    Use of different approach in finding catch effort relationship in hook and line fishery in Kombuthurai village of Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu

    Kombuthurai has been described as a fishing village in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu which has gained immense importance by practicing sustainable fishing practices. In Kombuthurai village during 2009-2013, catch per unit effort (CPUE) has varied from 0.20 tonnes to the maximum of 0.25 tonnes during this period. It is interesting to know that despite the range of effort varying from 1598hrs to 1720hrs, the catch remained in the range of 347.4 tonnes to a maximum of 430.8tonnes. The influence of various variables (latitude, longitude, distance, depth, seasons, years and fishing gear type) on CPUE was studied by General Linear Model (GLM) and Generalized Linear Model (GLMs). Normal distribution with identity link function and a gamma distribution with log link function were used in GLMs. The variables that were found to be significant in both of the models and distributions are year and season. GLM model was good fit with R2 ranging from 67.60% to a high of 91.7%.The low and high abundance of CPUE were categorized taking the below and above average CPUE. A binary logistic regression model was used between the CPUE abundance and with above mentioned independent variables. The binary logistic regression model explained 75.4% (Nagelkerke R2) of the variance in high CPUE abundance and correctly classified 88% of cases. The independent variable such as latitude, longitude, depth, and distance added significantly to the model, but the year, season and hooks did not add significantly to the model

    Genetic Mutation Carriers: Special Considerations for Their Influence on a Modern Breast Reconstruction Practice

    With medical advancement, increasing numbers of genetic variations and mutations are being uncovered that offer greater insight into which patients have a predisposition for the development of breast cancer. Reasonable management for these patients includes high-risk surveillance, medical prophylaxis, or bilateral prophylactic mastectomy with immediate reconstruction which is becoming increasingly popular. However, this cohort of patients differs from the average breast cancer patient in that they are typically younger and may have distinct reconstructive objectives for their outcomes. This chapter considers this unique and expanding population, as well as their expectations for surgical outcomes both aesthetically and oncologically. We will discuss the evolving role of social media in this population, with patient to patient virtual information sharing and how this may impact patient referrals in a manner diverging from traditional hospital-based patterns. Furthermore, we discuss how practices in which cutting-edge and novel surgical treatments are available, such as pre-pectoral and single stage reconstruction, and that incorporate team collaboration with the surgical oncologist to deliver aesthetically pleasing results with nipple sparing mastectomy and concealed scars may ultimately be attractive to genetic mutation carriers concerned not only with risk reduction but also post-operative aesthetics

    Ayurvedic management of pituitary macroadenoma-a case report

    Pituitary macroadenoma is an infrequently encountered clinical condition, characterized by a non-metastasizing neoplasm situated within the pituitary gland. This case report endeavours to elucidate the efficacy of ayurvedic interventions in achieving symptomatic resolution. A 44-year-old female patient, residing in Thrissur, diagnosed with features suggestive of pituitary macroadenoma, sought admission to Vaidyaratnam ayurveda college hospital for complaints of generalized pain, heaviness of head, impaired peripheral vision in the left eye, and amenorrhea persisting for approximately 7 months. The case was conclusively diagnosed as Pituitary Macroadenoma and meticulously addressed through therapeutic modalities including takradhara, nasyam, and thalapothichil.  patient was already prescribed with Caberlin tablets at a dosage of 0.25 mg twice weekly, administered nocturnally. Following 21 days of treatment, notable improvement in the LBNQ-Pituitary score was observed from 60 to 21 accompanied by significant symptomatic alleviation. A specific treatment protocol for the management of pituitary macroadenoma is currently unavailable

    Molecular tailoring approach for exploring structures, energetics and properties of clusters

    Molecular Tailoring Approach (MTA) is a method developed for enabling ab initio calculations on prohibitively large molecules or atomic/molecular clusters. A brief review of MTA, a linear scaling technique based on set inclusion and exclusion principle, is provided. The Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MESP) of smaller clusters is exploited for building initial geometries for the larger ones, followed by MTA geometry optimization. The applications of MTA are illustrated with a few test cases such as (CO2)n and Lin clusters employing Density Functional theory (DFT) and a nanocluster of orthoboric acid at the Hartree-Fock (HF) level. Further, a discussion on the geometries and energetics of benzene tetramers and pentamers, treated at the Moller-Plesset second order (MP2) perturbation theory, is given. MTA model is employed for evaluating some cluster properties viz. adiabatic ionization potential, MESP, polarizability, Hessian matrix and infrared frequencies. These property evaluations are carried out on a series of test cases and are seen to offer quite good agreement with those computed by an actual calculation. These case studies highlight the advantages of MTA model calculations vis-a-vis the actual ones with reference to the CPU-time, memory requirements and accuracy

    Trends in marine fish production in Tamil Nadu using regression and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model

