    Quantum Phase Transitions and the Extended Coupled Cluster Method

    We discuss the application of an extended version of the coupled cluster method to systems exhibiting a quantum phase transition. We use the lattice O(4) non-linear sigma model in (1+1)- and (3+1)-dimensions as an example. We show how simple predictions get modified, leading to the absence of a phase transition in (1+1) dimensions, and strong indications for a phase transition in (3+1) dimensions

    Analysing singularities of a benchmark problem

    The purpose of this paper is to analyze the singularities of a well known benchmark problem ``Andrews' squeezing mechanism''. We show that for physically relevant parameter values this system admits singularities. The method is based on Gr\"obner bases computations and ideal decomposition. It is algorithmic and can thus be applied to study constraint singularities which arise in more general situations.Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures (yet small files), submitted to Multibody System Dynamic

    Tämä opinnäytetyö tehtiin Steerprop Oy:lle. Yritys valmistaa kääntyviä propulsiolaitteita muun muassa rannikko-, risteily- sekä rahtialuksiin. Lisäksi laitteita valmistetaan aluksiin jotka toimivat vaativissa arktisissa olosuhteissa. Yritys valmistaa myös joitakin tuotannossa käytettäviä laitteita. Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli tutkia mitä tuotantolaitteiden suunnittelussa tulee ottaa huomioon jotta niille voidaan myöntää CE - merkki. Tuotantotiloissa oli jo käytössä oleva laakeripesän pyörityslaite joka piti saada CE - merkinnän piiriin. Lisäksi tarkoituksena oli laatia ohjeistus koneiden rakentamiselle tulevaisuudessa. Opinnäytetyössä tutkittiin konedirektiivin sekä koneasetuksen vaatimuksia sekä standardeja joita koneen suunnittelussa tarvitaan. Lisäksi laakerinpyörityslaitteelle piti mallintaa piirustukset Solid Works - ohjelmalla, laatia koneelle käyttö- ja turvallisuusohjeet, sekä kerätä tarvittavat tiedot tekniseen rakennetiedostoon. Työn tuloksena saatiin konedirektiivin määräykset täyttävä ohjeistus, jota soveltamalla yrityksen tuotannossa voidaan tulevaisuudessa suunnitella turvallisia, CE - merkinnän määräykset täyttäviä koneita.This thesis was made for Steerprop Oy which is located at Rauma. Steerprop is a manufacturer of steerable propulsion units which are used mainly at offshore-, cruise-and cargo vessels. Company also manufactures propulsion units used in highly demanding arctic conditions. The company produces also some of the machines which are used in production. The safe use of machinery is the most important issue in preventing accidents at work. Therefore it is necessary to find out all the legal notices and demands of standards concerning machine safety. CE-marking is manufacturer’s declaration of machine safety. The use of marking is mandatory if machines are to be sold. It appeared that machines made for production purposes also have to bear the marking. CE-marking also enables free trade inside the European Union. A machine which is rotating bearing housings was already in use in company’s production facilities. The machine was studied and modified to bear the CE-marking. As a result of this thesis was an instruction manual for production which can be applied in designing of safe machines in the future

    International business networks through social media : case study of a cleantech SME

    The extensive use of digital technology, especially social media have fundamentally transformed the way we communicate, collaborate, consume, create, and share information. Social media are no longer platform used by individuals and consumers but also used by big, medium- as well as small-sized companies worldwide. Social media are nowadays a part of companies internationalization strategy because it allows companies to perform several business functions. However, there is a lack of research on understanding how SMEs can utilize social media in internationalization. Thus the objective of this research is to explore the importance of SM in SMEs' internationalization process. More specifically, the objective of the thesis is to examine how social media can be used as a network building channel or tool in SME's internationalization process. The objectives of the research will be achieved through an intensive single case study research of an international cleantech Finnish SME. The empirical research was conducted through semi-structured interviews. Altogether seven semi-structured interviews were conducted in the case company in December 2019. The interviewees consisted of managers and employees. An inductive approach was adopted in the research, and the data were analyzed based on the thematic analysis. The study reveals that social media can be used as a supportive tool for SMEs to build and maintain international business networks. Also, the research reveals that there are three different mechanisms, which show in practical how social media enable SMEs to build new international business networks and what these, in turn, bring to the SME. Based on the findings, a model was created that combines both the micro and macro levels of a company. The results of the study, as well as the model developed, will help SMEs to use social media more effectively for maintaining and forming international network relations

    Numerical solution and structural analysis of differential-algebraic equations

    In the last two decades differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) have become an important branch in numerical analysis. In this Thesis we study them from a new, geometric point of view. The DAE is interpreted as a subset of a jet bundle and its solution are induced by the Cartan distribution on the jet bundle. We also introduce a method to examine and define the structure of a general, polynomial, DAE whose locus is not necessarily a fibred manifold. Also it is shown how some singularities of multibody systems are removed by using the algebraic techniques used in this approach.reviewe
