Enhancing the Communicative Competence of Filipino Immigrants in America

    Get PDF
This field project focuses on enhancing the communicative competence of Filipino immigrants in America through developing a workshop program. The Filipino immigrant community in America is diverse and they struggle to overcome language barriers and adapt to their new environment. This project aims to solve these struggles by providing valuable skills and resources for successful communication. The workshop program is a four-unit modular material that covers areas relevant to speaking and communication, such as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, writing, speaking, and cultural competence. By enhancing their communicative competence, Filipino immigrants can engage in meaningful conversations, develop public speaking skills, and create new opportunities personally and professionally. The need for this project is driven by the researcher\u27s personal experiences, which include witnessing firsthand the struggles faced by immigrants in America. The project draws on literature and research on language acquisition, cultural competence, and communication to design an effective workshop program that meets the needs of Filipino immigrants. This project recommends further development, including immersions and real-life situations activities to facilitate a more interactive and engaging learning experience. Utilizing the expertise and experiences of other Filipino immigrants and experts can also contribute to the workshop\u27s effectiveness. The program has the potential to significantly improve Filipino immigrants\u27 lives and contribute to America\u27s cultural and linguistic diversity

Filling the Gap: Phonological Awareness Activities for a Montessori Kindergarten

Phonological Awareness in Kindergarten 2 Abstract This action research was conducted to determine if small group explicit phonological awareness (PA) instruction using materials from Early Reading Mastery (Klein, 2015) and Words Their Way (Bear et al., 2006) would increase students’ ability to segment phonemes (i.e., break words into sounds) and build three letter consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words. The research was completed in a full-day public suburban Montessori kindergarten. Data was collected using phonological awareness tests, a teacher adapted spelling test, tally sheet, and researcher’s log. Pre-test data was used to create homogenous small groups for the four-week intervention. Explicitly worded lessons taught PA and phonic skills using traditional and supplementary Montessori materials. Post-intervention data showed an increase in the number of students able to segment CVC words. Establishing a research-based structure of PA lessons and materials has strengthened the researcher’s ability to teach students the foundational PA skills necessary to begin their reading journey. Further research to determine if this instructional practice reduces reading difficulties could be studied. Keywords: phonological awareness, Montessori, Kindergarten, explicit instruction, small homogenous group

THE THEORETICAL UNDERPINNINGS OF THE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES: A PROPOSED BLUEPRINT TOWARDS GOVERNMENT ACTION

This research paper theoretically underpins the solid waste management practices in the Pacific Area of Southern Leyte as basis for a proposed blueprint towards government action that will serve as an addendum of the existing programs in accordance with the mandate under R.A. 9003 for an enhanced and intensified initiative of the local government unit(s) to address waste problems in cooperation with other concerned stakeholders (private sectors and non-government organizations) of the society

Split-sideband spectroscopy in slowly modulated optomechanics

Optomechanical coupling between the motion of a mechanical oscillator and a cavity represents a new arena for experimental investigation of quantum effects on the mesoscopic and macroscopic scale. The motional sidebands of the output of a cavity offer ultra-sensitive probes of the dynamics. We introduce a scheme whereby these sidebands split asymmetrically and show how they may be used as experimental diagnostics and signatures of quantum noise limited dynamics. We show split-sidebands with controllable asymmetry occur by simultaneously modulating the light-mechanical coupling gg and ωM\omega_M - slowly and out of-phase. Such modulations are generic but already occur in optically trapped set-ups where the equilibrium point of the oscillator is varied cyclically. We analyse recently observed, but overlooked, experimental split-sideband asymmetries; although not yet in the quantum regime, the data suggests that split sideband structures are easily accessible to future experiments

This paper presents with the goal of determining the performance of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) in Southern Leyte. Two hundred forty who were SK officials were chosen through purposive sampling as respondents of the study and the elected officials assessed and evaluated the performance of the SK members along the legislative agenda. The researcher-made questionnaire was used in gathering the data. This research study utilized the descriptive-correlational design. As to the findings of their profile mostly were seventeen years of age; majority were high school level; more than ten trainings attended and mostly have two years experience as SK members. The performance was very good as evaluated by the community elected council. There was no relationship between the social conditions and performance of the SK members, geared towards the formulation of proposed enhancement

Geometric realizations of abstract regular polyhedra with automorphism group H3

    Get PDF
A geometric realization of an abstract polyhedron P is a mapping that sends an i-face to an open set of dimension i. This work adapts a method based on Wythoff construction to generate a full rank realization of an abstract regular polyhedron from its automorphism group Gamma. The method entails finding a real orthogonal representation of Gamma of degree 3 and applying its image to suitably chosen (not necessarily connected) open sets in space. To demonstrate the use of the method, it is applied to the abstract polyhedra whose automorphism groups are isomorphic to the non-crystallographic Coxeter group H3
