Milk peptides; effect on the enzymatic hydrolysis of sodium caseinate

    Get PDF
Sodium caseinate (NaCN) was hydrolyzed using Rhozyme 41 (Rh41), Neutrase (Neu) and plasmin (PL) to obtain peptide preparations termed; Na-Cas-P-Rh41, Na-Cas-P-Neu, and Na-Cas-P-Plasmin, respectively. Indigenous whey peptides (IWP) were obtained from fresh sweet whey, at different levels of ufconcentration, by a precipitation method described earlier. These peptide fractions were then used to observe their effect on the activity of some proteases. All peptide preparations depressed enzyme activity. Na-Cas-P-Rh41 was the most powerful inhibitor of enzyme activity and decreased the activity of trypsin, Rh41, Neu. and PL by 15, 32, 50, and 14%, respectively. IWP markedly depressed activity of Rh41. The degree of uf-concentration of whey from which IWP was obtained was directly related to degree of inhibition

    Whey pretreatments before ultrafiltration

Whey is a by-product of cheesemaking. Whey dry matter contains mainly lactose, but also valuable whey proteins. The aim of this study was to develop improvements to whey protein membrane isolation processes. In our trials CaCl2 -added, pH-adjusted and heat-treated wheys were found to have MF (microfiltration) permeate fluxes about 30% higher than in untreated MF whey. The total solids and protein content of the MF permeates decreased compared to the original wheys. UF (ultrafiltration) trials were conducted using MF whey to compare it with centrifugally separated whey. The MF whey consistently maintained an UF flux about 1.5 to 2.5 times higher than that of the separated whey. Differently treated MF whey UF permeate fluxes also showed a difference. With CaCl2 addition, pH adjustment and heat treatment, the UF permeate fluxes were about 20 to 40% higher than when only MF was used. The total solids content decreased in each trial. The protein content of the UF concentrate also decreased compared to the MF permeate. The (β-lg (β-lactoglobulin) and α-la (α-lactalbumin) content was almost the same in UF concentrates as in MF permeates

Bullying involvement in relation to personality disorders : a prospective follow-up of 508 inpatient adolescents

We examined the association of bullying behavior in adolescence to personality disorder (PD) diagnosed in early adulthood. The study sample consisted of 508 adolescents (300 girls, 208 boys) who were admitted to psychiatric inpatient treatment between April 2001 and March 2006. Data were based on semi-structured K-SADSPL-interviews and hospital treatments extracted from the Care Register for Health Care (CRHC). At the end of 2013, details of psychiatric diagnoses recorded on hospital discharges and outpatient visits were extracted from the CRHC. This study showed that female victims of bullying have an almost fourfold likelihood of developing a PD later in life compared to adolescents with no involvement in bullying behavior. Most of the females had Borderline PD. Female adolescents diagnosed with anxiety disorder during adolescence had an over threefold risk of developing a PD during late adolescence or early adulthood. Conversely, we found no associations between bullying involvement among men in adolescence and subsequent PDs. Bullying victimization may influence the development of PDs among females. Adolescent services should pay particular attention to female victims of bullying and those displaying symptoms of anxiety disorders.Peer reviewe
