The Trust Receipt—Its Possible Legal Status in Washington

Within a period of comparatively recent date there has crept into commercial usage an instrument known as the trust receipt. Because of the extensive use now being made of the trust receipt in Washington, it is well to become acquainted with some of its legal aspects. In British law the rights of the lending bank under the trust receipt have been steadfastly upheld on the ground that the trust receipt is a necessary instrument of commerce. This view has been quite generally followed in the American courts, with the difference, however, that the courts deem it a part of their judicial duty to decide whether these instruments (which have nothing to do with technical trusts) are chattel mortgages, contracts of conditional sale, or something different from either. Trust receipts have been held to be conditional sales in those jurisdictions where, at the time of the decisions, conditional sale contracts did not have to be recorded. On the other hand, at least one writer contends that the creditor (the banker) is a mortgagee, and that the trust receipt arrangement constitues, in legal effect, a chattel mortgage. At any rate the earlier view was in favor of the banker, one court going so far as to classify the trust receipt as a bailment in order to avoid the harsh rule making conditional sales fraudulent

Gyrification in relation to cortical thickness in the congenitally blind

Greater cortical gyrification (GY) is linked with enhanced cognitive abilities and is also negatively related to cortical thickness (CT). Individuals who are congenitally blind (CB) exhibits remarkable functional brain plasticity which enables them to perform certain non-visual and cognitive tasks with supranormal abilities. For instance, extensive training using touch and audition enables CB people to develop impressive skills and there is evidence linking these skills to cross-modal activations of primary visual areas. There is a cascade of anatomical, morphometric and functional-connectivity changes in non-visual structures, volumetric reductions in several components of the visual system, and CT is also increased in CB. No study to date has explored GY changes in this population, and no study has explored how variations in CT are related to GY changes in CB. T1-weighted 3D structural magnetic resonance imaging scans were acquired to examine the effects of congenital visual deprivation in cortical structures in a healthy sample of 11 CB individuals (6 male) and 16 age-matched sighted controls (SC) (10 male). In this report, we show for the first time an increase in GY in several brain areas of CB individuals compared to SC, and a negative relationship between GY and CT in the CB brain in several different cortical areas. We discuss the implications of our findings and the contributions of developmental factors and synaptogenesis to the relationship between CT and GY in CB individuals compared to SC. F

The Proposed Michigan Judicature Act. The Michigan Legislature, at its last session, passed an act (No. 286, Public Acts of 1913) providing for the appointment of a Commission to revise and consolidate the laws of the State relating to procedure. The Governor appointed Alva M. Cummins, J. Clyde Watt, and Mark W. Stevens as members of this commission, and, the result of their labors has just appeared in the form of a proposed bill regulating the entire subject of procedure in all the courts of the State. The bill is a long one, embracing 565 printed pages, but it is much less voluminous than the combined mass of provisions dealing with procedure now scattered almost at random through our statutes

Diffusion mechanisms of localised knots along a polymer

We consider the diffusive motion of a localized knot along a linear polymer chain. In particular, we derive the mean diffusion time of the knot before it escapes from the chain once it gets close to one of the chain ends. Self-reptation of the entire chain between either end and the knot position, during which the knot is provided with free volume, leads to an L^3 scaling of diffusion time; for sufficiently long chains, subdiffusion will enhance this time even more. Conversely, we propose local ``breathing'', i.e., local conformational rearrangement inside the knot region (KR) and its immediate neighbourhood, as additional mechanism. The contribution of KR-breathing to the diffusion time scales only quadratically, L^2, speeding up the knot escape considerably and guaranteeing finite knot mobility even for very long chains.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. The object of study is the electric drive of a submersible pump. In accordance with the task, the necessary equipment was selected for the operation of the oil production technological process, as well as the scalar law of electric drive control. The parameters of the selected motor, the equivalent circuit parameters, and the static characteristics of the inverter-motor system were calculated. The following is a simulation of the engine in MATLAB - the calculation of transient processes of speed, current and torque. The simulation results showed that the investigated electric drive fully meets the requirements for electric pumps
