Lasuna rasayana in management of parkinsonism-a case report

    Get PDF
Parkinsonism is a disease with insidious onset and slow progression. It is one of the most common extrapyramidal disorders seen in clinical practice. Parkinsonism can be correlated with Kampavata in Ayurveda based on similar symptomatology. This case presents an intriguing scenario of Parkinsonism, with the patient having undergone allopathic medication for the last two years. Additionally, Ayurvedic treatments and Rasayana therapy have been introduced as complementary measures. The patient underwent Avaranagna and Vatavyadi chikitsa, incorporating practices such as Agni deepanam, Amapachanam, Snehana svedanam, Shodanam, and Rasayana chikitsa for a holistic therapeutic approach. Patients assessment was conducted using modified Hoehn and Yahr scale, Schwab and England ADL scale, Parkinson’s disease composite scale and PDQ 39 scale on the 0th day and 42th day.  Quality of life scale PDQ-39 SI score was improved from 53.25 pre-treatment to 35.79 post treatment. Following 42 days of treatment incorporated with ayurvedic treatment procedures, coupled with Rasayana therapy, demonstrated a notable amelioration of symptoms, a reduction in disability, and an enhancement in the overall quality of life

Social organization in experimentally assembled colonies of Ropalidia marginata: comparison of introduced and natal wasps

    Get PDF
In the primitively eusocial wasp, Ropalidia marginata worker behaviour cannot be explained satisfactorily by the haplodiploidy hypothesis due to the existence of polyandry, serial polygyny and movement of wasps between nests, which reduce intra-colony genetic relatedness to levels lower than the value expected between a solitary foundress and her offspring. We introduced wasps eclosing from one set of colonies into other colonies separated by a distance of 10 km or more, to examine the possibility of kin recognition and task specialization under conditions of low intracolony relatedness. Introduced wasps were readily accepted into unrelated foster colonies, where they performed most of the behaviours and tasks shown by the natal wasps. We found no evidence of kin recognition or task specialization among natal and introduced wasps. Introduced wasps sometimes became replacement queens in spite of the presence of natal wasps. Taken together with previous observations, these results lend support to the idea that factors other than genetic relatedness must play a prominent role in the evolution of worker behaviour in Ropalidia marginata

Astaxanthin from shrimp efficiently modulates oxidative stress and allied cell death progression in MCF-7 cells treated synergistically with β-carotene and lutein from greens

    Get PDF
This study investigated the synergistic efficacy of keto-carotenoid astaxanthin (AST, from shrimp) plus hydrocarbon (β-carotene, BC) and hydroxyl (lutein, L) carotenoids (from greens) on molecular events in MCF-7 cells. MCF-7 cells were treated with either of carotenoid (20 μM, AST or BC or L) separately or the mixture of them (an equimolar concentration of carotenoids mixture, CM) or saponified carotenoid extract from shrimp (SSCE) for 48 h and analyzed cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis. The IC50 and combination-index values of AST co-treatment with a lower concentration of BC and L (5 μM) exhibited enhanced cytotoxicity and oxidative stress as compared with individual carotenoids or SSCE. Further, higher cellular uptake/accumulation of AST along with BC and L found to synergistically induce apoptosis through modulation of cyclin D1, p53, Bax and Bcl-2 expressions by arresting cell cycle at G0/G1 phase. Further, CM or SSCE treatments are unlikely to affect proliferation of normal breast epithelial cells (MCF-10A). The results of selective killing of MCF-7 cells demonstrated a greater insight on the synergistic effect of shrimp AST plus BC and L. It is concluded that consumption of shrimp along with green leafy vegetables helps in combating cancer chemoprevention. © 2017 Elsevier Lt

    QoS Analysis For 5G Networks

    Get PDF
Fifth generation (5G) is the wireless network technologies, which is designed to provide efficient quality of service in mind. The performance seen by the users of the network will primarily depend on QoS elements. Thus, by managing QoS – Bit rate, Throughput, Transmission delay, packet loss, and Jitter parameters can improve to manage the network resource efficiently. The 5G system is a combination of many different modulation techniques; this is done to ensure improvement in performance and further to result in greater-efficiency in the output. The author has made an attempt to analyze different modulation techniques with the coding scheme and compare the QoS performances between them. The performances have been analyzed for two schemes QPSK and QAM using Viterbi coding scheme. Thus for both the modulation technique with Viterbi coding scheme excellent performances were recorded, thereby providing an optimum solution to maintain QoS

Seed abortion in Pongamia pinnata (Fabaceae)

