Introducción al análisis de redes

Despite its long existence and international acceptance, network theory and analysis is a practically unknown approach in Documentation, both theoretically and methodologically speaking. Fortunately, this trend is changing, inasmuch as network theory and analysis may mean a quantitative and qualitative leap forward in the representation and analysis of the structure of all types of scientific domains, whether geographic, thematic or institutional. The extraordinary advances that have taken place in recent years in the study and analysis of complex networks have been made possible by a number of parallel developments. First of all, with computerized data acquisition and handling, large databases can bemanaged, leading to the emergence of different real network topologies. Secondly, the increase in computing power has made it possible to explore networks with millions of nodes. Thirdly, there is the slow but sure breakdown of boundaries between disciplines. This can be seen by researchers because of their ability to access and use databases that facilitate an understanding of the generic properties of complex networks

Coverage analysis of Scopus: A journal metric approach

Our aim is to compare the coverage of the Scopus database with that of Ulrich, to determine just how homogenous it is in the academic world. The variables taken into account were subject distribution, geographical distribution, distribution by publishers and the language of publication. The analysis of the coverage of a product of this nature should be done in relation to an accepted model, the optimal choice being Ulrich’s Directory, considered the international point of reference for the most comprehensive information on journals published throughout the world. The results described here allow us to draw a profile of Scopus in terms of its coverage by areas – geographic and thematic – and the significance of peer-review in its publications. Both these aspects are highly pragmatic considerations for information retrieval, the evaluation of research, and the design of policies for the use of scientific databases in scientific promotion

Separating aggregate discouraged and added worker effects: the case of a former transition country

Research background: We analyse the added worker effect (AWE) and the discouraged worker effect (DWE) from an aggregate perspective. The first effect refers to an increase in labour force participation in response to a decrease in the wage rate. The second effect refers to the decision by workers who have been unsuccessful in their job search to leave the labour market or to decrease their labour force participation. For our analysis, we use the case of Poland, a country with a persistently low labour force participation rate. Purpose of the article: While previous studies focused on the net of the two effects, we aim to analyse the two effects both separately and simultaneously. We propose a new approach for analysing the two effects. We generalise and model them as resulting from different shocks: (i) the AWE as the result of a negative wage income shock, and (ii) the DWE as the result of a positive job search time shock. The underlying assumption is that both shocks have at least a transitory effect on the labour force participation rate. However, we also track the potential long-lasting effects of these shocks, and we analyse the reactions of gender and age groups to them. While this approach demonstrates the robustness of our results, it also provides the range of the sensitivity, as it shows that there are large differences in the magnitude of the AWE and the DWE for different labour market cohorts. Methods: We use the multivariate unobserved component model to extract the AWE and the DWE, and we then use VAR models, applying sign and exclusion restrictions to model the underlying shocks. We use quarterly data for Poland in 1995?2019. Most of these data come from the Labour Force Survey, while the rest come from Statistics Poland. Findings & value added: In contrast to previous literature, which analysed only the net effect of the two effects, we model the AWE and the DWE separately. Contrary to the findings of previous research, our approach seems to confirm that both effects are simultaneously present in the labour market, and both effects influence the labour force participation rate. Thus, we find that both effects are significant. Specifically, we show that the AWE is stronger, but transitory; while the DWE is weaker, but long-lasting

Relativistic current densities for bound spin-orbit partners and the longitudinal-transverse response in (e,ép) processes

Scalar, baryon and vector-current densities in coordinate and momentum space are calculated within a relativistic mean-field model. The role of the low components of the bound nucleon wave function is investigated in detail for different spin-orbit partner shells. We show that the relative importance of the negative-energy projection components can be explained from the different quantum numbers involved in the relativistic wave function. This fact has proved to be important in the analysis of various electron scattering observables even for low-medium values of the bound nucleon momentum.DGICYT PB/95–0123 PB/95–0533–

Evolution of the formal quality indicators of the web spaces of university libraries in Spain

The need to measure and assess the electronic information made available by the Web has given rise to the development of indicators that can be used to evaluate the final quality of this information. Web spaces of the informational units, which include virtual university libraries, are prime candidates for such a process of assessment. The present study has a look at the quality of the informational services supplied by virtual university libraries in Spain, adopting as the variable of analysis the evolution that certain quality indicators of a formal character have exhibited over an exemplary period of six months. The interpretation of our results makes manifest an overall satisfactory evolution, though the breakdown by regions or Autonomous Communities of Spain reveals deficiencies in some cases

Tunnelling and swelling in triassic sulphate-bearing rocks: part II: case studies from Jura Mountains

Part II of this series of paper deals with the phenomenology of swelling in tunnels from Jura Mountains (Switzerland) excavated through the Gipskeuper and the Anhydritgruppe. The main features of expansions observed in the presented case studies are summarized and the performance of resisting and yielding support systems is compared. Evidences presented in this series of papers indicate that the transformation of anhydrite into gypsum is not a reasonable explanation for long-term expansive phenomena occurring in sulphate-bearing rocks. It is suggested that these phenomena are strongly related to rock degradation due to both tunneling induced drainage towards the bottom of excavations and tunneling induced ventilation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
