    The IR has Two Faces: Positioning Institutional Repositories for Success

    This article will describe ongoing efforts at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries to evolve the role of the institutional repository (IR) and to effectively position it within the context of the Libraries’ collections, research support, and scholarly communication services. A major component of this process is re-examining the fundamental aims of the IR and aligning it to the Libraries and the campus strategic goals. The authors situate UNLV Libraries’ experience within the context of the current literature to provide background and reasoning for our decision to pursue two, at times conflicting, aims for the IR: one for scholarly communication and another for research administration

    In the recent Crick Committee report on Education for Citizenship and the Teaching of Democracy in Schools , citizenship and service learning has made a welcome reappearance on the educational agenda, and the consultation document on Millennium Volunteering, for young people between 16 and 25, has placed an important emphasis on civic values. Religious leaders, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Robert Carey and the Chief Rabbi, Dr. Jonathan Sacks, have called for a renewed sense of moral responsibility. At present all the three main political parties appeal to the electorate\u27s sense of civic responsibility and the New Labour government sees this as a key feature of the supposedly new third way in British politics

    UnlabelledAlthough much work on the biochemistry of the key enzymes of bacterial perchlorate reduction, chlorite dismutase, and perchlorate reductase has been published, understanding of the molecular mechanisms of this metabolism has been somewhat hampered by the lack of a clear model system amenable to genetic manipulation. Using transposon mutagenesis and clean deletions, genes important for perchlorate reduction in Azospira suillum PS have been identified both inside and outside the previously described perchlorate reduction genomic island (PRI). Transposon mutagenesis identified 18 insertions in 11 genes that completely abrogate growth via reduction of perchlorate but have no phenotype during denitrification. Of the mutants deficient in perchlorate reduction, 14 had insertions that were mapped to eight different genes within the PRI, highlighting its importance in this metabolism. To further explore the role of these genes, we also developed systems for constructing unmarked deletions and for complementing these deletions. Using these tools, every core gene in the PRI was systematically deleted; 8 of the 17 genes conserved in the PRI are essential for perchlorate respiration, including 3 genes that comprise a unique histidine kinase system. Interestingly, the other 9 genes in the PRI are not essential for perchlorate reduction and may thus have unknown functions during this metabolism. We present a model detailing our current understanding of perchlorate reduction that incorporates new concepts about this metabolism.ImportanceAlthough perchlorate is generated naturally in the environment, groundwater contamination is largely a result of industrial activity. Bacteria capable of respiring perchlorate and remediating contaminated water have been isolated, but relatively little is known about the biochemistry and genetics of this process. Here we used two complementary approaches to identify genes involved in perchlorate reduction. Most of these genes are located on a genomic island, which is potentially capable of moving between organisms. Some of the genes identified are known to be directly involved in the metabolism of perchlorate, but other new genes likely regulate the metabolism in response to environmental signals. This work has uncovered new questions about the regulation, energetics, and evolution of perchlorate reduction but also presents the tools to address them

    This paper will report on the results of a study of library reorganizations in the literature. The authors identified five steps common to all library reorganizations, and this paper describes those steps as well as two management change theories most mentioned in the literature--the eight-step process of change by John Kotter and Reframing Organizations by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal. The paper will draw conclusions formed by a comparison of these theoretical models to the practice and real life experience of reorganizations as described by libraries in the literature

    Towards Role Based Hypothesis Evaluation for Health Data Mining

    Data mining researchers have long been concerned with the application of tools to facilitate and improve data analysis on large, complex data sets. The current challenge is to make data mining and knowledge discovery systems applicable to a wider range of domains, among them health. Early work was performed over transactional, retail based data sets, but the attraction of finding previously unknown knowledge from the ever increasing amounts of data collected from the health domain is an emerging area of interest and specialisation. The problem is finding a solution that is suitably flexible to allow for generalised application whilst being specific enough to provide functionality that caters for the nuances of each role within the domain. The need for a more granular approach to problem solving in other areas of information technology has resulted in the use of role based solutions. This paper discusses the progress to date in developing a role oriented solution to the problem of providing for the diverse requirements of health domain data miners and defining the foundation for determining what constitutes an interesting discovery in an area as complex as health

    The role of copper in disulfiram-induced toxicity and radiosensitisation of cancer cells.

