Bayesian estimation of the infrequency of purchase model with an application to food demand in the UK
A Bayesian method of estimating multivariate sample selection models is introduced and applied to the estimation of a demand system for food in the UK to account for censoring arising from infrequency of purchase. We show how it is possible to impose identifying restrictions on the sample selection equations and that, unlike a maximum likelihood framework, the imposition of adding up at both latent and observed levels is straightforward. We find that higher income households consume proportionately more meat and more fresh fruit and vegetables. Regional differences in fruit and vegetable consumption are marked with the highest levels of consumption in London and the South East. The presence of children in a household reduces levels of vegetable consumption. Households employed in the professional or managerial sectors have higher levels of fruit and vegetable consumption. Age has an influence on the consumption of fats and sugars, with consumption declining amongst older households and on the types of fruit and vegetables consumed with younger households preferring more ready meals and prepared fruit and vegetables.Bayesian estimation; Demand system; Infrequency of purchase;
Effects of aircraft noise on human activities
The effects of aircrft noise on human activities was investigated by developing a battery of tasks (1) representative of a range of human activities and (2) sensitive to the disruptive effects of noise. The noise used were recordings of jet aircraft and helicopter sounds at three lvels of loudness--60, 70, and 80 dB(A). Experiment 1 investigated 12 different cognitive tasks, along with two intelligibility tasks included to validate that the noises were being effective. Interference with intelligibility was essentially the same as found in the research literature, but only inconsistent effects were found on either accuracy or latency of performance on the cognitive tasks. When the tasks were grouped into four categories (Intelligibility, Matching, Verbal, and Arithmetic), reliable differences in rated annoyingness of the noises were related to the task category and to the type of noise (jet or helicopter)

Evaporation and Step Edge Diffusion in MBE
Using kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations of a Solid-on-Solid model we
investigate the influence of step edge diffusion (SED) and evaporation on
Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). Based on these investigations we propose two
strategies to optimize MBE-growth. The strategies are applicable in different
growth regimes: during layer-by-layer growth one can reduce the desorption rate
using a pulsed flux. In three-dimensional (3D) growth the SED can help to grow
large, smooth structures. For this purpose the flux has to be reduced with time

Corrosion and Electrochemical Properties of Laser-Shock-Peening-Treated Stainless Steel AISI 304L in VVER Primary Water Environment
Laser Shock Peening (LSP) is a surface treatment technique for metallic materials. It induces plastic deformation at the surface of up to around 1 mm in depth. This process introduces residual stresses that lead to strain hardening, and potentially improvements in fatigue, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and general corrosion behaviour in many, but not all, corrosive media. In this paper, two specimens made of AISI 304L stainless steel, one LSP-treated and one un-treated, were tested at 280 °C and 8 MPa in VVER (or PWR) primary circuit water chemistry using in situ Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). This experiment serves to qualify the influence of LSP on the changes in corrosion behaviour in high-temperature, high-density water. The residual stress (RS) measurement of the surface showed a compression RS. Before LSP treatment, RS at the surface was 52.2 MPa in the rolling direction 0°RD and 10.42 MPa in the transverse rolling direction 90°RD. After the treatment, surface RS was −175.27 MPa and −183.51 MPa for Scan and TScan directions, respectively. The effect of compressive RS at the surface was studied and showed an increase in corrosion rate. The analysis of oxide layer by SEM revealed differences between LSP-treated and untreated AISI 304L specimens and their connection to corrosion rates
p-Type doping of II-VI heterostructures from surface states: application to ferromagnetic CdMnTe quantum wells
We present a study of p-type doping of CdTe and CdMnTe quantum
wells from surface states. We show that this method is as efficient as usual
modulation doping with nitrogen acceptors, and leads to hole densities
exceeding cm. Surface doping was successfully applied
to obtain carrier-induced ferromagnetism in a CdMnTe quantum well.
The observed temperature dependence of photoluminescence spectra, and the
critical temperature, correspond well to those previously reported for
ferromagnetic quantum wells doped with nitrogen.Comment: 4 figure
