    Antioxidants Properties and Effect of Processing Methods on Bioactive Compounds of Legumes

    Extensive research has proven that fruits and vegetables contribute significantly to the body supply of bioactive compounds due to their antioxidant activity to protect organisms against harmful effects of oxygen radicals. A special case is the legumes that are also rich source of proteins, dietary fiber, micronutrients, and bioactive phytochemicals. Many legume species are still an irreplaceable source of dietary proteins for humans, especially in the mainly vegetarian diets of developing countries. Incorporation of leguminous seeds into the human diet can offer protective effects against chronic diseases because they contain a number of bioactive substances including phenolics that can increase protein digestibility and mineral bioavailability. However, technological processing and seed germination can impact the levels of natural endogenous antioxidants (e.g., phenolics, tocopherols; vitamin C) in leguminous seeds. Therefore, this chapter is a review about reports of antioxidant properties and their relationship with their total phenolic content of the most commonly consumed legumes. Researches about changes in the content of natural antioxidants during technological processing are included as well as some clinical reports concerning to the health benefits offered by legumes of higher consumption

    Marfan´s syndrome is a multisystemic, autosomal dominant congenital abnormality of variable penetrance that affects the integrity of connective tissue. In the cardiovascular system, the dysfunction of the physiology of the aortic root and the myocardial fibrosis originates non-ischemic cardiomyopathy independent of valve lesions. Few data have been reported on the prevalence of arrhythmias and its impact on heart function. We present a 21-year-old man with Marfan’s syndrome and heart failure with frequent supraventricular arrhythmias and aortic root dilation. After ablation in the posteroseptal area of the mitral ring and Tirone David Surgery, there was clinical improvement, the left ventricular ejection fraction increased dramatically from 33% to 46%, the left ventricular end-diastolic volume decreased from 90 ml/m2 to 77 ml/m2 and the NT-proBNP decrease from 1100 pg/mL at 180 pg/mL.Marfan´s syndrome is a multisystemic, autosomal dominant congenital abnormality of variable penetrance that affects the integrity of connective tissue.     Early in-flight detection of SO<sub>2</sub> via Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy: a feasible aviation safety measure to prevent potential encounters with volcanic plumes

    Volcanic ash constitutes a risk to aviation, mainly due to its ability to cause jet engines to fail. Other risks include the possibility of abrasion of windshields and potentially serious damage to avionic systems. These hazards have been widely recognized since the early 1980s, when volcanic ash provoked several incidents of engine failure in commercial aircraft. In addition to volcanic ash, volcanic gases also pose a threat. Prolonged and/or cumulative exposure to sulphur dioxide (SO<sub>2</sub>) or sulphuric acid (H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>) aerosols potentially affects e.g. windows, air frame and may cause permanent damage to engines. SO<sub>2</sub> receives most attention among the gas species commonly found in volcanic plumes because its presence above the lower troposphere is a clear proxy for a volcanic cloud and indicates that fine ash could also be present. <br><br> Up to now, remote sensing of SO<sub>2</sub> via Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) in the ultraviolet spectral region has been used to measure volcanic clouds from ground based, airborne and satellite platforms. Attention has been given to volcanic emission strength, chemistry inside volcanic clouds and measurement procedures were adapted accordingly. Here we present a set of experimental and model results, highlighting the feasibility of DOAS to be used as an airborne early detection system of SO<sub>2</sub> in two spatial dimensions. In order to prove our new concept, simultaneous airborne and ground-based measurements of the plume of Popocatépetl volcano, Mexico, were conducted in April 2010. The plume extended at an altitude around 5250 m above sea level and was approached and traversed at the same altitude with several forward looking DOAS systems aboard an airplane. These DOAS systems measured SO<sub>2</sub> in the flight direction and at &pm;40 mrad (2.3&deg;) angles relative to it in both, horizontal and vertical directions. The approaches started at up to 25 km distance to the plume and SO<sub>2</sub> was measured at all times well above the detection limit. In combination with radiative transfer studies, this study indicates that an extended volcanic cloud with a concentration of 10<sup>12</sup> molecules cm<sup>&minus;3</sup> at typical flight levels of 10 km can be detected unambiguously at distances of up to 80 km away. This range provides enough time (approx. 5 min) for pilots to take action to avoid entering a volcanic cloud in the flight path, suggesting that this technique can be used as an effective aid to prevent dangerous aircraft encounters with potentially ash rich volcanic clouds

