    HEA Flexible Learning Practice Guide

    This Guide is designed to help practitioners develop flexible learning processes across a range of domains and levels and to aid subsequent implementation. It starts by providing practitioners with some contested definitions of flexible learning and argues a case for a particular approach; it articulates a set of overarching principles for flexible learning processes; covers the parameters of flexible learning and outlines what falls outside of scope; it considers the implications for staff and institutions when operationalising flexible learning processes and possible impact on students; finally, it provides brief synopses of others' innovative approaches in this domain alongside further resources. The immediate intention is to build confidence in those seeking to use more inclusive, collaborative and flexible pedagogical processes in enhancing student success. A longer-term ambition is to develop an emerging network of practitioners as part of our Flexible Learning Community of Practice who can use this Guide as a conduit for sharing further ideas and to use as a springboard for taking flexible learning to a new level. The Guide should be read in conjunction with the illustrative case studies and with the HEA Framework for Flexible Learning in higher education (2015) against which many of its key principles are aligned

    Deep Woodchip Litter: Hygiene, Feeding, and Behavioral Enhancement in Eight Primate Species

    Sixty-seven animals from eight primate species were used to assess improved husbandry techniques. The presence of woodchips as a direct-contact litter decreased inactivity and fighting and increased time spent on the ground. Placing food in the deep litter led to further behavioral improvement. Frozen foods improved distribution and reduced fighting in most situations, especially when buried in the litter. With time, the litter became increasingly inhibitory to bacteria. The results suggest that inexpensive ways of increasing environmental complexity are effective in improving housing for primates

    We propose a new method for measuring longitudinal amplitudes for electroproduction of pseudoscalar mesons that exploits a symmetry relation for polarization observables in parallel kinematics.     Transposon Disruption of the Complex I NADH Oxidoreductase Gene (snoD) in Staphylococcus aureus Is Associated with Reduced Susceptibility to the Microbicidal Activity of Thrombin-Induced Platelet Microbicidal Protein 1

    The cationic molecule thrombin-induced platelet microbicidal protein 1 (tPMP-1) exerts potent activity against Staphylococcus aureus. We previously reported that a Tn551 S. aureus transposon mutant, ISP479R, and two bacteriophage back-transductants, TxA and TxB, exhibit reduced in vitro susceptibility to tPMP-1 (tPMP-1(r)) compared to the parental strain, ISP479C (V. Dhawan, M. R. Yeaman, A. L. Cheung, E. Kim, P. M. Sullam, and A. S. Bayer, Infect. Immun. 65:3293-3299, 1997). In the current study, the genetic basis for tPMP-1(r) in these mutants was identified. GenBank homology searches using sequence corresponding to chromosomal DNA flanking Tn551 mutant strains showed that the fourth gene in the staphylococcal mnh operon (mnhABCDEFG) was insertionally inactivated. This operon was previously reported to encode a Na(+)/H(+) antiporter involved in pH tolerance and halotolerance. However, the capacity of ISP479R to grow at pH extremes and in high NaCl concentrations (1 to 3 M), coupled with its loss of transmembrane potential (DeltaPsi) during postexponential growth, suggested that the mnh gene products are not functioning as a secondary (i.e., passive) Na(+)/H(+) antiporter. Moreover, we identified protein homologies between mnhD and the nuo genes of Escherichia coli that encode components of a complex I NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase. Consistent with these data, exposures of tPMP-1-susceptible (tPMP-1(s)) parental strains (both clinical and laboratory derived) with either CCCP (a proton ionophore which collapses the proton motive force) or pieracidin A (a specific complex I enzyme inhibitor) significantly reduced tPMP-induced killing to levels seen in the tPMP-1(r) mutants. To reflect the energization of the gene products encoded by the mnh operon, we have renamed the locus sno (S. aureus nuo orthologue). These novel findings indicate that disruption of a complex I enzyme locus can confer reduced in vitro susceptibility to tPMP-1 in S. aureus

    We calculate the ultra-relativistic Bose-Einstein condensation temperature of a complex scalar field with weak lambda Phi^4 interaction. We show that at high temperature and finite density we can use dimensional reduction to produce an effective three-dimensional theory which then requires non-perturbative analysis.     Liquid Hydrogen Target Experience at SLAC

    Liquid hydrogen targets have played a vital role in the physics program at SLAC for the past 40 years. These targets have ranged from small "beer can" targets to the 1.5 m long E158 target that was capable of absorbing up to 800 W without any significant density changes. Successful use of these targets has required the development of thin-wall designs, liquid hydrogen pumps, remote positioning and alignment systems, safety systems, control and data acquisition systems, cryogenic cooling circuits and heat exchangers. Detailed operating procedures have been created to ensure safety and operational reliability.This paper surveys the evolution of liquid hydrogen targets at SLAC and discusses advances in several of the enabling technologies that made these targets possible

    Inclusive Scattering of Polarized Electrons on Polarized 3He Effects of Final State Interaction and the Magnetic Form Factor of the Neutron

    Effects of final state interaction on asymmetries in inclusive scattering of polarized electrons on polarized 3He are investigated using consistent 3He bound state wave function and 3N continuum scattering states. Significant effects are found, which influence the extraction of the magnetic neutron form factor from A_T'. The enhancement found experimentally for A_TL' near the 3N breakup threshold, which could not be explained in calculations carried through in plane wave impulse approximation up to now, occurs now also in theory if the full final state interaction is included.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figure
