    "Measuring the Cost of Imperfect Information in the Tokyo Housing Market"

    The cost of imperfect information is estimated in the real estate market of resale condominiums in central Tokyo by using a new, comprehensive data set of resale condominium transactions. The results suggest a substantial cost. Specifically, if information were perfectly available and marketing time is null, sellers would get benefits of 10.58% based on average interest rate, 31.28% on gross rent and 22.59% on net rent, against imputed rent of their property. Buyers spend 1,042,000 Yen on search activities for one transaction, which would be saved if information were prefect. This cost amounts to be equivalent to 13.2% of buyers' average annual income.

Although theoretical analyses of morphogenesis exist, the molecular basis of shell development remains unclear. We compared expression patterns of the decapentaplegic (dpp) gene in the shell gland and mantle tissues at various developmental stages between coiled-shell and non-coiled-shell gastropods. RESULTS: We analyzed the expression patterns of dpp for the two limpets Patella vulgata and Nipponacmea fuscoviridis, and for the dextral wild-type and sinistral mutant lineage of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. The limpets had symmetric expression patterns of dpp throughout ontogeny, whereas in the pond snail, the results indicated asymmetric and mirror image patterns between the dextral and sinistral lineages. CONCLUSION: We hypothesize that Dpp induces mantle expansion, and the presence of a left/right asymmetric gradient of the Dpp protein causes the formation of a coiled shell. Our results provide a molecular explanation for shell, coiling including new insights into expression patterns in post-embryonic development, which should aid in understanding how various shell shapes are formed and have evolved in the gastropods.This study was supported by the JSPS Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research 15104009

    A non-obese, diet-induced animal model of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in Wistar/ST rats compared to Sprague-Dawley rats

    Background: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a subtype of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is a potentially progressive liver disease that can lead to cirrhosis. Obesity increases the risk of NAFLD/NASH, but this disease can also be observed in non-obese individuals. Methods: We investigated the metabolic and histopathological changes in 13 obesity-resistant Slc:Wistar/ST rats fed a high-fat and high-cholesterol (HFC) diet for 9 weeks, and also retrospectively compared the results of 41 Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats that were previously fed with the same protocol to the results of the Slc:Wistar/ST rats. Results: Of the 13 Slc:Wistar/ST rats fed an HFC diet containing 1.25% or 2.5% cholesterol, 11 (84.6%) developed histologically proven NASH without obesity, an increased visceral fat volume, insulin resistance, histopatological severe lobular inflammation and severe hepatic fibrosis. The HFC diets significantly increased the levels of mRNA encoding collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1). The SD rats also developed NASH without obesity, an increased visceral fat volume and insulin resistance, but the metabolic and histopathological effects, such as lower serum adiponectin levels, higher serum leptin levels, histopatological severe lobular inflammation and hepatic fibrosis, seemed to be more pronounced in the SD rats than in the Slc:Wistar/ST rats. Conclusions: These two rat models may reflect the human etiology of NASH that is influenced by dietary factors, and the obesity-resistant Slc:Wistar/ST rat model may be particularly useful for elucidating the pathophysiological mechanism of the so-called “lean NASH”

    The Endocannabinoid 2-Arachidonoylglycerol Produced by Diacylglycerol Lipase α Mediates Retrograde Suppression of Synaptic Transmission

    SummaryEndocannabinoids are released from postsynaptic neurons and cause retrograde suppression of synaptic transmission. Anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) are regarded as two major endocannabinoids. To determine to what extent 2-AG contributes to retrograde signaling, we generated and analyzed mutant mice lacking either of the two 2-AG synthesizing enzymes diacylglycerol lipase α (DGLα) and β (DGLβ). We found that endocannabinoid-mediated retrograde synaptic suppression was totally absent in the cerebellum, hippocampus, and striatum of DGLα knockout mice, whereas the retrograde suppression was intact in DGLβ knockout brains. The basal 2-AG content was markedly reduced and stimulus-induced elevation of 2-AG was absent in DGLα knockout brains, whereas the 2-AG content was normal in DGLβ knockout brains. Morphology of the brain and expression of molecules required for 2-AG production other than DGLs were normal in the two knockout mice. We conclude that 2-AG produced by DGLα, but not by DGLβ, mediates retrograde suppression at central synapses

    Plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a marker for renal outcome of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) (U-CARE study 3)

    Introduction ACE cleaves angiotensin I (Ang I) to angiotensin II (Ang II) inducing vasoconstriction via Ang II type 1 (AT1) receptor, while ACE2 cleaves Ang II to Ang (1-7) causing vasodilatation by acting on the Mas receptor. In diabetic kidney disease (DKD), it is still unclear whether plasma or urine ACE2 levels predict renal outcomes or not. Research design and methods Among 777 participants with diabetes enrolled in the Urinary biomarker for Continuous And Rapid progression of diabetic nEphropathy study, the 296 patients followed up for 9 years were investigated. Plasma and urinary ACE2 levels were measured by the ELISA. The primary end point was a composite of a decrease of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by at least 30% from baseline or initiation of hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. The secondary end points were a 30% increase or a 30% decrease in albumin-to-creatinine ratio from baseline to 1 year. Results The cumulative incidence of the renal composite outcome was significantly higher in group 1 with lowest tertile of plasma ACE2 (p=0.040). Group 2 with middle and highest tertile was associated with better renal outcomes in the crude Cox regression model adjusted by age and sex (HR 0.56, 95% CI 0.31 to 0.99, p=0.047). Plasma ACE2 levels demonstrated a significant association with 30% decrease in ACR (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.044 to 2.035, p=0.027) after adjusting for age, sex, systolic blood pressure, hemoglobin A1c, and eGFR. Conclusions Higher baseline plasma ACE2 levels in DKD were protective for development and progression of albuminuria and associated with fewer renal end points, suggesting plasma ACE2 may be used as a prognosis marker of DKD.Trial registration number UMIN000011525

    Search for solar flare neutrinos with the KamLAND detector

    We report the result of a search for neutrinos in coincidence with solar flares from the GOES flare database. The search was performed on a 10.8 kton-year exposure of KamLAND collected from 2002 to 2019. This large exposure allows us to explore previously unconstrained parameter space for solar flare neutrinos. We found no statistical excess of neutrinos and established 90% confidence level upper limits of 8.4 × 10^7 cm^−2 (3.0 × 10^9 cm^−2) on the electron antineutrino (electron neutrino) fluence at 20 MeV normalized to the X12 flare, assuming that the neutrino fluence is proportional to the X-ray intensity.https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.0245

    First measurement of the strange axial coupling constant using neutral-current quasi-elastic interactions of atmospheric neutrinos at KamLAND

    We report a measurement of the strange axial coupling constant gAsg_A^s using atmospheric neutrino data at KamLAND. This constant is a component of the axial form factor of the neutral current quasi-elastic (NCQE) interaction. The value of gAsg_A^s significantly changes the ratio of proton and neutron NCQE cross sections. KamLAND is suitable for measuring NCQE interactions as it can detect nucleon recoils with low energy thresholds and measure neutron multiplicity with high efficiency. KamLAND data, including the information on neutron multiplicity associated with the NCQE interactions, makes it possible to measure gAsg_A^s with a suppressed dependence on the axial mass MAM_A, which has not yet been determined. For a comprehensive prediction of the neutron emission associated with neutrino interactions, we establish a simulation of particle emission via nuclear de-excitation of 12^{12}C, a process not considered in existing neutrino Monte Carlo event generators. Energy spectrum fitting for each neutron multiplicity gives gAs=0.140.26+0.25g_A^s =-0.14^{+0.25}_{-0.26}, which is the most stringent limit obtained using NCQE interactions without MAM_A constraints
