There is a high incidence of mathematical errors on the newspapers articles of several countries, namely in Portugal. Actually, several authors point out that mathematics is misused in the news, although it is essential in such context. This problem, according to American authors, is also due to the low numeracy level of journalists, which follows as a result of the training they have. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to present the results of a study that investigates the numeracy of students attending a Communication Sciences course. First, the study assess if the numeracy levels of the students match the needs of a journalist, in terms of applicability of mathematical skills. Secondly it aims to evaluate if the mathematical training that students have during the course contributes to improve numeracy. The results indicate that the students numeracy levels are lower than what is necessary for journalistic work, and that the mathematics curricular component of the course appears not to contribute to the improvement of numeracy level
Chebyshev polynomials over finite fields and reversibility of σ-automata on square grids
AbstractUsing number theory on function fields and algebraic number fields, we prove results about Chebyshev polynomials over finite prime fields to investigate reversibility of two-dimensional additive cellular automata on finite square grids. For example, we show that there are infinitely many primitive irreversible additive cellular automata on square grids when the base field has order two or three
Partial Derivative Automaton for Regular Expressions with Shuffle
We generalize the partial derivative automaton to regular expressions with
shuffle and study its size in the worst and in the average case. The number of
states of the partial derivative automata is in the worst case at most 2^m,
where m is the number of letters in the expression, while asymptotically and on
average it is no more than (4/3)^m
Um problema de grandes denominadores
Fixado , escolhamos aleatoriamente e consideremos .
(M,a1) ,
then repeats the process by randomly sorting out a2 and letting M2 = M1
(M1,a2) , and
so on. Given M, n 2 N, what is the probability, say P(n,M), that Mn = 1?
Clearly P(1,M) = 1
M and the numbers P(n,M) satisfy the recurrence relation
P(n+1,M) = P
d|M
'(d)
M P(n, d), where ' is the Euler function. This implies that,
with probability one, Mn = 1 for some n. The map : Q ! Q given by (x) =
xdxe induces a deterministic dynamical system modeling this random behavior.
The question we address now is whether the orbit by of any rational bigger than
1 enters Z. In [1] we proved that the set of irreducible fractions with denominator
M whose orbits by reach an integer in exactly n iterations is a disjoint union of
congruence classes modulo Mn+1. The proof of this result suggested how to build
an efficient algorithm to decide if an orbit fails to hit an integer before a prescribed
number of iterations have elapsed. Besides, from the number of those classes, we
deduced that, with probability 1, the orbit of a rational in [1,+1[ enters Z.

Maths in the news: uses and errors in Portuguese newspapers
The authors present a quantitative content analysis to assess the use ofmathematical information in the news of five generalist Portuguesenewspapers during a three-month period. Misuses of mathematics werealso studied in this context. Results show that only a small percentage ofthe news articles have mathematical information when compared toprevious studies in the field. Furthermore, over 30% of the news articlescontaining mathematical information have some type of mathematicalerror. Different categories of errors are defined and reasons why thesemight occur are discussed
