    Aerodynamic characteristics of a large-scale hybrid upper surface blown flap model having four engines

    Data are presented from an investigation of the aerodynamic characteristics of large-scale wind tunnel aircraft model that utilized a hybrid-upper surface blown flap to augment lift. The hybrid concept of this investigation used a portion of the turbofan exhaust air for blowing over the trailing edge flap to provide boundary layer control. The model, tested in the Ames 40- by 80-foot Wind Tunnel, had a 27.5 deg swept wing of aspect ratio 8 and 4 turbofan engines mounted on the upper surface of the wing. The lift of the model was augmented by turbofan exhaust impingement on the wind upper-surface and flap system. Results were obtained for three flap deflections, for some variation of engine nozzle configuration and for jet thrust coefficients from 0 to 3.0. Six-component longitudinal and lateral data are presented with four engine operation and with the critical engine out. In addition, a limited number of cross-plots of the data are presented. All of the tests were made with a downwash rake installed instead of a horizontal tail. Some of these downwash data are also presented

    Multistable attractors in a network of phase oscillators with three-body interaction

    Three-body interactions have been found in physics, biology, and sociology. To investigate their effect on dynamical systems, as a first step, we study numerically and theoretically a system of phase oscillators with three-body interaction. As a result, an infinite number of multistable synchronized states appear above a critical coupling strength, while a stable incoherent state always exists for any coupling strength. Owing to the infinite multistability, the degree of synchrony in asymptotic state can vary continuously within some range depending on the initial phase pattern.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Amplitude analysis of reactions pi(-)p->etapi(-)p and pi(-)p->etapi(0)n on polarized target and the exotic 1-+ meson

    Recently several experimental groups analysed data on πpηπp\pi^- p \to \eta \pi^- p and πpηπ0n\pi^- p \to \eta \pi^0 n reactions with exotic 1+1^{-+} PP-wave and found a conflicting evidence for an exotic meson I=11+(1405)I=1 1^{-+} (1405). High statistics data on these reactions are presently analysed by BNL E852 Collaboration. All these analyses are based on the crucial assumption that the production amplitudes do not depend on nucleon spin. This assumption is in sharp conflict with the results of measurements of πpππ+n\pi^- p \to \pi^- \pi^+ n, π+nπ+πp\pi^+ n \to \pi^+ \pi^- p and K+nK+πpK^+ n \to K^+ \pi^- p on polarized targets at CERN which find a strong dependence of production amplitudes on nucleon spin. To ascertain the existence of exotic meson 1+(1405)1^{-+} (1405), it is necessary to perform a model-independent amplitude analysis of reactions πpηπp\pi^- p \to \eta \pi^- p and πpηπ0n\pi^- p \to \eta\pi^0 n. We demonstrate that measurements of these reactions on transversely polarized targets enable the required model independent amplitude analysis without the assumption that production amplitudes are independent on nucleon spin. We suggest that high statistics measurements of reactions πpηπp\pi^- p \to \eta\pi^- p and πpηπ0n\pi^- p \to\eta\pi^0 n be made on polarized targets at BNL and at Protvino IHEP, and that model-independent amplitude analyses of this polarized data be performed to advance hadron spectroscopy on the level of spin dependent production amplitudes.Comment: 23 page

    Behavioral-Independent Features of Complex Heartbeat Dynamics

    We test whether the complexity of cardiac interbeat interval time series is simply a consequence of the wide range of scales characterizing human behavior, especially physical activity, by analyzing data taken from healthy adult subjects under three conditions with controls: (i) a ``constant routine'' protocol where physical activity and postural changes are kept to a minimum, (ii) sympathetic blockade, and (iii) parasympathetic blockade. We find that when fluctuations in physical activity and other behavioral modifiers are minimized, a remarkable level of complexity of heartbeat dynamics remains, while for neuroautonomic blockade the multifractal complexity decreases.Comment: 4 pages with 6 eps figures.     On the Spin content of the Nucleon

    A QCD sum rule calculation of Balistky and Ji on the spin content of the nucleon is done with a different approach to the evaluation of the bilocal contributions and to the extraction of the nucleon pole residues.
