Lakota Social Work Education Conceptual Framework: Lakol Wicoȟan skil glús múŋ nípikte-To forever use and hold tight to our Lakota values

    Get PDF
This Banded Dissertation focuses on the Oglala Lakota College (OLC) Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program curriculum. Product 1 is a conceptual article introducing the Lakota Social Work Education Conceptual Framework. The focus will be on meeting the training needs of faculty, improve retention, persistence and completion rates for future Lakota social work scholars through integration of Lakota elders’ wisdom and teachings. This conceptual framework includes the practice of the Lakota value system in alignment with social work ethics and values. Product 2 is a secondary data analysis of student engagement indicators and degree completion among American Indian students at a Tribal College/University (TCU). Product 3 is a conceptual article that introduces the Lakota Social Work Education Framework. This conceptual model was presented at the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Annual Program Meeting to inform the audience of ways to infuse Lakota values, elder knowledge and wisdom into social work education and service delivery. This cultural-based model lends to the movement toward improving diversity, equity and inclusion in social work practice and education. The implications of the Lakota Social Work Education Conceptual Framework, and the empirical research on AI student engagement indicators related to degree completion adds to the efforts to increase research by AI researchers for AI populations. It also contributes to curriculum development for schools of social work, AI studies programs and TCUs to build toward improving enrollment and completion rates among AI students. Further implications support ongoing tribal cultural revitalization movements

Vortices, circumfluence, symmetry groups and Darboux transformations of the (2+1)-dimensional Euler equation

The Euler equation (EE) is one of the basic equations in many physical fields such as fluids, plasmas, condensed matter, astrophysics, oceanic and atmospheric dynamics. A symmetry group theorem of the (2+1)-dimensional EE is obtained via a simple direct method which is thus utilized to find \em exact analytical \rm vortex and circumfluence solutions. A weak Darboux transformation theorem of the (2+1)-dimensional EE can be obtained for \em arbitrary spectral parameter \rm from the general symmetry group theorem. \rm Possible applications of the vortex and circumfluence solutions to tropical cyclones, especially Hurricane Katrina 2005, are demonstrated.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figure

Tracking Users across the Web via TLS Session Resumption

User tracking on the Internet can come in various forms, e.g., via cookies or by fingerprinting web browsers. A technique that got less attention so far is user tracking based on TLS and specifically based on the TLS session resumption mechanism. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first that investigate the applicability of TLS session resumption for user tracking. For that, we evaluated the configuration of 48 popular browsers and one million of the most popular websites. Moreover, we present a so-called prolongation attack, which allows extending the tracking period beyond the lifetime of the session resumption mechanism. To show that under the observed browser configurations tracking via TLS session resumptions is feasible, we also looked into DNS data to understand the longest consecutive tracking period for a user by a particular website. Our results indicate that with the standard setting of the session resumption lifetime in many current browsers, the average user can be tracked for up to eight days. With a session resumption lifetime of seven days, as recommended upper limit in the draft for TLS version 1.3, 65% of all users in our dataset can be tracked permanently.Comment: 11 page

Consumer Perceptions of Apparel Fit Satisfaction and Sizing Based on 3D Body Scanning and Block Garment Assessment

    Get PDF
Sizing and fit in ready-to-wear apparel causes issues for retailers and consumers alike. Retailers must strive to better understand their consumers\u27 perceptions of themselves in order to help them purchase properly fitting clothing. If a manufacturer is able to improve their sizing system to provide a better fit for more body sizes, they may be able to help reduce returns and markdowns, as well as boost customer satisfaction and potentially increase sales. A major apparel retailer is working on improving the fit of their clothing in order to better meet the needs of their customers. A key objective of this study was to evaluate the fit of the major retailer\u27s standard block garments by assessing customer satisfaction, and to determine how accurately consumers comprehend their body size by utilizing body scanning technology. Consumer perceptions and preferences with regard to this major retailer\u27s clothing are central to the study

Antonio Gramsci’s impact on critical pedagogy

    Get PDF
This paper provides an account of Antonio Gramsci’s impact on the area of critical pedagogy. It indicates the Gramscian influence on the thinking of major exponents of the field. It foregrounds Gramsci's ideas and then indicates how they have been taken up by a selection of critical pedagogy exponents who were chosen on the strength of their identification and engagement with Gramsci's ideas, some of them even having written entire essays on Gramsci. The essay concludes with a discussion concerning an aspect of Gramsci's concerns, the question of powerful knowledge, which, in the present author's view, provides a formidable challenge to critical pedagogues.peer-reviewe

Consumers\u27 Perception of Quality for Ladies\u27 Swimwear Based on Price and Brand

    Get PDF
Consumers shop at multiple retailers for different needs, and it is understood that many choose a retailer for an experience and others will shop at another retailer for better savings. In a time where E-commerce is at an all-time high, retailers need to consider how they compare against online retailers in the apparel sector. In this study, three retailers were compared against one another since they are all swimwear competitors. As these retailers adjust to store and production shortages, it is important to understand how the quality of clothing will keep sales consistent. Consumers are likely to keep shopping at locations where they trust the quality of clothing instead of having to deal with returns and customer service desks. The purpose of this research looks at how consumers view the quality of women’s swimwear. As participants of this study examined three different swimsuits and thought about what “quality” means to them, retailers can use this study to better understand what consumers are looking for when they are shopping. Consumers not only look at branding, pricing, and construction but judge a garment on how these three factors are combined

Perceived Apparel Fit Issues of High School Adolescents: Comparison of Fit Differences between Athletes and Non-Athletes Using 3D Body Scan Technology

    Get PDF
Athletes have problems with fit of their clothing caused by body changes resulting from exercise regimens (Andreoli, et al., 2001). This begins during the high school years, when the importance of body image and body satisfaction have a greater impact (Caglar & Asci, 2010). Tselepis and de Klerk (2004) reported that adolescents use clothing not only to fit in, but to increase body satisfaction. Adolescents reported dissatisfaction with clothing fit, (de Klerk and Tselepis\u27s, 2007). Objectives of the study were to determine (1) whether high school students have the perception that they have problems finding clothing that fits; (2) if the problem is common among both athletes and non-athletes and (3) if body image and body satisfaction are related to athletes and non-athletes reporting problems with fit of clothing

Impact of Scottish vocational qualifications on residential child care : have they fulfilled the promise?

This article will present findings from a doctoral study exploring the impact of 'SVQ Care: Promoting Independence (level III)' within children's homes. The study focuses on the extent to which SVQs enhance practice and their function within a 'learning society'. A total of 30 staff were selected from seven children's homes in two different local authority social work departments in Scotland. Each member of staff was interviewed on four separate occasions over a period of 9 months. Interviews were structured using a combination of repertory grids and questions. Particular focus was given to the assessment process, the extent to which SVQs enhance practice and the learning experiences of staff. The findings suggest that there are considerable deficiencies both in terms of the SVQ format and the way in which children's homes are structured for the assessment of competence. Rather than address the history of failure within residential care, it appears that SVQs have enabled the status quo to be maintained whilst creating an 'illusion' of change within a learning society
