Malmquist Bias and the Distance to the Virgo Cluster
This paper investigates the impact of Malmquist bias on the distance to the
Virgo cluster determined by the H_0 Key Project using M100, and consequently on
the derived value of H_0. Malmquist bias is a volume-induced statistical effect
which causes the most probable distance to be different from the raw distance
measured. Consideration of the bias in the distance to the Virgo cluster raises
this distance and lowers the calculated value of H_0. Monte Carlo simulations
of the cluster have been run for several possible distributions of spirals
within the cluster and of clusters in the local universe. Simulations
consistent with known information regarding the cluster and the errors of
measurement result in a bias of about 6.5%-8.5%. This corresponds to an
unbiased distance of 17.2-17.4 Mpc and a value of H_0 in the range 80-82
km/s/Mpc.
The problem of determining the bias to Virgo illustrates several key points
regarding Malmquist bias. Essentially all conventional astronomical distance
measurements are subject to this bias. In addition, the bias accumulates when
an attempt is made to construct "distance ladders" from measurements which are
individually biased. As will be shown in the case of Virgo, the magnitude and
direction of the bias are sensitive to the spatial distribution of the parent
poputation from which the observed object is drawn - a distribution which is
often poorly known. This leads to uncertainty in the magnitude of the bias, and

The impact of self-heating and SiGe strain-relaxed buffer thickness on the analog performance of strained Si nMOSFETs
The impact of the thickness of the silicon–germanium strain-relaxed buffer (SiGe SRB) on the analog performance of strained Si nMOSFETs is investigated. The negative drain conductance caused by self-heating at high power levels leads to negative self-gain which can cause anomalous circuit behavior like non-linear phase shifts. Using AC and DC measurements, it is shown that reducing the SRB thickness improves the analog design space and performance by minimizing self-heating. The range of terminal voltages that leverage positive self-gain in 0.1 μm strained Si MOSFETs fabricated on 425 nm SiGe SRBs is increased by over 100% compared with strained Si devices fabricated on conventional SiGe SRBs 4 μm thick. Strained Si nMOSFETs fabricated on thin SiGe SRBs also show 45% improvement in the self-gain compared with the Si control as well as 25% enhancement in the on-state performance compared with the strained Si nMOSFETs on the 4 μm SiGe SRB. The extracted thermal resistance is 50% lower in the strained Si device on the thin SiGe SRB corresponding to a 30% reduction in the temperature rise compared with the device fabricated on the 4 μm SiGe SRB. Comparisons between the maximum drain voltages for positive self-gain in the strained Si devices and the ITRS projections of supply-voltage scaling show that reducing the thickness of the SiGe SRB would be necessary for future technology nodes
Gluon polarization in the proton
We combine heavy-quark renormalization group arguments with our understanding
of the nucleon's wavefunction to deduce a bound on the gluon polarization Delta
g in the proton. The bound is consistent with the values extracted from spin

Observation of Parity Nonconservation in Møller Scattering
We report a measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in fixed target electron-electron (Møller) scattering: A_(PV) = [-175 ± 30(stat)± 20(syst)] X 10^(-9). This first direct observation of parity nonconservation in Møller scattering leads to a measurement of the electron’s weak charge at low energy Q^e_W = -0:053 ± 0:011. This is consistent with the standard model expectation at the current level of precision: sin^2θ_W = (M_Z)_(MS) = 0:2293 ± 0:0024(stat) ± 0:0016(syst) ± 0:0006(theory)
Ranking ligand affinity for the DNA minor groove by experiment and simulation
The structural and thermodynamic basis for the strength and selectivity of the interactions of minor-groove binders (MGBs) with DNA is not fully understood. In 2003 we reported the first example of a thiazole containing MGB that bound in a phase shifted pattern that spanned 6 base-pairs rather than the usual 4 (for tricyclic distamycin-like compounds). Since then, using DNA footprinting, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry and molecular dynamics, we have established that the flanking bases around the central 4 being read by the ligand have subtle effects on recognition. We have investigated the effect of these flanking sequences on binding and the reasons for the differences and established a computational method to rank ligand affinity against varying DNA sequences
Optimal eavesdropping on QKD without quantum memory
We consider the security of the BB84, six-state and SARG04 quantum key
distribution protocols when the eavesdropper doesn't have access to a quantum
memory. In this case, Eve's most general strategy is to measure her ancilla
with an appropriate POVM designed to take advantage of the post-measurement
information that will be released during the sifting phase of the protocol.
After an optimization on all the parameters accessible to Eve, our method
provides us with new bounds for the security of six-state and SARG04 against a
memoryless adversary. In particular, for the six-state protocol we show that
the maximum QBER for which a secure key can be extracted is increased from

vbyCaHbeta CCD Photometry of Clusters. VIII. The Super-Metal Rich, Old Open Cluster NGC 6791
CCD photometry on the intermediate-band vbyCaHbeta system is presented for
the metal-rich, old open cluster, NGC 6791. Preliminary analysis led to [Fe/H]
above +0.4 with an anomalously high reddening and an age below 5 Gyr. A revised
calibration between (b-y)_0 and [Fe/H] at a given temperature shows that the
traditional color-metallicity relations underestimate the color of the turnoff
stars at high metallicity. With the revised relation, the metallicity from hk
and the reddening for NGC 6791 become [Fe/H] = +0.45 +/- 0.04 and E(b-y) =
0.113 +/- 0.012 or E(B-V) = 0.155 +/- 0.016. Using the same technique,
reanalysis of the photometry for NGC 6253 produces [Fe/H] = +0.58 +/-0.04 and
E(b-y) = 0.120 +/- 0.018 or E(B-V) = 0.160 +/- 0.025. The errors quoted include
both the internal and external errors. For NGC 6791, the metallicity from m_1
is a factor of two below that from hk, a result that may be coupled to the
consistently low metal abundance from DDO photometry of the cluster and the
C-deficiency found from high dispersion spectroscopy. E(B-V) is the same value
predicted from Galactic reddening maps. With E(B-V) = 0.15 and [Fe/H] = +0.45,
the available isochrones predict an age of 7.0 +/- 1.0 Gyr and an apparent
modulus of (m-M) = 13.60 +/- 0.15, with the dominant source of the uncertainty
arising from inconsistencies among the isochrones. The reanalysis of NGC 6253
with the revised lower reddening confirms that on both the hk and m_1
metallicity scales, NGC 6253, while less than half the age of NGC 6791, remains
