    A possible X-ray jet from the starburst galaxy NGC6217

    Deep ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations of the nuclear starburst, UV flat spectrum spiral NGC6217 reveal a jet-like X-ray filament extending out 2.7' (18.8 kpc) to the SW of the galaxy. Radio images of NGC6217 show an extent in the same direction, giving further evidence for a one-sided X-ray jet interpretation of this feature. It's X-ray spectrum is harder than that of NGC6217 and the luminosity in the 0.5-2.0 keV band ~1.7 E39 erg\s. We compare our findings to parameters of other X-ray jets from other active galaxies. We also give positions of a total of 91 X-ray sources detected in the field to a limiting 0.5-2.0 keV flux of ~2.2E-15 erg\cm**2\s and propose optical and radio identifications.     Acne resolution rates: Results of a single-blind, randomized, controlled, parallel phase III trial with EE/CMA (Belara (R)) and EE/LNG (Microgynon (R))

    Background and Objective: Acne in women can often be successfully treated by the intake of oral contraceptives containing gestagens with anti-androgenic properties. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the monophasic oral contraceptive ethinylestradiol/chlormadinone acetate (EE/CMA; Belara (R)) for the treatment of mild to moderate papulopustular acne of the face and acne-related disorders in comparison to EE/levonorgestrel (LNG; Microgynon (R)). Methods: 199 female acne patients were enrolled in a single-blind, randomized, multicentre phase III study and divided into two groups who received either EE/CMA or EE/LNG. The primary end point was fulfilled if the number of papules/pustules per half of the face present on admission had decreased by at least 50% in the 12th medication cycle. Results: 59.4% of the women under EE/CMA and 45.9% under EE/LNG were responders. The relative frequency of women with complete resolution was 16.5% under EE/CMA and 4.3% under EE/LNG at cycle 12. Conclusion: EE/CMA is an efficient treatment for women with mild and moderate papulopustular acne of the face and related disorders, reflecting the well-known anti-androgenic properties of the progestogen CMA.     Evidence for Intrinsic Redshifts in Normal Spiral Galaxies

    The Tully-Fisher Relationship (TFR) is utilized to identify anomalous redshifts in normal spiral galaxies. Three redshift anomalies are identified in this analysis: (1) Several clusters of galaxies are examined in which late type spirals have significant excess redshifts relative to early type spirals in the same clusters, (2) Galaxies of morphology similar to ScI galaxies are found to have a systematic excess redshift relative to the redshifts expected if the Hubble Constant is 72 km s-1 Mpc-1, (3) individual galaxies, pairs, and groups are identified which strongly deviate from the predictions of a smooth Hubble flow. These redshift deviations are significantly larger than can be explained by peculiar motions and TFR errors. It is concluded that the redshift anomalies identified in this analysis are consistent with previous claims for large non-cosmological (intrinsic) redshifts.Comment: Accepted for publication at Astrophysics&Space Science. 36 pages including 8 tables and 7 figure

    The brightest apparent magnitude examples of ultra luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRG's) are studied here in X-ray, optical, infrared and radio wavelengths. It is is found that they have associated material reaching out to apparent diameters of the order of a degree on the sky.     EMULATOR vs REAL PHONE: Android Malware Detection Using Machine Learning

Sophisticated Android malware employ detection avoidance techniques in order to hide their malicious activities from analysis tools. These include a wide range of anti-emulator techniques, where the malware programs attempt to hide their malicious activities by detecting the emulator. For this reason, countermeasures against anti-emulation are becoming increasingly important in Android malware detection. Analysis and detection based on real devices can alleviate the problems of anti-emulation as well as improve the effectiveness of dynamic analysis. Hence, in this paper we present an investigation of machine learning based malware detection using dynamic analysis on real devices. A tool is implemented to automatically extract dynamic features from Android phones and through several experiments, a comparative analysis of emulator based vs. device based detection by means of several machine learning algorithms is undertaken. Our study shows that several features could be extracted more effectively from the on-device dynamic analysis compared to emulators. It was also found that approximately 24% more apps were successfully analysed on the phone. Furthermore, all of the studied machine learning based detection performed better when applied to features extracted from the on-device dynamic analysis

    Massive Coronae of Galaxies

    There is reason to suspect that about half of the baryons are in pressure-supported plasma in the halos of normal galaxies, drawn in by gravity along with about half of the dark matter. To be consistent with the observations this baryonic component, the corona, would have to be hotter than the kinetic temperature of the dark matter in the halo so as to produce acceptable central electron densities. We ascribe this hotter plasma temperature to the addition of entropy prior to and during assembly of the system, in an analogy to cluster formation. The plasma cooling time would be longer than the gravitational collapse time but, in the inner parts, shorter than the Hubble time, making the corona thermally unstable to the formation of a cloudy structure that may be in line with what is indicated by quasar absorption line systems. The corona of an isolated spiral galaxy would be a source of soft X-ray and recombination radiation, adding to the more commonly discussed effects of stars and supernovae. In this picture the mass in the corona is much larger than the mass in condensed baryons in a spiral galaxy. The corona thus would be a substantial reservoir of diffuse baryons that are settling and adding to the mass in interstellar matter and stars, so that star formation in isolated spirals will continue well beyond the present epoch.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    Intrinsic Redshifts and the Tully-Fisher Distance Scale

    The Tully-Fisher relationship (TFR) has been shown to have a relatively small observed scatter of ~ +/-0.35 mag implying an intrinsic scatter < +/-0.30 mag. However, when the TFR is calibrated from distances derived from the Hubble relation for field galaxies scatter is consistently found to be +/-0.64 to +/-0.84 mag. This significantly larger scatter requires that intrinsic TFR scatter is actually much larger than +/-0.30 mag, that field galaxies have an intrinsic TFR scatter much larger than cluster spirals, or that field galaxies have a velocity dispersion relative to the Hubble flow in excess of 1000 km s-1. Each of these potential explanations faces difficulties contradicted by available data and the results of previous studies. An alternative explanation is that the measured redshifts of galaxies are composed of a cosmological redshift component predicted from the value of the Hubble Constant and a superimposed intrinsic redshift component previously identified in other studies. This intrinsic redshift component may exceed 5000 km s-1 in individual galaxies.
