    Talking to people with learning disabilities and their families about the experience of systemic therapy.

    Systemic family therapy is an approach to psychological therapy that is increasingly being offered to adults with learning disabilities and their families. To date there has been no published evaluation of the degree to which this is an approach that is effective in alleviating distress for this client group. The present study aimed to explore the experiences of adults with learning disabilities and their family members, who had attended systemic family therapy together. It also aimed to investigate whether it was an experience that had been helpful and in what ways, if any it impacted on their lives. Ten families and six adults with learning disabilities were interviewed about their experiences of attending systemic family therapy. The transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Participants had mixed views about the degree to which systemic therapy had been helpful to them. Some family members saw it as having a positive impact on their views about and ways of approaching particular issues. However, for other families systemic therapy had not offered the kind of help they had expected and the experience was seen as relatively insignificant, vague or confusing. For the participants with learning disabilities there was a general sense that the opportunity to talk about difficulties was seen as valuable. However, the degree to which some of these participants felt they had a voice was limited. A combination of feeling pressure to 'know' what to say, and the presence of other family members in the meetings made it difficult for them to have their say. These findings suggest that although systemic family therapy can be helpful, particular aspects of the process may need to be adapted to ensure it is an approach that is accessible for this client group and their families

    On the calibration of rectangular atomic force microscope cantilevers modified by particle attachment and lamination

    A simple but effective method for estimating the spring constant of commercially available atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilevers is presented, based on estimating the cantilever thickness from knowledge of its length, width, resonant frequency and the presence or absence of an added mass, such as a colloid probe at the cantilever apex, or a thin film of deposited material. The spring constant of the cantilever can then be estimated using standard equations for cantilever beams. The results are compared to spring constant calibration measurements performed using reference cantilevers. Additionally, the effect of the deposition of Cr and Ti thin films onto rectangular Si cantilevers is investigated

    Plastic ingestion in adult and fledgling Manx Shearwaters Puffinus puffinus on Skomer Island, Wales

    Plastic debris is ubiquitous in the marine environment, and seabirds are among the most impacted marine vertebrates. Plastic ingestion was investigated in an internationally-important breeding population of Manx Shearwaters Puffinus puffinus on Skomer Island, Wales in 2018–19. Opportunistic necropsies were carried out on a total of 34 birds to collect contents of the gastrointestinal tract: 13 adults in April – July 2018 and 12 fledglings during September 2019, and a further nine opportunistic necropsies carried out from adults in July – September 2018. The presence, quantity, size and colour of plastic in the gastrointestinal tract was investigated. Plastic was found in 71% of stomach contents (68% of adults, 75% of fledglings). Adults were found to have larger plastic pieces in their gastrointestinal tract than fledglings, and lighter birds had larger pieces of plastic in their tracts than heavier birds. This study shows that Manx Shearwaters on Skomer Island are vulnerable to plastic ingestion, and that adults are likely to pass plastic to their chicks

    Cellular and molecular mechanisms of IMMunE dysfunction and Recovery from SEpsis-related critical illness in adults: An observational cohort study (IMMERSE) protocol paper

    Sepsis is a common illness. Immune responses are considered major drivers of sepsis illness and outcomes. However, there are no proven immunomodulator therapies in sepsis. We hypothesised that in-depth characterisation of sepsis-specific immune trajectory may inform immunomodulation in sepsis-related critical illness. We describe the protocol of the IMMERSE study to address this hypothesis. We include critically ill sepsis patients without documented immune comorbidity and age-sex matched cardiac surgical patients as controls. We plan to perform an in-depth biological characterisation of innate and adaptive immune systems, platelet function, humoral components and transcriptional determinants of the immune system responses in sepsis. This will be done at pre-specified time points during their critical illness to generate an illness trajectory. The sample size for each biological assessment is different and is described in detail. In summary, the overall aim of the IMMERSE study is to increase the granularity of longitudinal immunology model of sepsis to inform future immunomodulation trials

    China suffered minimal fallout from the global financial crisis due to its burgeoning economy and ‘socialism with Chinese characteristics’ political strategy. However, despite this, its industries face enormous human resource management (HRM) challenges associated with the country's rapid economic growth. Principal amongst these HRM challenges is the need to attract and retain crucial talent. It is likely that if Chinese industry is unsuccessful in these endeavours, the future economic growth of China may be stalled, resulting in more serious long-term outcomes. This paper explores these challenges together with some possible solutions and future research directions

    Sonographic assessment of renal length in children: A reappraisal

    Ultrasonography (US) has largely replaced the intravenous urogram as the first modality for the evaluation of the kidneys in children suspected of having urinary tract abnormalities. Because many renal disorders are associated with changes in the sizes of the kidneys, normative standards for assessing renal size have been developed. These standards rely upon comparison of the renal lengths or calculated volumes or both, with various assessments of overall body size, including body surface area, weight, height, and chronological age. We discuss some of the limitations of US in assessing renal size in children.
