This dissertation examines the subject of political and social power in the plays and prose of John Arden and selected works co-authored by Arden and his wife, Margaretta D\u27Arcy. Particular focus is given to the institution of Christianity and how it may either be used as a tool for the maintenance of established authority or as a vehicle for rebellion. Arden\u27s collected essays, along with a personal interview conducted in August of 1990, provide the starting point for a discussion of four specific works, pieces in which Arden most closely explores the political involvement of Christianity. These four works, The Business of Good Government (1963 by Arden and D\u27Arcy), The Island of the Mighty (1973 by Arden and D\u27Arcy), Whose is the Kingdom? (1973 by Arden and D\u27Arcy), and The Books of Bale (1988 by Arden), serve as the bases of this study\u27s individual chapters and are examined chronologically to reveal how Arden\u27s theory of history and social power has developed over the course of his literary career. John Arden has used Christian communities and their myths to explain a three-sided power struggle which he believes recurs throughout the history of Western society. Arden identifies different forces vying for power: established authorities, rebellious anti-authoritarian forces, and the victimized, indigenous underclasses. This historical model first appears in Serjeant Musgrave\u27s Dance (1960), develops throughout Arden\u27s partnership with Margaretta D\u27Arcy, and finally receives its fullest and most detailed expression in the historical novel, The Books of Bale. Throughout his career, Arden has attempted to balance his urge to criticize and censure the social process with his genuine faith in mankind\u27s redemptive and creative potential--a paradox that has led many critics to find his work difficult to categorize. In sum, Arden\u27s artistic development is marked by a nagging social conscience, one that severely indicts the institution of Western civilization. Nonetheless, Arden\u27s stridency is ultimately checked by a deep-rooted optimism in the perseverance and indomitable nature of the common man

John Arden is one of the most popular dramatists who found a new place for verse in the theatre and his dramatic nature as covering a wide prospect of themes ranging from political violence, pacifism, repression and anarchy. Pacifism is most relevant theme is the John Arden has broadened his mural by search deep into the contemporary socio-political issues of this era and given voice to them without any hesitation. John Arden is a notable writer among the outstanding dramatists who were held responsible for the revolution in the mid 1950s. The dramatists of this period became popular because of offering many new insights through their dramatic pieces. In the light of these meanings, Arden’s plays are examined. Arden is found to be rather uncertain about what he is depicting on the stage, because he presents the conflicting ideas of a social or political problem rather impartially. Arden’s basic themes in his drama are based on the social issues related to man’s position in society as well as the existence of serious problems that are strongly fatal and lethal in different kinds of societies which are strongly fatal or lethal. John Arden dramatizes the attempts of individuals to deal with the problems of social condemnation. However John Arden felt that such an approach is rewarded not without the danger for the playwright because of the necessary political divisions with the contemporary audience. How can the playwright dramatize these issues of man’s conflict with his society in an action that will not isolate his audience? Arden does this by means of common man, changing roles of a character who directly addresses the audience by means of historical ballad form. His function was to draw the audience into the play, while qualities of character are intended to represent that is common to all. On a whole Arden provides a frame work regarding England’s corruption, colonialism as part in the procedure of politics

Twenty years after the Viking Mission, Mars is again being scrutinized in the light of a flood of information from spacecraft missions to Mars, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the SNC meteorites. This review provides an overview of the current understanding of Mars, especially in light of the data being returned from the Mars Global Surveyor Mission. Mars does not now have a global magnetic field, but the presence of crustal anomalies indicates that a global field existed early in Martian history. The topography, geodetic figure, and gravitational field are known to high precision. The northern hemisphere is lower and has a thinner and stronger crust than the southern hemisphere. The global weather and the thermal structure of the atmosphere have been monitored for more than a year. Surface-atmosphere interaction has been investigated by observations of surface features, polar caps, atmospheric dust, and condensate clouds. The surface has been imaged at very high resolution and spectral measures have been obtained to quantify surface characteristics and geologic processes. Many questions remain unanswered, especially about the earliest period of Mars' history
