Sabine Tittel, Die “Anathomie” in der “Grande Chirurgie” des Gui de Chauliac.

Did the EU Airport Charges Directive Lead to Lower Aeronautical Charges? Empirical Evidence From a Diff-in-Diff Research Design

    Get PDF
Abstract In this study we analyse the impact of the EU Airport Charges Directive on the level of aeronautical charges for EU airports serving between 2 and 20 million passengers, over the period 2008–2017, using a difference-in-differences research design. We find that the transposition of the Airport Charges Directive into national legislation has led to a statistically significant reduction in the level of airport charges, but only after a few years. We also find the existence of heterogeneous treatment effects that depend on the quality of transposition of the Directive

Why tackling late government payments to businesses should be a key priority

    Get PDF
Every year, many businesses across Europe go bankrupt as a result of payment delays. For this reason, the EU established a Late Payment Directive in 2011. Maurizio Conti, Leandro Elia, Antonella Ferrara and Massimiliano Ferraresi assess the impact of the directive, finding it has had some notable positive effects for the financial position of firms. Given the strain many businesses are under as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak, it is now more vital than ever for policymakers to address the problem

High-Speed Railways and Firms Total Factor Productivity: Evidence from a Quasi-Natural Experiment

    Get PDF
The focus of this study is to assess the causal impact of the connection of a local area to a high-speed rail network (HSR) on firms' total factor productivity (TFP). The quasi-random location of the HSR station in the Italian city of Reggio Emilia is exploited in a Difference-in Differences (DiD) research design applied to a large sample of firms, observed over the period 2010-2018. The results suggest that the opening of the HSR station improved treated firms' TFP of about 5%; in particular, such effect is larger for firms closer to the HSR station and slightly increases over the sample period. We also find that the impact of the connection to the HSR station is heterogeneous across industries and depends on firms' size and past productivity. Overall results are robust to a large number of sensitivity checks and falsification tests

Lifelong impairment in episodic re-experiencing: Neuropsychological and neuroimaging examination of a new case of Severely Deficient Autobiographical Memory

    Get PDF
: Autobiographical memory (AM) represents a complex and multimodal cognitive function, that allows an individual to collect and retrieve personal events and facts, enabling to develop and maintain the continuity of the self over time. Here we describe the case of DR (acronym of the fictional name Doriana Rossi), a 53-year-old woman, who complains of a specific and lifelong deficit in recalling autobiographical episodes. Along with an extensive neuropsychological assessment, DR underwent a structural and functional MRI examination to further define this impairment. The neuropsychological assessment revealed a deficit in episodic re-experiencing of her own personal life events. DR showed reduced cortical thickness in the Retrosplenial Complex in the left hemisphere, and in the Lateral Occipital Cortex, in the Prostriate Cortex and the Angular Gyrus in the right hemisphere. An altered pattern of activity in the calcarine cortex was detected during ordering of autobiographical events according to her own personal timeline. The present study provides further evidence about the existence of a severely deficient autobiographical memory condition in neurologically healthy people, with otherwise preserved cognitive functioning. Furthermore, the present data provide new important insights into neurocognitive mechanisms underpinning such a developmental condition

Il progetto di didattica inclusiva bilingue per alunni sordi dell’Istituto Barozzi di milano: esiti di ricerca sulle competenze linguistiche degli allievi nativi segnanti

The article shows the result of a research carried on by CeDisMa, Research Center on Disability and Marginality of the UniversitĂ  Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, during the 2016/2017 academicyear at the Barozzi Institute of Milan which involved 20 deaf students, mainly native signers. Since the academic year 2008/2009, the school proposes a bilingual path which includes both oral language and sign based one. The deaf educator manages a LIS lab for all students involved in the project; some teachers know the LIS language while several external aids and ad hoc labs support the project. The attention is on linguistic skills achieved by the deaf students in LIS and their written text comprehension, specific attention is given to native signers. The scope is to verify the effectiveness of implementing the signed L1 and oral L2, the correlation to development and interaction as well as the improvement expectations.
