of the interaction is exhibited by a
linear intensity-dependence of the nonlinear process. The key element in our
scheme is the generation of an ultrahigh flux of entangled photons while
maintaining their nonclassical properties. This is made possible by generating
the down-converted photons as broadband as possible, orders of magnitude wider
than the pump. This approach is readily applicable for other nonlinear
interactions, and may be applicable for various quantum-measurement tasks.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Accepted to Phys. Rev. Let
Characterization of energy storage devices for constant power applications
In this paper, a few known characterization techniques for supercapacitors have been evaluated with the purpose of being able to predict the roundtrip efficiency of an energy storage system under constant power application. It is found that the user cannot rely on a single characterization method since the methods based on small signal disturbance are not very precise when the model is subjected to large signal variations.Also, methods based on large signal disturbance will not be very precise when subjected to small signal tests. By comparing the analytically estimated constant power round trip efficiency with experimental data, it is concluded that both models can give acceptable accuracy if a relevant DC bias is used
Lorentz transformations of open systems
We consider open dynamical systems, subject to external interventions by
agents that are not completely described by the theory (classical or quantal).
These interventions are localized in regions that are relatively spacelike.
Under these circumstances, no relativistic transformation law exists that
relates the descriptions of the physical system by observers in relative

Relativistic Doppler effect in quantum communication
When an electromagnetic signal propagates in vacuo, a polarization detector
cannot be rigorously perpendicular to the wave vector because of diffraction
effects. The vacuum behaves as a noisy channel, even if the detectors are
perfect. The ``noise'' can however be reduced and nearly cancelled by a
relative motion of the observer toward the source. The standard definition of a
reduced density matrix fails for photon polarization, because the
transversality condition behaves like a superselection rule. We can however
define an effective reduced density matrix which corresponds to a restricted
class of positive operator-valued measures. There are no pure photon qubits,
