    First Results of the Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay with the NEMO 3 Detector

    The NEMO 3 detector, which has been operating in the Frejus underground laboratory since February 2003, is devoted to the search for neutrinoless double beta decay (bb0nu). Half-lives of the two neutrino double beta decays (bb2nu) have been measured for 100Mo and 82Se. After 389 effective days of data collection from February 2003 until September 2004 (Phase I), no evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay was found from ~7kg of 100Mo and ~1 kg of 82Se. The corresponding lower limits for the half-lives are 4.6 x 10^23 years for 100Mo and 1.0 x10^23 years for 82Se (90% C.L.). Depending on the nuclear matrix elements calculation, limits for the effective Majorana neutrino mass are < 1.7-4.9 eV for 82Se

    Using Coal Bed Methane Produced Saltwater From Well Sites for Native and Non-Native Grass Stand Establishment

    New Mexico plays a critical role in America’s oil and natural gas industry with the first San Juan Basin oil well drilled near Aztec in 1921. The San Juan Fruitland formation is first in coal bed-methane production and reserves with approximately 597 produced saltwater disposal wells. Approximately 12,500 new wells, including natural gas, C02, oil, and saltwater disposal units will be drilled during the next 20 years in the San Juan Basin. Around 2.5 acres of land, not including roads, are disturbed during drilling of each well. With an average annual rainfall of approximately 8.0 inches, establishment of vegetation is very critical. Research plots were established in the San Juan Basin in 2004 using coal bed-methane produced saltwater (CBMPS) to enhance native and non-native grass establishment. Soils samples were taken before and after produced water applications to determine electrical conductivity, pH, and sodium adsorption ratios. CBMPS samples were taken at each application and analyzed for total dissolved salts, electrical conductivity, pH, and sodium adsorption ratios. Sixteen grasses, including native and non-native, were evaluated for stand establishment approximately one year after CBMPS application. Approximately 5.2 inches of CBMPS averaging 8.2, 3838 meq/L, 69, and 16.8 in pH, total dissolved salts, electrical conductivity and sodium adsorption ratio respectively, were applied to Conoco/Phillips 242A. Arriba Western, Hy- Crest Crested, Critana Thickspike, Anatone Bluebunch, San Luis Slender Wheatgrasses, and Bottlebrush Squirreltail resulted in good to excellent in stand establishment one year after CBMPS application

    Using a relativistic nuclear optical potential consisting of a Lorentz scalar, VsV_{s}, and the time-like component of a four-vector potential, V0V_{0}, we calculate elastic scattering differential cross sections and polarizations for p+4p+^{4}He at intermediate energies for which experimental data are available. We also calculate the differential cross sections and analyzing powers for p+6,8p+^{6,8}He at intermediate energies and compare with the few available experimental data.Comment: 09 pages, 04 figure

    Breaking Barriers to Successful Implementation of Day Case Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.

    Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a common procedure performed in both emergency and elective settings. Our aim was to analyse the trends in laparoscopic surgery in Ireland in the public and private healthcare systems. In particular we studied the trend in day case laparoscopic cholecystectomy. National HIPE data for the years 2010-2012 was obtained. Similar datasets were obtained from the three main health insurers. 19,214 laparoscopic cholecystectomies were carried out in Ireland over the 3-year period. More procedures were performed in the public system than the private system from 2010-2012. There was a steady increase in surgeries performed in the public sector, while the private sector remained static. Although the ALOS was significantly higher in the public sector, there was an increase in the rate of day case procedures from 416 (13%) to 762 (21.9%). The day case rates in private hospitals increased only slightly from 29 (5.1%) in 2010 to 40 (5.9%) in 2012. Day case laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been shown to be a safe procedure, however significant barriers remain in place to the implementation of successful day case units nationwide

    Emergency medicine in Oman: current status and future challenges

    The Sultanate of Oman has a relatively young national health care system that could demonstrate its high performance at an international level. Emergency medicine as a specialty has developed rapidly in the country over the last decade. This has involved the parallel development of local emergency residency training, prehospital emergency care, and emergency nursing programs. This article reviews the progress of emergency care practice in this country from a general primary care system toward becoming an established specialty in hospital, prehospital, and private emergency care settings. It also describes aspects of undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuous emergency medicine education in the country. Further, a glimpse into academic emergency medicine and emergency nursing is provided. Since it describes a developing specialty, the article also attempts to address briefly major future challenges and their importance to the future development of the specialty in Oman

    Factors associated with age at autism diagnosis in a community sample of Australian adults

    Autism diagnosis in adulthood has become increasingly common due to a range of factors including changes in awareness, diagnostic criteria, and professional practices. Past research identified a range of demographic and autism-related factors associated with autism diagnosis age in children. However, it is unclear whether these apply to autistic adults. This study aimed to examine predictors of autism diagnosis age in adults while controlling for current age and autistic traits. We used a cross-sectional sample of 657 adults aged 15–80 from three self and carer-report studies: the Australian Longitudinal Study of Autism in Adulthood (ALSAA), Study of Australian School-Leavers with Autism (SASLA) and Pathways, Predictors and Impact of Receiving an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis in Adulthood (Pathways). Using hierarchical multiplicative heteroscedastic regression, we found that older current age and higher self-reported autistic traits predicted older diagnosis age, and that female gender, lack of intellectual disability, language other than English, family history of autism, lifetime depression, and no obsessive–compulsive disorder predicted older diagnosis age beyond current age and autistic traits. The paradoxical relationship between high autistic traits and older diagnosis age requires further investigation. Based on these findings, we recommended strategies to improve autism recognition in women and people from non-English-speaking backgrounds. Future studies could extend the findings by examining the effects of childhood and adulthood socioeconomic status on adult diagnosis age. Lay Summary: We studied the relationship between age at autism diagnosis and other characteristics in adults. We found that both older current age and higher autistic traits, female gender, language other than English, family history of autism, and history of depression were related to older age at diagnosis, while intellectual disability and history of obsessive–compulsive disorder were related to younger age at diagnosis. Our findings suggest more work is needed to help recognize autism in women and people from non-English-speaking backgrounds

    Behavior of a Model Dynamical System with Applications to Weak Turbulence

    We experimentally explore solutions to a model Hamiltonian dynamical system derived in Colliander et al., 2012, to study frequency cascades in the cubic defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on the torus. Our results include a statistical analysis of the evolution of data with localized amplitudes and random phases, which supports the conjecture that energy cascades are a generic phenomenon. We also identify stationary solutions, periodic solutions in an associated problem and find experimental evidence of hyperbolic behavior. Many of our results rely upon reframing the dynamical system using a hydrodynamic formulation.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figure
