The Perceptions of Entrepreneurs on the Strategic Role of Human Resource Management
AbstractIn literature, many researches on human resource management and entrepreneurship have been developed. However, there are only few researches on the perception of entrepreneurs on the strategic role of human resource management. This study investigates the role of human resource management on developing sustainable entrepreneurship and describes how human resource management practices and procedures can be used to help entrepreneurs to navigate their companies. Furthermore this study was applied to 85 entrepreneurs who attended “Entrepreneur Support Programme” in the Aegean Region of Turkey, supported by the Republic of Turkey Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organization (KOSGEB) in 2011. The obtained data from the questionnaires are analyzed through SPSS for Windows 17.0.It is resulted from the study that entrepreneurs have positive approaches toward human resource management contrary to our biases during the pre survey period about entrepreneurs’ perceptions. Before conducting the survey, it was expected from entrepreneurs that money is the first important motivator for their start-up firms. However, results of the survey indicate that human is more important rather than money for entrepreneurs. On the other hand, surprisingly, entrepreneurs have at least average level knowledge on human resource management and its functions
Investigation of the complications and incidences of orf disease during and after the Feast of the Sacrifice period
Background/objectives: Orf is not an endemic disease. However, it causes epidemics after the Feast of the Sacrifice in Muslim countries because it is transmitted from animals. This study investigates orf disease incidences during and after the Feast of the Sacrifice period in Izmir. The study seeks to detect the association between various occupations and orf, as well as the rate of disease-related complications.
Methods: This retrospective study included 168 orf patients and 352 control patients selected from among 68,723 patients who applied to our dermatology polyclinic between 2006 and 2012. The patients were grouped according to their occupation, residential area, and the time at which they acquired the disease (either before or after the Feast of the Sacrifice).
Results: Orf disease was detected most commonly in butchers (24.4%) before the Feast of the Sacrifice and in slaughterers (40.5%) after the Feast of the Sacrifice. When the sum of all groups was inspected, the group most exposed to the disease was the group that fed and slaughtered the animals (45.2%). A male preponderance (30.4%) was found in this group before the Feast of the Sacrifice, whereas a female preponderance (32.7%) was found in this group after the Feast.
Conclusion: The high rate of orf detected (168/68,723) in our research is connected with an increase of population, sacrifices, and animal husbandry regions
Factors Related to Mortality in Carbapenem Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Infections in Intensive Care Units: A Prospective Observational Study
WOS: 000582249100014Introduction: Management of carbapenem resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infections in intensive care units is challenging because of few treatment options and poor outcomes. in order to contribute to patients' survival, the factors related to mortality in these infections were evaluated in this study. Materials and Methods: in the 6-month study period, we included 60 patients with carbapenem resistant A. baumannii infections (45 ventilator associated pneumonia and 15 bacteremia) in two intensive care units of our hospital. We collected data of the patients prospectively. We noted demographic features of patients, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE II), Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA), Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS), Acute Kidney Injury (AKIN) scores, antibiotic treatments, clinical and microbiological outputs, and mortality rates during treatment and on the 30th day. Results: We observed that infections appeared at mean 11th day of the patients' stay in the intensive care unit. Carbapenem resistant A. baumannii isolates were highly resistant to antibiotics except colistin. Only 9% of the patients had proper empirical treatment. Twenty five percent of the patients were dead before having a specific antibiotic treatment. Crude mortality rate was 66.7%, and 30th day mortality was 71.7%. the patients who had colistin and tigecycline combination had higher survival rates, but it was statistically insignificant. in univariate analysis high SOFA score (p= 0.0001), high procalcitonin level (p= 0.01), septic shock (p= 0.005), renal insufficiency (p= 0.005), rheumatological disease (p= 0.03) were related to higher mortality. We detected high SOFA score on the first day of infection as the only mortality related factor in multivariate analysis (p= 0.012). the patients who had higher mortality were those with delayed (> 3 days) proper antimicrobial treatment (p= 0.03). Conclusion: in our study, the high SOFA score on the first day of infection in intensive care units was found as a risk factor for mortality. We suggest that prompt administration of the proper antibiotic treatment to the patients who have risk factors for carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii infection can contribute to survival
