“People Are Missing.” And What Can Performance Do?

Traveling through the spaces of political actions and performing arts of the 2010s, mostly in Western European countries, A Live Gathering: Performance and Politics in Contemporary Europe looks into a new phase of relationships between these two fields. Asking about the potential of performance to embody the experience of politicality, the book provokes the discussion about alternative modes of participation in politics when artists' and audiences' imagination becomes a vehicle to overcome political predicament on the road to democracy. &nbsp

Improved mirror ball projection for more accurate merging of multiple camera outputs and process monitoring

Using spherical mirrors in place of wide-angle cameras allows for cost-effective monitoring of manufacturing processes in hazardous environment, where a camera would normally not operate. This includes environments of high heat, vacuum and strong electromagnetic fields. Moreover, it allows the layering of multiple camera types (e.g., color image, near-infrared, long-wavelength infrared, ultraviolet) into a single wide-angle output, whilst accounting for the different camera placements and lenses used. Normally, the different camera positions introduce a parallax shift between the images, but with a spherical projection as produced by a spherical mirror, this parallax shift is reduced, depending on mirror size and distance to the monitoring target. This paper introduces a variation of the 'mirror ball projection', that accounts for distortion produced by a perspective camera at the pole of the projection. Finally, the efficacy of process monitoring via a mirror ball is evaluated

The Synchrotron Emission Mechanism in the Recently Detected Very High Energy Radiation from the Crab Pulsar

Interpretation of the recently discovered very high energy (VHE) pulsed emission from the Crab pulsar is presented. By taking into account the fact that Crab pulsar's radiation for the optical and VHE spectrum peak at the same phases, we argue that the source of this broad band emission is spatially localized. It is shown that the only mechanism providing the results of the MAGIC Cherenkov telescope, should be the synchrotron radiation. We find that in the magnetospheric electron-positron plasma, due to the cyclotron instability, the pitch angle becomes non-vanishing, which leads to the efficient synchrotron mechanism, intensifying on the light cylinder lengthscales. We also estimate the VHE radiation spectral index to be equal to -1/2.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur

On the very high energy spectrum of the Crab pulsar

In the present paper we construct a self-consistent theory, interpreting the observations of the MAGIC Cherenkov Telescope of the very high energy (VHE) pulsed emission from the Crab pulsar. In particular, on the basis of the Vlasov's kinetic equation we study the process of the quasi-linear diffusion(QLD) developed by means of the cyclotron instability. This mechanism provides simultaneous generation of low (radio) and VHE (0.01-25GeV) emission on the light cylinder scales, in one location of the pulsar magnetosphere. A different approach of the synchrotron theory is considered, giving the spectral index of VHE emission (β=2\beta=2) and the exponential cutoff energy (23 GeV) in a good agreement with the observational data.Comment: 8 pages, 0 figure

Formation Mechanisms for Spirals in Barred Galaxies

We consider a scenario of formation of the spiral structure in barred galaxies. This scenario includes the new non-resonant mechanism of elongation of spirals, due to the characteristic behaviour of the gravitational potential beyond the principal spiral arms

AE Aquarii represents a new subclass of Cataclysmic Variables

We analyze properties of the unique nova-like star AE Aquarii identified with a close binary system containing a red dwarf and a very fast rotating magnetized white dwarf. It cannot be assigned to any of the three commonly adopted sub-classes of Cataclysmic Variables: Polars, Intermediate Polars, and Accreting non-magnetized White Dwarfs. Our study has shown that the white dwarf in AE Aqr is in the ejector state and its dipole magnetic moment is μ 1.5×1034Gcm3\mu ~ 1.5 \times 10^{34} G cm^3. It switched into this state due to intensive mass exchange between the system components during a previous epoch. A high rate of disk accretion onto the white dwarf surface resulted in temporary screening of its magnetic field and spin-up of the white dwarf to its present spin period. Transition of the white dwarf to the ejector state had occurred at a final stage of the spin-up epoch as its magnetic field emerged from the accreted plasma due to diffusion. In the frame of this scenario AE Aqr represents a missing link in the chain of Polars evolution and the white dwarf resembles a recycled pulsar.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy Reports (July 2012
