    Variance component estimation and sire evaluation for calving ease and livability in Angus cattle

    Calving performance records were used to study the inheritance of calving ease and livability. Data were 965,417 calving records from Angus field data and 6,092 records from a crossbreeding experiment designed to produce three synthetic breeds of small, medium and large size. The Angus data were collected between 1972-85 and those of the synthetic cattle between 1978-87. The objectives of the study were: (1) to characterize the environmental and genetic factors which influence calving ease and livability; (2) to estimate variance/covariance components; (3) to determine selection criteria;Two Angus data sets, composed of 19 and 34 herds were used to estimate genetic parameters using a sire-maternal grandsire model. The frequency of dystocia was low in both the Angus (3.61% assisted births) and the synthetic cattle (7.40% assisted births). Sex of calf and parity of dam were important causal components of calving difficulty. In the synthetic cattle, farm and size were also significant causes of dystocia. The Angus data indicated a threshold for birth weight on calving difficulty at around 70 lbs;For calving ease, the genetic correlations between direct and maternal components were estimated at -0.86 and -0.68. Maternal heritability (0.27 and 0.20) was higher than the direct heritability (0.21 and 0.07). There was little genetic variation in livability. Parameter estimates were within the expected range in the sample of 19 herds. Direct heritability was 0.04 while maternal heritability was 0.09 and the direct/maternal genetic correlation was -0.75. In the synthetic cattle, heritabilities for birth weight, calving ease and livability were 0.25, 0.05 and 0.06 respectively. The genetic correlation between birth weight and calving ease was 0.50, while livability and calving ease were essentially uncorrelated. In general, there were major differences among the three size groups. Calving difficulty was higher in the large group and about the same in the small and medium groups. Birth weight tended to increase linearly across the three size groups with the increase from small to medium, to large. Differences among generations were less variable with no specific trends

    Effect of a single breeding season on the reproductive performance of beef cattle

    Foi analisado o comportamento reprodutivo de 47 vacas 1/2 Canchim, sistematicamente submetidas a estação de monta de 1.10 a 31.1, com uma proporção touro/vaca de 1/23. O trabalho envolve três anos (1979 a 1981), período em que a taxa média de natalidade foi 61,7%. Ano teve efeito significativo sobre a taxa de natalidade (P<0,05). O melhor resultado foi obtido em 1979 (82,9%) e o pior em 1981 (46,8%). No estudo das causas da queda linear da fertilidade entre os anos, concluiu-se que o problema está provavelmente correlacionado com o emprego de uma única estação de monta anual. No conjunto dos três anos, de 54 vacas que não pariram, 27 (50%) tinham parido na segunda metade da estação de nascimentos dos anos anteriores, ao passo que, de 87 vacas que pariram, 72 (82,7%) tinham apresentado partos na primeira metade da estação de nascimentos dos anos anteriores. A análise estatística, efetuada com uso do teste qui-quadrado, mostrou resultado altamente significativo (P<0,001), indicando não ser devida ao acaso a tendência de vacas que parem na segunda metade da estação de nascimentos não parirem no ano subsequente, com uso de uma única estação de monta anual. Estes resultados indicam que, em condições de pastagens naturais e sem suplementação alimentar, uma única estação de monta anual tende a diminuir a fertilidade das vacas.The reproductive performance of 47 half-blood Canchim cows, systematically exposed to a breeding season from October 1st through January 31st was studied with a bull/cow ratio of 1/23. Birth rate obtained during the three years (1979 - 1981) was 61,7%. Year was a significant (P<0,05) source of variation on birth rate. The highest calving rate (82,9%) occurred in 1979 and the lowest (46,8%) in 1981. In the study of causes of linear decline in fertility among the years, it was concluded that the problem is probably correlated with the use of only one breeding season per year. Considering the three years altogether, from the 54 cows that did not calve, 27 (50%) had given birth to a calf during the second half of the birth seasons of the previous years; from the 87 cows that succeeded in calving, 72 (82,7%) had dropped their calves during the first half of the birth seasons of the previous years. The statistical analysis performed through the X-square test showed significance at the (P<0,001) level, indicating that the tendency of cows calving in the second half of the birth season not to have a calf in the following year could not be accounted for as by chance. These results indicate that, on conditions of natural grazing without supplementation, only one single breeding season per year tends to reduce fertility of cows