    Transparencia corporativa en empresas generadoras de energía eléctrica en el Perú

    La presente tesis tiene como objetivo principal abordar la problemática de la ausencia de parámetros de medición estandarizados de transparencia corporativa en el medio local peruano, en particular, en el sector de generación de energía eléctrica. En tal sentido, esta investigación recopila y analiza diferentes estudios e instrumentos a nivel nacional e internacional relacionados con transparencia corporativa para proponer un instrumento de estimación de transparencia corporativa, adaptado y validado para el contexto específico del mencionado sector desde la perspectiva de sus principales partes interesadas, el mismo que encuentra su origen en cuatro instrumentos básicos seleccionados luego de un análisis de la revisión de la literatura vigente a nivel internacional. Estos instrumentos básicos han sido elegidos luego de valorizar una serie de criterios para priorizarlos y seleccionar los más relevantes de acuerdo a las características del sector y realidad nacional. Esta herramienta permitió desarrollar una investigación cualitativa descriptiva que utilizó fuentes secundarias como es el canal web consultando la página oficial de cada empresa y de manera complementaria los sitios web oficiales de los entes reguladores para recolectar información; con el fin de identificar y analizar los niveles de transparencia corporativa que alcanzaron nueve empresas de la industria generadora de energía eléctrica local que cotizan en la Bolsa de Valores de Lima en el año 2017. Los resultados obtenidos de la aplicación del instrumento muestran una dispersión significativa, para mayor apreciación de los mismos, se han presentado tablas por dimensiones y por las empresas que conforman la muestra. Finalmente y en base a todo lo desarrollado, se plantean conclusiones y recomendaciones acordes con dichos resultados.The main objective of this thesis is to address the problem of the absence of standardized measurement parameters of corporate transparency in the Peruvian local environment, particularly in the electric power generation sector. In this regard, this research compiles and analyzes different studies and instruments at the national and international level related to corporate transparency to propose an instrument for estimating corporate transparency, adapted and validated for the specific context of said sector from the perspective of its main stakeholders, the same one that finds its origin in four basic instruments selected after an analysis of the revision of the current international literature. These basic instruments have been chosen after valuing a series of criteria to prioritize them and select the most relevant according to the characteristics of the sector and national reality. This tool allowed to develop a descriptive qualitative research that used secondary sources such as the web channel by consulting the official website of each company and in a complementary way the official websites of the regulatory bodies to collect information; in order to identify and analyze the levels of corporate transparency achieved by nine companies in the local electricity generation industry that are listed on the Lima Stock Exchange in 2017. The results obtained from the application of the instrument show a significant dispersion, for greater appreciation of the same, tables have been presented by dimensions and by the companies that make up the sample. Finally, based on the developed content, conclusions and recommendations are presented in accordance with those results.Tesi

En el sistema cardiovascular, también se ha descrito la disfunción de la fisiología de la raíz aórtica y la fibrosis miocárdica que origina una miocardiopatía no isquémica independiente de las lesiones valvulares. Se han comunicado pocos datos sobre la prevalencia de arritmias y su repercusión en la función cardiaca. Presentamos el caso de un varón de 21 años con síndrome de Marfan e insuficiencia cardiaca con frecuentes arritmias supraventriculares y dilatación de la raíz aórtica. Después de la ablación en la zona posteroseptal del anillo mitral y la cirugía de Tirone David, hubo mejoría clínica, la fracción de eyección ventricular izquierda aumentó espectacularmente del 33 al 46%, el volumen telediastólico ventricular izquierdo disminuyó de 90 a 77 mL/m* y el NT-proBNP disminuyó de 1100 a 180 pg/mL

