Electronic structures of doped anatase TiO2\rm TiO_{2}: Ti1xMxO2\rm Ti_{1-x}M_{x}O_{2} (M=Co, Mn, Fe, Ni)

We have investigated electronic structures of a room temperature diluted magnetic semiconductor : Co-doped anatase TiO2\rm TiO_{2}. We have obtained the half-metallic ground state in the local-spin-density approximation(LSDA) but the insulating ground state in the LSDA+UU+SO incorporating the spin-orbit interaction. In the stoichiometric case, the low spin state of Co is realized with the substantially large orbital moment. However, in the presence of oxygen vacancies near Co, the spin state of Co becomes intermediate. The ferromagnetisms in the metallic and insulating phases are accounted for by the double-exchange-like and the superexchange mechanism, respectively. Further, the magnetic ground states are obtained for Mn and Fe doped TiO2\rm TiO_{2}, while the paramagnetic ground state for Ni-doped TiO2\rm TiO_{2}.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al

Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al (I =5/2+, T_1/2 = 644(25) ms) has been measured by means of the beta-NMR spectroscopy using a spin-polarized 31Al beam produced in the projectile fragmentation reaction. The obtained Q moment, |Q_exp(31Al)| = 112(32)emb, are in agreement with conventional shell model calculations within the sd valence space. Previous result on the magnetic moment also supports the validity of the sd model in this isotope, and thus it is concluded that 31Al is located outside of the island of inversion.Comment: 5 page

Measurement of parity-nonconserving rotation of neutron spin in the 0.734-eV p-wave resonance of 139La^{139}La

The parity nonconserving spin rotation of neutrons in the 0.734-eV p-wave resonance of 139La^{139}La was measured with the neutron transmission method. Two optically polarized 3He^3He cells were used before and behind a a 5-cm long 139La^{139}La target as a polarizer and an analyzer of neutron spin. The rotation angle was carefully measured by flipping the direction of 3He^3He polarization in the polarizer in sequence. The peak-to-peak value of the spin rotation was found to be (7.4±1.1)×103 (7.4 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-3} rad/cm which was consistent with the previous experiments. But the result was statisticallly improved. The s-p mixing model gives the weak matrix element as xW=(1.71±0.25)xW = (1.71 \pm 0.25) meV. The value agrees well with the one deduced from the parity-nonconserving longitudinal asymmetry in the same resonance

Fast switching NMR system for measurements of ground-state quadrupole moments of short-lived nuclei

A beta-ray detecting nuclear quadrupole resonance system has been developed at NSCL/MSU to measure ground-state electric quadrupole moments of short-lived nuclei produced as fast rare isotope beams. This system enables quick and sequential application of multiple transition frequencies over a wide range. Fast switching between variable capacitors in resonance circuits ensures sufficient power delivery to the coil in the beta-ray detecting nuclear magnetic resonance technique. The fast switching technique enhances detection efficiency of resonance signals and is especially useful when the polarization and/or production rate of the nucleus of interest are small and when the nuclear spin is large

    X-ray diffraction measurements of the c-axis Debye-Waller factors of YBa2Cu3O7 and HgBa2CaCu2O6

We report the first application of x-rays to the measurement of the temperature dependent Bragg peak intensities to obtain Debye-Waller factors on high-temperature superconductors. Intensities of (0,0,l) peaks of YBa2Cu3O7 and HgBa2CaCu2O6 thin films are measured to obtain the c-axis Debye-Waller factors. While lattice constant and some Debye-Waller factor measurements on high Tc superconductors show anomalies at the transition temperature, our measurements by x-ray diffraction show a smooth transition of the c-axis Debye-Waller factors through Tc_c. This suggests that the dynamic displacements of the heavy elements along the c-axis direction in these compounds do not have anomalies at Tc. This method in combination with measurements by other techniques will give more details concerning dynamics of the lattice.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Fabrication of fluorescent nanoparticles of dendronized perylenediimide by laser ablation in water

    Get PDF
Highly fluorescent organic nanoparticles with size of about 300 nm were prepared by nanosecond laser ablation of micrometer-sized powder of dendronized perylenediimide dispersed in water. The nanoparticle colloidal solution provided a fluorescence quantum yield of 0.58. The absorption and emission spectral studies demonstrated that the bulky dendron groups at the side bays of perylenediimide chromophore efficiently suppress the interchromophoric interactions in the nanoparticles. Fluorescence measurement on several single nanoparticles underlines that the prepared nanoparticles are bright and photo-stable enough to be a useful probe for single particle fluorescence investigation.</p

Quantum Critical Behavior and Possible Triplet Superconductivity in Electron Doped CoO2 Sheets

Density functional calculations are used to investigate the doping dependence of the electronic structure and magnetic properties in hexagonal Nax_xCoO2_2. The electronic structure is found to be highly two dimensional, even without accounting for the structural changes associated with hydration. At the local spin density approximation level, a weak itinerant ferromagnetic state is predicted for all doping levels in the range x=0.3x=0.3 to x=0.7x=0.7, with competing but weaker itinerant antiferromagnetic solutions. The Fermi surface, as expected, consists of simple rounded hexagonal cylinders, with additional small pockets depending on the cc lattice parameter. Comparison with experiment implies substantial magnetic quantum fluctuations. Based on the Fermi surface size and the ferromagnetic tendency of this material,it is speculated that a triplet superconducting state analogous to that in Sr2_2RuO4_4 may exist here.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