    Abstract Disulfiram has been used for several decades in the treatment of alcoholism. It now shows promise as an anti-cancer drug and radiosensitizer. Proposed mechanisms of action include the induction of oxidative stress and inhibition of proteasome activity. Our purpose was to determine the potential of disulfiram to enhance the anti-tumor efficacy of external beam -irradiation and 131I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (131I-MIBG), a radiopharmaceutical used for the therapy of neuroendocrine tumors. Methods: The role of copper in disulfiram-induced toxicity was investigated by clonogenic assay after treatment of human SK-N-BE(2c) neuroblastoma and UVW/NAT glioma cells. Synergistic interaction between disulfiram and radiotherapy was evaluated by combination index analysis. Tumor growth delay was determined in vitro using multicellular tumor spheroids and in vivo using human tumor xenografts in athymic mice. Results: Escalating disulfiram dosage caused a biphasic reduction in the surviving fraction of clonogens. Clonogenic cell kill after treatment with disulfiram concentrations less than 4 M was copper-dependent, whereas cytotoxicity at concentrations greater than 10 M was caused by oxidative stress. The cytotoxic effect of disulfiram was maximal when administered with equimolar copper. Likewise, disulfiram’s radiosensitization of tumor cells was copper-dependent. Furthermore, disulfiram treatment enhanced the toxicity of 131I-MIBG to spheroids and xenografts expressing the noradrenaline transporter. Conclusions: The results demonstrate that (i) the cytotoxicity of disulfiram was copper-dependent; (ii) molar excess of disulfiram relative to copper resulted in attenuation of disulfiram-mediated cytotoxicity; (iii) copper was required for the radiosensitizing activity of disulfiram and (iv) copper-complexed disulfiram enhanced the efficacy not only of external beam radiation but also of targeted radionuclide therapy in the form of 131I-MIBG. Therefore disulfiram may have anti-cancer potential in combination with radiotherapy

    Keramik Peranakan China adalah sebuah bentuk kerajinan gerabah yang muncul atas perpaduan budaya Melayu dan China yang banyak berkembang di daerah Asia Tenggara yang meliputi Singapura, Malaysia dan Indonesia. Kerajinan yang pertama kali muncul di abad 19 ini pertama kali dibawa oleh para pedagang China yang singgah di pelabuhan-pelabuhan Melayu yang kemudian menetap dan menerapkan budaya asal mereka dengan menyesuaikan gaya yang telah ada di Negara-negara Melayu tersebut. Keramik ini biasanya sering ditemukan sebagai peralatan rumah tangga sebagai peralatan masak dan makan yang memiliki ciri khas warna pastel yang cerah dengan motif dominan flora seperti sulur tanaman dan bunga peonies, dan motif burung phoenix.Ragam hias pada keramik Peranakan China ini memiliki arti sebagai pembawa kemakmuran, keseimbangan dan kesuburan. Setelah berkembang selama bertahun-tahun dalam kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat Melayu, ragam hias ini akan dicoba diaplikasikan dalam bentuk karya seni lainnya, yang dalam penelitian kali ini berbentuk sebuah lukis sutra.Lukis sutra pada umumnya memiliki gambaran abstrak, pertama kali muncul di China sebagai salah satu bentuk kesenian ekslusif yang digemari kalangan kerajaan. Pengaplikasian ragam hias Keramik Peranakan China ini diharapkan akan membawa kebaruan dalam bidang fashion dan kesenian juga pengenalan lebih luas pada masyarakat terhadap kebudayaan yang terkandung dalam kedua bentuk kesenian ini. Hasil akhir dari penelitian ini akan berupa koleksi pakaian wanita semi formal bergaya oriental modern