    The buccal fat pad due to its size, vascular richness and versatility is a reliable flap. The technique which uses this anatomic element as flap is better tolerated by the patient, easy development and with fewer complications compared to other techniques. For the advantages of this technique is important to highlight its usefulness in the closure of oroantral comunications. This paper describes the technique used in a case of recurrent oroantral fistula which was recidivant to other treatments, treated in The National Institute of Child´s Health.La bola adiposa de Bichat debido a su volumen, riqueza vascular y versatilidad es un colgajo confiable. La técnica, que utiliza a este elemento anatómico como colgajo, es mejor tolerada por el paciente, de fácil desarrollo y con menos complicaciones comparada con otras técnicas. Por las ventajas que presenta esta técnica es importante resaltar su utilidad en el cierre de las comunicaciones bucosinusales.     Biología reproductiva del pez vela Istiophorus platypterus en la Bahía de Acapulco, México: Reproductive biology of sailfish

    Background. The sailfish Istiophorus platypterus is a viviparous billfish species, it is caught by trolling in the sports fishery in Mexico. However, to date, there has been no reproductive biology studies of sailfish in Acapulco Bay, although the reproductive aspects of any species represent essential information for the design of management plans. Goals. Estimate the spawning frequency and batch fecundity to quantify reproductive characteristics of sailfish in waters off Acapulco, Bay. Methods. During the period 2008–2019, a total of 581 fish were sampled. Macroscopy analysis and quantitative histology was used to describe reproductive characteristics of the sailfish gonads. Results. 55.8% of the organisms analyzed were males, the remaining 44.2% were females, the sex ratio (1.26 M: 1 H) was different from the expected theoretical ratio (X2 = 7.53). The ovaries of 155 females were classified into five ovarian development phases based on histological analysis of the most advanced group of oocytes. Sailfish are multiple spawners with asynchronous oocyte development. Batch fecundity for 14 females with the presence of hydrated oocytes but without postovulatory follicles ranged 0.330 to 2.092 × 106 eggs with an average of 1.07 × 106 eggs. Gonadosomatic indices (GSI) indicated that sailfish have a reproductive period with peaks in August and October (mean monthly GSI= 4.3% and 5.4%). Conclusions. Population sailfish in Acapulco Bay is composed of males and females in similar proportions, with a gonadal development by groups that can be described in five development phases, a reproductive maximum during the warm months of the year and a relatively high fecundity.Antecedentes. El pez vela Istiophorus platypterus (Shaw, 1792) es una especie vivípara (Isthiophoridae) objeto de la flota deportiva de pesca en México. Aún y cuando los aspectos reproductivos de cualquier especie representan información esencial para el diseño de planes de manejo, a la fecha no se ha realizado un examen macroscópico e histológico de las características reproductivas del pez vela en la Bahía de Acapulco, Guerrero, México. Objetivo. Estimar la frecuencia de desove y la fecundidad, con la finalidad de cuantificar las características reproductivas del pez vela en aguas de la Bahía de Acapulco. Métodos. Durante el período 2008-2009, se muestrearon un total de 581 peces. Se utilizó análisis macroscópico e histología cuantitativa para describir las características reproductivas de las gónadas del pez vela. Resultados. El 55.8 % de los organismos analizados fueron machos, el 44.2 % restante fueron hembras, la proporción de sexos (1.26 M:1H) fue diferente de la proporción teórica esperada (X2 = 7.53). El análisis histológico de las gónadas de las hembras permitió identificar cinco fases de desarrollo ovárico. El desarrollo gonádico fue sincrónico por grupos, por tanto, la especie puede ser calificada como un desovador parcial múltiple. La fecundidad estimada varió entre los 0.330-2.092 × 106 ovocitos, con un promedio de 1.07 × 106 ovocitos. El índice gonadosomático (IGS) indicó que el pez vela tiene un período de reproducción con picos en agosto y octubre (IGS mensual promedio = 4.3 % y 5.4 %, respectivamente). Conclusiones. La población de pez vela en la Bahía de Acapulco está compuesta de machos y hembras en proporciones similares, con un desarrollo gonádico por grupos que puede ser descrito en cinco fases de desarrollo, un máximo reproductivo durante los meses cálidos del año y una fecundidad relativamente alta
