Polyethylene naphthalate film as a wavelength shifter in liquid argon detectors
Liquid argon-based scintillation detectors are important for dark matter
searches and neutrino physics. Argon scintillation light is in the vacuum
ultraviolet region, making it hard to be detected by conventional means.
Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), an optically transparent thermoplastic
polyester commercially available as large area sheets or rolls, is proposed as
an alternative wavelength shifter to the commonly-used tetraphenyl butadiene
(TPB). By combining the existing literature data and spectrometer measurements
relative to TPB, we conclude that the fluorescence yield and timing of both
materials may be very close. The evidence collected suggests that PEN is a
suitable replacement for TPB in liquid argon neutrino detectors, and is also a
promising candidate for dark matter detectors. Advantages of PEN are discussed
in the context of scaling-up existing technologies to the next generation of
very large ktonne-scale detectors. Its simplicity has a potential to facilitate
such scale-ups, revolutionizing the field.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

Omnivory by planktivores stabilizes plankton dynamics, but may either promote or reduce algal biomass
Classical models of phytoplankton–zooplankton interaction show that with nutrient enrichment such systems may abruptly shift from limit cycles to stable phytoplankton domination due to zooplankton predation by planktivorous fish. Such models assume that planktivorous fish eat only zooplankton, but there are various species of filter-feeding fish that may also feed on phytoplankton. Here, we extend these classical models to systematically explore the effects of omnivory by planktivorous fish. Our analysis indicates that if fish forage on phytoplankton in addition to zooplankton, the alternative attractors predicted by the classical models disappear for all realistic parameter settings, even if omnivorous fish have a strong preference for zooplankton. Our model also shows that the level of fish biomass above which zooplankton collapse should be higher when fish are omnivorous than when fish are zooplanktivorous. We also used the model to explore the potential effects of the now increasingly common practice of stocking lakes with filter-feeding fish to control cyanobacteria. Because omnivorous filter-feeding fish forage on phytoplankton as well as on the main grazers of phytoplankton, the net effect of such fish on the phytoplankton biomass is not obvious. Our model suggests that there may be a unimodal relationship between the biomass of omnivorous filter-feeding fish and the biomass of phytoplankton. This implies that to manage for reductions in phytoplankton biomass, heavy stocking or strong reduction of such fish is bes
Universal R-C crossover in current-voltage characteristics for unshunted array of overdamped Nb-AlO_x-Nb Josephson junctions
We report on some unusual behavior of the measured current-voltage
characteristics (CVC) in artificially prepared two-dimensional unshunted array
of overdamped Nb-AlO_x-Nb Josephson junctions. The obtained nonlinear CVC are
found to exhibit a pronounced (and practically temperature independent)
crossover at some current I_{cr}=\left(\frac{1}{2\beta_C}-1\right)I_C from a
resistance R dominated state with V_R=R\sqrt{I^2-I_C^2} below I_{cr} to a
capacitance C dominated state with V_C=\sqrt{\frac{\hbar}{4eC}} \sqrt{I-I_C}
above I_{cr}. The origin of the observed behavior is discussed within a
single-plaquette approximation assuming the conventional RSJ model with a
finite capacitance and the Ambegaokar-Baratoff relation for the critical
current of the single junction
