    Webometric analysis of departments of librarianship and information science: a follow-up study

    This paper reports an analysis of the websites of UK departments of library and information science. Inlink counts of these websites revealed no statistically significant correlation with the quality of the research carried out by these departments, as quantified using departmental grades in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and citations in Google Scholar to publications submitted for that Exercise. Reasons for this lack of correlation include: difficulties in disambiguating departmental websites from larger institutional structures; the relatively small amount of research-related material in departmental websites; and limitations in the ways that current Web search engines process linkages to URLs. It is concluded that departmental-level webometric analyses do not at present provide an appropriate technique for evaluating academic research quality, and, more generally, that standards are needed for the formatting of URLs if inlinks are to become firmly established as a tool for website analysis

    Absorber Foam Characterization for Predicting Overall Anechoic Chamber Performance

    A new rectangular anechoic chamber (20’L x 10’W x 9’7”H) has been established at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) through donations and financial support from industry and Cal Poly departments and programs. The chamber was designed and constructed by three graduate students as part of their thesis studies to explore and further their understanding of chamber design and antenna measurements. The chamber project has included RF absorber characterization, overall chamber performance assessment, and software development for the coordination of a positioner with a vector network analyzer. This paper presents absorber characterization as a function of incidence angle and orientation to enable an overall chamber performance analysis. Test data at low incidence angles (\u3c 30o) are compared to manufacturer performance curves at normal incidence. The mean response of the measured data indicates a correlation with manufacturer curves. Through ray tracing analysis, the ripple encountered in the test data is used to identify two effective reflection planes indicative of the foam geometry. The measured data are subsequently used to predict overall anechoic chamber performance to within 1dB for a majority of the actual scan data.     Use of teledermatology by dermatology hospitalists is effective in the diagnosis and management of inpatient disease.

    BACKGROUND:Patient outcomes are improved when dermatologists provide inpatient consults. Inpatient access to dermatologists is limited, illustrating an opportunity to utilize teledermatology. Little is known about the ability of dermatologists to accurately diagnose and manage inpatients using teledermatology, particularly utilizing non-dermatologist generated clinical data. METHODS:This prospective study assessed the ability of teledermatology to diagnose and manage 41 dermatology consults from a large urban tertiary care center utilizing internal medicine referral documentation and photos. Twenty-seven dermatology hospitalists were surveyed. Interrater agreement was assessed by the kappa statistic. RESULTS:There was substantial agreement between in-person and teledermatology assessment of the diagnosis with differential diagnosis (median kappa = 0.83), substantial agreement in laboratory work-up decisions (median kappa = 0.67), almost perfect agreement in imaging decisions (median kappa = 1.0), and moderate agreement in biopsy decisions (median kappa = 0.43). There was almost perfect agreement in treatment (median kappa = 1.0), but no agreement in follow-up planning (median kappa = 0.0). There was no association between raw photo quality and the primary plus differential diagnosis or primary diagnosis alone. LIMITATIONS:Selection bias and single-center nature. CONCLUSIONS:Teledermatology may be effective in the inpatient setting, with concordant diagnosis, evaluation, and management decisions

    Young Women With Acute Myocardial Infarction: Risk Prediction Model for 1-Year Hospital Readmission

    Background Although young women ( aged ≤ 55 years) are at higher risk than similarly aged men for hospital readmission within 1 year after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), no risk prediction models have been developed for them. The present study developed and internally validated a risk prediction model of 1-year post-AMI hospital readmission among young women that considered demographic, clinical, and gender-related variables. Methods We used data from the US Variation in Recovery: Role of Gender on Outcomes of Young AMI Patients (VIRGO) study (n = 2007 women), a prospective observational study of young patients hospitalized with AMI. Bayesian model averaging was used for model selection and bootstrapping for internal validation. Model calibration and discrimination were respectively assessed with calibration plots and area under the curve. Results Within 1-year post-AMI, 684 women (34.1%) were readmitted to the hospital at least once. The final model predictors included: any in-hospital complication, baseline perceived physical health, obstructive coronary artery disease, diabetes, history of congestive heart failure, low income ( < $30,000 US), depressive symptoms, length of hospital stay, and race (White vs Black). Of the 9 retained predictors, 3 were gender-related. The model was well calibrated and exhibited modest discrimination (area under the curve = 0.66). Conclusions Our female-specific risk model was developed and internally validated in a cohort of young female patients hospitalized with AMI and can be used to predict risk of readmission. Whereas clinical factors were the strongest predictors, the model included several gender-related variables (ie, perceived physical health, depression, income level). However, discrimination was modest, indicating that other unmeasured factors contribute to variability in hospital readmission risk among younger women

    Transcriptome analysis of Paspalum notatum and Paspalum vaginatum under water deficit condition.

    Drought is one of the abiotic stresses that most affect plant growth and productivity. Grasses of the genus Paspalum are successfully used as turf and forage in Australia, Argentina, Brazil and United States. Paspalum notatum has good forage quality, and P. vaginatum, high tolerance to salinity. In addition, their potential to tolerate drought has been described previously, making them interesting for transcriptome studies under water deficit. The objective of this work was to analyze the gene expression profiles of both species in response to drought.Genética 2019