    El presente trabajo de investigación surgió a partir de la observación de la situación actual del clima laboral que existe en la agencia del Banco Continental BBVA, Balta, ubicada en la ciudad de Chiclayo, y del diagnóstico se generó una propuesta de mejora en el aspecto antes mencionado para dicha entidad bancaria. Por lo tanto, el presente trabajo de investigación se trazó como objetivo: desarrollar una propuesta de un plan de mejora, basado en la teoría de Litwin y Stinger, para el clima laboral de los trabajadores del Banco Continental BBVA Balta-Chiclayo. Asimismo, nos planteamos la siguiente hipótesis: la propuesta de un plan de mejora basado en la teoría de Litwin y Stinger mejorará el clima laboral de los trabajadores del Banco Continental BBVA Balta-Chiclayo. El presente estudio es importante por cuanto pretende despertar la reflexión de la alta dirección de las organizaciones sobre el clima laboral, en las que se desenvuelve el personal de cada institución financiera del sector de la banca comercial. Se concluye, los trabajadores de la agencia del banco BBVA – Continental: conocen claramente la estructura organizativa, falta trabajar en equipo, perciben las recompensas como un estímulo por el trabajo bien realizado, asumen riesgos, existe un clima laboral apto para el trabajo, generalmente son indiferentes sobre la existencia de un espíritu de ayuda, las normas de rendimiento son bastante alto, existen conflictos y el grado de identidad de los trabajadores con la empresa es alto

    El proyecto consiste en la construcci?n de una Planta Automatizada de Tratamiento de Aguas ?cidas en la UM Orcopampa, ubicado en el departamento de Arequipa. El mismo es considerado como sostenible debido a que tiene como finalidad, minimizar el impacto de contaminaci?n en las poblaciones aleda?as, ganader?a y agricultura cercanos al proyecto. La planta tratar? las aguas ?cidas del interior de tres bocaminas (Prometida, Nazareno y Rampa Mario), los cuales son vertidos al Rio Chilcaymarca; Para esto se busca elevar el nivel de PH del agua para cumplir con la normativa ambiental vigente. La planta a su vez estar? dividida en planta de 4 reactivos y planta de 1 reactivo, en los cuales se adicionan qu?micos(reactivos) para el tratamiento del agua (cal, floculante, redimex, coagulante y ?cido sulf?rico). Esta adici?n es automatizada para minimizar el consumo de los qu?micos. Para la ejecuci?n del proyecto se determin? utilizar personal propio de CMPSAA y personal tercero. El proyecto tiene una duraci?n de dieciocho meses y un presupuesto de 17 Millones de D?lares

    Post-intervention Status in Patients With Refractory Myasthenia Gravis Treated With Eculizumab During REGAIN and Its Open-Label Extension

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether eculizumab helps patients with anti-acetylcholine receptor-positive (AChR+) refractory generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) achieve the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) post-intervention status of minimal manifestations (MM), we assessed patients' status throughout REGAIN (Safety and Efficacy of Eculizumab in AChR+ Refractory Generalized Myasthenia Gravis) and its open-label extension. METHODS: Patients who completed the REGAIN randomized controlled trial and continued into the open-label extension were included in this tertiary endpoint analysis. Patients were assessed for the MGFA post-intervention status of improved, unchanged, worse, MM, and pharmacologic remission at defined time points during REGAIN and through week 130 of the open-label study. RESULTS: A total of 117 patients completed REGAIN and continued into the open-label study (eculizumab/eculizumab: 56; placebo/eculizumab: 61). At week 26 of REGAIN, more eculizumab-treated patients than placebo-treated patients achieved a status of improved (60.7% vs 41.7%) or MM (25.0% vs 13.3%; common OR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.1-4.5). After 130 weeks of eculizumab treatment, 88.0% of patients achieved improved status and 57.3% of patients achieved MM status. The safety profile of eculizumab was consistent with its known profile and no new safety signals were detected. CONCLUSION: Eculizumab led to rapid and sustained achievement of MM in patients with AChR+ refractory gMG. These findings support the use of eculizumab in this previously difficult-to-treat patient population. CLINICALTRIALSGOV IDENTIFIER: REGAIN, NCT01997229; REGAIN open-label extension, NCT02301624.
