Modified capitonage in partial cystectomy performed for liver hydatid disease: Report of 2 cases

BACKGROUND: Several techniques have been described in liver hydatid disease surgery, with most well known partial cystectomy, capitonage and introflexion. METHODS: We present a technical modification on open partial cystectomy for liver hydatid disease. We performed this operation in 2 patients with liver echinococcosis. The cyst is being unroofed and evacuated from the daughter cysts. The identified bile vessels ligated. The remnants of the anterior wall (capsule of the cyst) are anchored with sutures in the posterior wall in a manner that the cavity of the cyst disappears. RESULTS: In both patients the disease eradicated. No postoperative complications were observed including bile leaking and/or abscess formation. CONCLUSIONS: Our technique helps in the fast, and effective mobilization of the patient, as well as in the minimization of postoperative bile leaking

Investigating the Experiences of Male Student English Teachers in a Traditional Non-Gender Profession

    No full text
The research for this paper aims to investigate the viewpoints and career plans of male student teachers of English entering a gender non-traditional field in a university in Turkey. The study has found that the driving motivator for the participants was the strong determination and commitment to the profession and the anticipation of moral satisfaction as well as the desire to be effective role models for their students. Despite the fact that they soon realized the high level societal stigma attributed to the teaching profession, they decided not to get out of the chosen career path. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The study examines whether there is a changing trend in reactions of families and society towards male teacher candidates, as economic tendencies have changed drastically in Turkey. Nineteen male and three female student teachers majoring in English language teaching were interviewed for this study. It has been found that most families had neutral views. Some did not initially want their children to choose teaching, but they were later content about the decision, as they realized that graduating from teaching departments offered more employment opportunities. The reactions of the peers also change depending on their own field. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.WoSScopu

Metaphorical Conceptualizations Of Arab Learners Of Turkish

    No full text
Metaphor analysis is considered to be a fruitful line of inquiry deserving more attention and application in foreign language instruction. However, the research examining linguistic metaphors used by foreign language learners, especially those learning less common languages, is almost non existent. The purpose of this study was to investigate the metaphorical concepts used by Arab students of Turkish (N=42) by tapping into their personal language learning experiences. By systematically attempting to organize abstract thoughts into concrete ones, 40 metaphors were produced in response to the cue "Learning Turkish is like." Results were organized into four conceptual categories. (c) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.WoSScopu

Foreign language learners’ beliefs about language learning: a study on Turkish university students

AbstractThe present study addresses the differences and similarities among English, German, and French language groups’ beliefs about language learning. The participant students (n=343) completed Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory (BALLI) and a demographic information questionnaire. The results of a cross-tabulation of thirty-four items showed that although French language learners had more positive expectations in language learning, all three groups held certain beliefs that would be detrimental to their long-term language learning. To alleviate the negative outcomes of these beliefs on language learners, theLanguage teachers could implement and discuss positive instructional practices and realistic expectations in the classroom

Intraductal growth-type mucin-producing peripheral cholangiocarcinoma associated with biliary papillomatosis

A 64-year-old woman with upper abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting was admitted. The magnetic resonance imaging revealed marked dilation and "crowding" of the segment 4 bile ducts with an area suspicious for a stone or tumor. Ultrasonography-guided percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography revealed multiple filling defects in the segment 4 bile ducts, the left and common hepatic ducts. A left hepatectomy and cholecystectomy was performed. Dilated bile ducts containing mucinous material and a mass in the cystically dilated bile ducts of segment 4 were detected in the gross examination. It showed continuity within the surrounding dilated bile ducts. The dilated bile ducts of the segments 2 and 3 contained mucinous material without any apparent mass formation. Microscopically, the bile ducts were lined by biliary epithelium displaying simple and complex papillary structures with moderate to severe degree of dysplastic changes. The mass was composed of complex papillary structures filling the bile duct with a few foci of invasion. The papillary structures were composed of mucin-producing columnar cells as well as cells with oncocytic appearence. Patchy cytokeratin 7, cytokeratin 19, hepatocyte paraffin 1, MUC2, and CDX2 immunopositivities were observed. Biliary papillomatosis, mucin-producing intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, and intraductal papillary-type peripheral cholangiocarcinoma are in the same disease spectrum of papillary biliary neoplasm and termed as intraductal papillary neoplasm of the liver. Mucinous hypersecretion and signs of mucobilia are considered specific and should raise the suspicion of lesions in this spectrum. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved
