Community resilience assessment integrating network interdependencies

    Get PDF
The concept of Disaster Resilience has received considerable attention in recent years and it is increasingly used as an approach for measuring response of communities to natural disasters. Recently a framework named PEOPLES has been developed by MCEER to measure performance of communities to natural disasters. The method includes seven dimensions that include both technical and socio-economic aspects. All resilience dimensions and their respective indices to measure community performances are obviously interdependent. As first step, the physical dimension has been implemented in software and indices have been proposed to measure performance of buildings and lifelines. This paper tries to focus on developing methodologies to consider interdependencies between buildings (e.g. hospitals, strategic buildings, etc) and lifelines (road networks, etc.). An approach considering network interdependencies have been developed which is based on the time series analysis of the restoration curves of the different infrastructures. The case study of 2011 Tohoku Earthquake has been presented to illustrate the implementations issue

Clinical Features and Differential Diagnoses in Laryngeal Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of salivary glands. However, it is a rare entity in larynx. Laryngeal cases are frequently misdiagnosed with other malignancies and they are under-reported. So, recognizing the clinical and histological features of this tumor is essential. Laryngeal mucoepidermoid carcinoma can arise in supraglottis, glottis and subglottis. Generally, it presents as a submucosal mass; therefore, progressive symptoms without any identifiable lesion in laryngoscopy must be well considered. The prognosis is somehow dependent on the histological features. In high-grade tumors, recurrence is more common and radical surgery with radiotherapy is recommended. In this paper, we provide a thorough literature review on mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the larynx. The most important distinguishing features of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and its two major differential diagnoses (squamous cell carcinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma) are clearly stated and pitfalls in true diagnosis of this tumor are discussed

The MICADO first light imager for ELT: its astrometric performance

    Get PDF
We report on our ongoing efforts to ensure that the MICADO NIR imager reaches differential absolute (often abbreviated: relative) astrometric performance limited by the SNR of typical observations. The exceptional 39m diameter collecting area in combination with a powerful multi-conjugate adaptive optics system (called MAORY) brings the nominal centroiding error, which scales as FWHM/SNR, down to a few 10 uas. Here we show that an exceptional effort is needed to provide a system which delivers adequate and calibrateable astrometric performance over the full field of view (up to 53 arcsec diameter).Comment: 5 pages, submitted to SPIE 2018 Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentatio
