    Antiviral Effects of a Synthetic Aluminium-Magnesium Silicate on Avian Influenza Virus

    Effects of a synthetic Aluminium-Magnesium Silicate (AMS) on Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) were tested. Equal amounts of H5N1 AIV samples and of AMS were mixed, left one hour, at room temperature before centrifuging. The supernatants were remeasured and tested for viral titre, for Mean Death Time (MDT) and Embryo Mortality Rate (EMR) of chicken eggs. Volumes of the viral samples reduced at rate of 23.4 ± 5.48 %. Viral titres reduced significantly (P from HA, 73 ± 32.72 to 1.4 ±0.43). Also, mortality of infected embryos reduced from 100 % to 65% while MDT of those that died, increased significantly (P = 0.001) from 76 ± 4.38 to 130 ±17.27 hours. When incubation with AMS was repeated on portions of the same sample, MDT increased from 64 to 104 hours with the portion incubated once. Two AIV portions on which incubation with AMS was repeated could not kill chick embryos

    Urine albumin levels were evaluated in mice infected with Trypanosoma brucei using urine strips (Medi-Test Combi 9, Macherey Nagel, Neumann-Neander-Strabe 6-8, D-52355 Duren). The urine albumin level in some of the infected mice began to increase from the 6th day post-infection, and by the 12th day all infected mice showed a high level of albumin in urine which progressively increased with time. There was a high level of significance (F=161.9025, P<0.001) with mean urine albumin levels being significantly higher in trypanosome-infected mice (1.9302) than non infected control mice (1.4771) As infection progressed there was also a significant increase (F=152721, P<0.001) with mean urine albumin levels increasing with time. It was concluded that urine albumin could be used to indicate trypanosomosis.Razina albumina u miševa invadiranih protozoonom Trypanosoma brucei određena je aproksimativnom metodom s urin trakom (Medi Test Combi 9, Macherey-Nagel, Neumann- Neander-Strabe 6-8, D 52355 Duren).     Comparison of NDVI-2 Vaccine EID50 Titre Values After Three Weeks of Freight Under Cold Monitored Storage Condition

    The EID50 titres per dose values of three batches of NDVI-2 were determined as log10 EID50 7.7, 7.6 and 6.8 after production, against reference EID50 5.5 per dose. These values were log10 EID50 2.2, 2.1 and 1.3 above the reference EID50 for NDVI-2. These vaccines were re-evaluated at PANVAC laboratory Debre-Zeit, prior to release. The initial EID50 values were compared with EID50 values obtained by the certifying laboratory, after three weeks of cold monitored freight. The packaged vaccine cold storage temperature of +1.9 oC prior to the shipment, was recorded with the aid of a temperature logger. The temperature logger was set to record and retain packaged vaccine cold storage temperature at hourly intervals during the freight. At the end of three-week freight, the temperature logger readings were analysed, and temperature range of -2.48 oC to 7.7 oC was observed throughout the freight. However, sudden rise in packaged vaccine storage temperature from 7.7 oC to 22.28 oC was noticed on the last day of freight. The initial EID50 titre per dose values, when compared with EID50 log10 6.5, 6.8, and 6.6 per dose obtained by the certifying laboratory after the cold monitored freight and re-evaluation, showed EID50 titre loss of log10 EID50 1.2, 0.8 and 0.6, respectively. The observed EID50 loss could not invalidate these vaccine batches, considering that these had an initial EID50 titre per dose values that were well above the reference EID50 titre for NDVI-2.