    Tamil Nadu is situated in the south eastern coast of the Indian peninsula with a coastal line of 1076 km (13% of the country’s coast line), 0.19 million sq.km of EEZ (9.4 % of total national EEZ) and a continental shelf of about 41,412 sq. km. This is one of the country’s leading state in marine fish production and ranks third in marine fish production. In Tamil Nadu, Ramanathapuram district is a leading maritime district followed by Nagapattinam and Thoothukudi. The objective of this study was to investigate the trends in marine fish production in Tamil Nadu. Yearly fish production data for the period of 1988-1989 to 2012-2013 were analyzed using time-series method called Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model and Regression analysis (curve estimation). In our study, the developed best ARIMA model for Tamil Nadu marine fish production was found to be ARIMA (1, 1, 1) which have the minimum BIC (Bayesian Information Criterion). ARIMA model had got a slightly higher forecasting accuracy rate for forecasting marine fish production of Tamil Nadu than Regression trend analysis. The independent sample test showed there was no significant difference between the two models. The limitations of ARIMA model include its requirement of a long time series data for better forecast. It is basically linear model assuming that data are stationary and have a limited ability to capture non-stationarities and nonlinearities in series data. Both the models indicated that Tamil Nadu marine fish production has plateaued and fishermen should be encouraged to adopt sustainable fishing practices

    Histomorphological spectrum of prostatic lesions: a retrospective analysis of transurethral resection of prostate specimens

    Background: Prostatic diseases like inflammation, benign prostatic hyperplasia and tumors are important causes of mortality and morbidity in males. The incidence of these lesions increases with advancing age. The second most common cancer among males is prostate cancer, next to lung cancer worldwide. Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) is most frequently preformed surgical procedure in the clinical practice. The purpose of the study is to evaluate histomorphological spectrum of prostate lesions in TURP specimen with focus on premalignant lesions and incidental carcinomas.Methods: The present study includes 245 cases of TURP specimen from January 2015 to December 2016 received in the post graduate department of pathology, ASCOMS and Hospital. H and E stained sections were examined. The relevant clinical details pertaining to age, clinical complaints and microscopic details were analysed and compared with other similar studies.Results: Of the total 245 TURP specimen, 223 (91.02%) were of nodular hyperplasia, 14 (5.71%) were of prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and 8 (3.26%) cases were malignant. Benign hyperplasia of prostate (BHP) alone accounted for 91.02% of TURP specimen. Less frequent findings were granulomatous prostatitis in 3.70% and atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (1.22%). All the 8 cases of prostate cancer were incidental carcinoma, 5 of which were poorly differentiated and 3 were moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma.Conclusions: The present study showed that non-neoplastic lesions of prostate are more common than neoplastic ones. The most frequently encountered prostatic lesion was BHP, commonly seen in the age group of 61-70 years. The malignant lesions were common among the males of more than 60 years. TURP can be helpful in early identification of premalignant lesions and incidental prostate cancer which can improve the treatment outcome of patients

    Histopathological patterns of head and neck lesions - a two year retrospective hospital based study

    Background: Head and neck lesions include a spectrum of pathological lesions ranging from simple benign to highly malignant entities. These lesions contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality of patients. The aim of this study was to determine the histological patterns of head and neck lesions, both non- neoplastic and neoplastic and to analyse the data in relation to age, gender, topography.Methods: A two year retrospective study was conducted in the Post Graduate Department of Pathology, ASCOMS and Hospital and histopathological data pertaining to all head and neck lesions was reviewed. Each case was analysed with respect to age, gender, site and histological type.Results: One hundred and forty-five cases from the head and neck region were analysed during this two-year period. Age range was from 3 months to 85 years with maximum cases in the age group of 21-50 years (51.03%). The Male: Female ratio was 1.37:1. In our study, 53.79% benign, 24.13% inflammatory and 22.06% malignant cases were recorded. Maximum number of benign lesions was in the age group of 21-50 years. Malignancies were noted to be higher in ages 51 years and above.  Squamous cell carcinoma was the most common malignancy observed.Conclusions: We conclude that site specific data like this is helpful in evaluating patterns of head and neck lesions and augment the base line data of institute and the region

    Managing Road Safety through the Use of Linked Data and Heat Maps

    Road traffic injuries are a critical public health challenge that requires valuable efforts for effective and sustainable prevention. Worldwide, an estimated 1.2 million people are killed in road crashes each year and as many as 50 million are injured. An analysis of data provided by authoritative sources can be a valuable source for understanding which are the most critical points on the road network. The aim of this paper is to discover data about road accidents in Italy and to provide useful visualization for improving road safety. Starting from the annual report of road accidents of the Automobile Club of Italy, we transform the original data into an RDF dataset according to the Linked Open Data principles and connect it to external datasets. Then, an integration with Open Street Map allows to display the accident data on a map. Here, the final user is able to identify which road sections are most critical based on the number of deaths, injuries or accidents