    Get PDF
In Pongamia pinnata only one of the two ovules develops into a seed in most of the pods. Since pollen was not found to be limiting and reduced fertilization could not completely explain the observed frequency of seed abortion, it implied an effect of postfertilization factors. Aqueous extracts of developing seeds and maternal tissue (placenta) did not influence abortion in vitro, suggesting that abortion may not be mediated by a chemical. Experimental uptake of 14C sucrose in vitro indicated that both the stigmatic and the peduncular seed have similar inherent capacities of drawing resources, but the peduncular seed is deprived of resources in the presence of the stigmatic seed. This deprivation of the peduncular seed could be offset by supplying an excess of hormones leading to the subsequent formation of two seeds in a pod. The prevalence of single-seeded pods in P. pinnata seems therefore to be a result of competition between the two seeds for maternal resources. The evolutionary significance of single-seeded pods in P. pinnata is discussed with respect to possible dispersal advantage enjoyed by such pods

Performance Analysis of Maximal Ratio Combining with FBMC for 5G

    Get PDF
One of the main objectives of upcoming 5G technology is to support huge data capacity with high data rate. To support high data traffic, designs of new multicarrier techniques are essential. FBMC is considered to be one such promising technique for 5G.The major concern with the wireless time varying channels when transmitting a signal is its nature and behavior for that period of duration. When mobile systems are used for transmission and reception across these time varying channels, the signals are subjected to ISI and multipath fading. These are the key setbacks which worsen the quality of overall received signal. The author proposes a solution to this problem by the use of receiver diversity techniques with Filter Bank Multi Carrier technique

Background: In the current study patient compliance to the standard triple therapy were assessed. The objective behind this research was to assess the patient medication adherence to the standard triple therapy in Helicobacter pylori infection. Methods: A prospective study was carried out for a period of 1 year and samples were taken from the gastroenterology department. Patient who was RUT (rapid urease test) positive by endoscopy were considered as H. pylori infected and they were prescribed with standard triple therapy. This regimen involves amoxicillin 1000 mg and clarithromycin 500 mg and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) twice a day for 14 days. Adherence to this triple therapy was assessed during the study. Medication adherence assessed using Morisky, Green and Levine (MGL) adherence scale. MGL adherence questionnaire was given to patients during first week and second week of therapy. The patients will be counselled regarding the drug administration, drug related problems and the infection. They were also provided with written instructions in leaflets. 88 patients were analyzed. Results: In this study, 84 patients had a good adherence 95.5%; but other 4.5% didn't fully comply with the physician's order. After the first week of standard triple therapy, adherence was increased to a mean score from 2.193±0.1301 to 3.5227±0.0704 in the second week. The medication adherence score significantly increased along with patient counselling. Conclusions: Medication adherence was improved in the 14 days course along with patient education helped to comply with the standard triple therapy

Evaluation of the Beliefs of Parents in Iran about How to Care for Children During Dental Visits

    Get PDF
Parents play an important role in their children’s dental care and in their behavior during dental visits. Separating children from their parents during dental visits has been a challenging subject of debate for many years. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate parents’ attitudes about being present during their children’s visits to the dentist. The subjects for this cross-sectional study included 340 Iranian parents of five-10-year-old children who had been referred to dental clinics in Kerman, Iran. For this study, the parents of these children completed self-administered questionnaires. Results showed that 218 parents (64.1%) agreed with leaving the practice room during their child’s treatment, while 122 (35.9%) did not agree. The main reason expressed by 41.3% of the parents for leaving the practicing room was that the dentist would be better able to control the child if they were alone. Another reason, cited by 16.5% of the parents, was not wanting to see their child suffering, and 42.2% said they believed that their child would be better treated if they were not present. Most parents who were in agreement with leaving the practice room while their child was receiving dental care felt this would lead to a better treatment outcome

Cyclopia with shoulder dystocia leading to an obstetric catastrophe: a case report

    Get PDF
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Cyclopia is a rare fetal malformation characterized by a single palpebral fissure and a proboscis associated with severe brain malformations. Approximately 1.05 in 100,000 births including stillbirths are identified as cyclopean. The prevalence is about one in 11,000 to 20,000 in live births and one in 250 during embryogenesis.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 30-year-old Indian woman of Asian origin, sixth gravida, was referred to the labor room of our hospital. There were no ultrasound examinations performed during this pregnancy as our patient had not received regular antenatal care. We found out that the head of her baby was already outside the vulva but the remaining parts of the baby were not yet delivered. Further examination was carried out and a diagnosis of shoulder dystocia with intrauterine fetal demise was made. A stillborn baby boy of 3.5 kg was delivered using McRoberts' maneuver. The baby was suspected of having features of cyclopia and this was later confirmed by autopsy and anatomic correlation. The mother had a cervical tear which extended into the lower segment of her uterus, thus leading to the rupture of her uterus. There was a massive broad ligament hematoma on the left side of her uterus. A total abdominal hysterectomy was carried out.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Prenatal diagnosis by ultrasound examination might help in detecting cyclopia and preventing complications associated with this condition. However, in developing countries where women do not receive regular antenatal care and do not undergo prenatal diagnosis, such cases will go undetected. In our case report, the occurrence of shoulder dystocia could be coincidental, as no risk factors were previously noted.</p
