Peculiar features in implementing basic research projects as part of the innovation system and effective ways of strengthening the practical focus of basic research projects in Ukraine are studied. Peculiarities of basic research projects management are highlighted in light of theoretical aspects and global experiences in building up innovation systems. It is emphasized that a serious problem in basic research projects management is choice of effective forms of their financing. Main problems related with market promotion of basic research results in Ukraine are analyzed. Recommendations on development of innovation system and basic research in Ukraine through engaging domestic researchers in the global innovation system and the European Research Area are given.Досліджено особливості реалізації фундаментальних наукових проектів в рамках інноваційної системи, а також перспективні шляхи підвищення рівня практичної спрямованості фундаментальних наукових проектів в Україні. Equilibrium at the edge and atomistic mechanisms of graphene growth

The morphology of graphene is crucial for its applications, yet an adequate theory of its growth is lacking: It is either simplified to a phenomenological-continuum level or is overly detailed in atomistic simulations, which are often intractable. Here we put forward a comprehensive picture dubbed nanoreactor, which draws from ideas of step-flow crystal growth augmented by detailed first-principles calculations. As the carbon atoms migrate fromthe feedstock to catalyst to final graphene lattice, they go through a sequence of states whose energy levels can be computed and arranged into a step-by-step map. Analysis begins with the structure and energies of arbitrary edges to yield equilibrium island shapes. Then, it elucidates how the atoms dock at the edges and how they avoid forming defects. The sequence of atomic row assembly determines the kinetic anisotropy of growth, and consequently, graphene island morphology, explaining a number of experimental facts and suggesting how the growth product can further be improved. Finally, this analysis adds a useful perspective on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes and its essential distinction from graphene

Breaking of symmetry in graphene growth on metal substrates

In graphene growth, island symmetry can become lower than the intrinsic symmetries of both graphene and the substrate. First-principles calculations and Monte Carlo modeling explain the shapes observed in our experiments and earlier studies for various metal surface symmetries. For equilibrium shape, edge energy variations ??E manifest in distorted hexagons with different ground-state edge structures. In growth or nucleation, energy variation enters exponentially as ???e??E/kBT, strongly amplifying the symmetry breaking, up to completely changing the shapes to triangular, ribbonlike, or rhombic. © 2015 American Physical Societyopen1

Convective Drying in the Multistage Shelf Dryers: Theoretical Bases and Practical Implementation

    Get PDF
The main advantages regarding the convective drying of the granular materials in the multistage dryers with sloping perforated shelves were represented. Peculiarities of the shelf dryers’ hydrodynamics were shown in the research. Various hydrodynamic weighing modes were experimentally justified, and the relevant criteria equations were obtained. The results of investigations regarding the interphase heat and mass transfer were given; criteria dependencies, which predict heat and mass transfer coefficients in the shelf dryers, were proposed. A method to assess the efficiency of the dehydration process at the separate stages of the device and in the dryer, in general, was proposed. The algorithm to define the residence time of the granular material on the perforated shelf with a description of the author’s software product for optimization calculation was shown. The shelf dryers’ engineering calculation method was presented in this work. The original constructions of devices with various ways to control the residence time of the granular material that stays in their workspace were described. The testing results of the shelf dryer to dry granular materials, such as coarse- and fine-crystalline potassium chloride, sodium pyrosulfate, and iron and nickel powders, were demonstrated
