We investigated the diagnostic significance of IL-6 for lymph node metastasis and/or hepatic metastasis from colorectal cancer in 65 patients and evaluated the contributions of 8 factors (IL-6, HGF, IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, TGF-beta1, ELAM-1, ICAM-1, VCAM-1) toward Dukes.s classification of 53 patients. We also examined IL-6 expression in tumor tissue. From the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, an optimal cutoff value of 5.8 pg/ml was determined to classify lymph node and/or hepatic metastasis, and that of 6.3 pg/ml was determined to classify hepatic metastasis. These values indicated sensitivities of 55.0% and 71.4%, and specifi cities of 100% and 88.6%, respectively. IL-6, HGF, and ELAM-1 were very useful for distinguishing among Dukes.s A/B group, C group, and D group. In all cases with high IL-6 values (more than 25.0 pg/ml), immunohistochemical staining was positive for IL-6 in the cytoplasm of cancer cells. IL-6 is strongly suspected to be involved in lymph node and/or hepatic metastasis by promoting it through HGF, and serum IL-6 value (pg/ml) would be useful diagnostically to estimate whether or not there is a high risk of lymph node and/or hepatic metastasis

Dominance of a single topological sector in gauge theory on non-commutative geometry

We demonstrate a striking effect of non-commutative (NC) geometry on topological properties of gauge theory by Monte Carlo simulations. We study 2d U(1) NC gauge theory for various boundary conditions using a new finite-matrix formulation proposed recently. We find that a single topological sector dictated by the boundary condition dominates in the continuum limit. This is in sharp contrast to the results in commutative space-time based on lattice gauge theory, where all topological sectors appear with certain weights in the continuum limit. We discuss possible implications of this effect in the context of string theory compactifications and in field theory contexts.Comment: 16 pages, 27 figures, typos correcte

Polar surface engineering in ultra-thin MgO(111)/Ag(111) -- possibility of metal-insulator transition and magnetism

A recent report [Kiguchi {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 68}, 115402 (2003)] that the (111) surface of 5 MgO layers grown epitaxially on Ag(111) becomes metallic to reduce the electric dipole moment raises a question of what will happen when we have fewer MgO layers. Here we have revealed, first experimentally with electron energy-loss spectroscopy, that MgO(111) remains metallic even when one-layer thick, and theoretically with the density functional theory that the metallization should depend on the nature of the substrate. We further show, with a spin-density functional calculation, that a ferromagnetic instability may be expected for thicker films.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

Metal-Induced Gap States at Well Defined Alkali-Halide/Metal Interfaces

In order to search for states specific to insulator/metal interfaces, we have studied epitaxially grown interfaces with element-selective near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). An extra peak is observed below the bulk edge onset for LiCl films on Cu and Ag substrates. The nature of chemical bonds as probed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy remains unchanged, so we regard this as evidence for metal-induced gap states(MIGS) formed by the proximity to a metal, rather than local bonds at the interface. The dependence on the film thickness shows that the MIGS are as thin as one monolayer. An ab initio electronic structure calculation supports the existence of the MIGS that are strongly localized at the interface.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. Let

We had an opportunity to treat a rare case of foreign body in the corpus cavernosum in a patient with cleft glans penis. The foreign body was a 13 cm wire, which was inserted by the patient himself for masturbation, and was removed surgically. To our knowledge, such a case has never been reported in the literature

Identifying Potential Problems and Risks in GQM+Strategies Models Using Metamodel and Design Principles

Although GQM+Strategies®1 assures that business goals and strategies are aligned throughout an organization and at each organizational unit based on the rationales to achieve the overall business goals, whether the GQM+Strategies grid is created correctly cannot be determined because the current definition of GQM+Strategies allows multiple perspectives when aligning goals with strategies. Here we define modeling rules for GQM+Strategies with a metamodel specified with a UML class diagram. Additionally, we create design principles that consist of relationship constraints between GQM+Strategies elements, which configure GQM+Strategies grids. We demonstrate that the GQM+Strategies grids can be automatically determined with the help of design principles described in OCL. In fact, an experiment is implemented using these approaches in order to show that this method helps identify and improve potential problems and risks. The results confirm that our approaches help create a consistent GQM+Strategies grid

ABSTRACTBackgroundHydrofluoroalkane-134a (HFA) has been shown to be a safe replacement for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as a pharmaceutical propellant, with the advantage that it has no ozone-depleting potential. This is the first report of the pharmacokinetics of beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) delivered from a pressurized solution formulation using an HFA propellant system (HFA-BDP) in Japanese children with bronchial asthma.MethodsPlasma concentrations of beclomethasone 17-monopropionate (17-BMP), a major metabolite of BDP, following an inhaled dose of HFA-BDP (200 μg as four inhalations from 50 μg/actuation) in five Japanese children with bronchial asthma were quantified and analyzed by a non-compartmental analysis to obtain pharmacokinetic parameters.ResultsThe area under the concentration-time curve from time zero to the last quantifiable time (AUC0-t) was 1659 ± 850 pg • h/mL (arithmetic mean ± standard deviation (SD)), the maximum concentration observed (Cmax) was 825 ± 453 pg/mL and the apparent elimination half-life (t1/2) was 2.1 ± 0.7 hours. The time to reach Cmax (Tmax) was 0.5 hours in all patients. No special relationship was observed between these parameters and age or body weight. These parameters were compared with the previously reported parameters of American children with bronchial asthma. The Japanese/American ratio of the geometric means of each parameter was 1.36 for AUC0-t, 1.04 for Cmax and 1.4 for t1/2. The median of Tmax was 0.5 hours in American patients as well as Japanese patients.ConclusionsThe pharmacokinetics of HFA-BDP in Japanese children with bronchial asthma are reported for the first time and a similarity to those in American children is suggested

The Subaru Deep Field Project: Lymanα\alpha Emitters at Redshift of 6.6

We present new results of a deep optical imaging survey using a narrowband filter (NB921NB921) centered at λ=\lambda = 9196 \AA ~ together with BB, VV, RR, ii^\prime, and zz^\prime broadband filters in the sky area of the Subaru Deep Field which has been promoted as one of legacy programs of the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. We obtained a photometric sample of 58 Lyα\alpha emitter candidates at zz \approx 6.5 -- 6.6 among 180\sim 180 strong NB921NB921-excess (zNB921>1.0z^\prime - NB921 > 1.0) objects together with a color criterion of iz>1.3i^\prime - z^\prime > 1.3. We then obtained optical spectra of 20 objects in our NB921NB921-excess sample and identified at least nine Lyα\alpha emitters at z6.5z \sim 6.5 -- 6.6 including the two emitters reported by Kodaira et al. (2003). Since our Lyα\alpha emitter candidates are free from strong amplification of gravitational lensing, we are able to discuss their observational properties from a statistical point of view. Based on these new results, we obtain a lower limit of the star formation rate density of ρSFR5.5×104\rho_{\rm SFR} \simeq 5.5 \times 10^{-4} h0.7h_{0.7} MM_\odot yr1^{-1} Mpc3^{-3} at z6.6z \approx 6.6, being consistent with our previous estimate. We discuss the nature of star-formation activity in galaxies beyond z=6z=6.Comment: 49 pages, 16 figures, PASJ, Vol. 57, No. 1, in pres
