Norovirus outbreak in a natural playground: A One Health approach
Norovirus constitutes the most frequently identified infectious cause of disease outbreaks associated with untreated recreational water. When investigating outbreaks related to surface water, a One Health approach is insightful. Historically, there has been a focus on potential contamination of recreational water by bird droppings and a recent publication demonstrating human noroviruses in bird faeces suggested this should be investigated in future water-related norovirus outbreaks. Here, we describe a One Health approach investigating a norovirus outbreak in a natural playground. On social media, a large amount of waterfowl were reported to defecate near these playground premises leading to speculations about their potential involvement. Surface water, as well as human and bird faecal specimens, was tested for human noroviruses. Norovirus was found to be the most likely cause of the outbreak but there was no evidence for transmission via waterfowl. Cases had become known on social media prior to notification to the public health service underscoring the potential of online media as an early warning system. New-generation antibiotics for treatment of gram-positive infections: A review with focus on endocarditis and osteomyelitis
Infective endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and osteosynthesis-associated infections are mostly caused by Gram-positive bacteria. They are often difficult to treat and are associated with a poor prognosis. In the past 20 years, nine antibiotic drugs with predominant activity against Gram-positive bacteria have been introduced and approved by the Food and Drug Administration or the European Medicines Agency: ceftaroline, daptomycin, telavancin, dalbavancin, oritavancin, linezolid, tedizolid, delafloxacin, and omadacycline. This narrative review aims to provide an overview on these antibiotics with a special focus on their use in infective endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and osteosynthesis-associated infections. Although some of these approved antibiotics are promising, they should not be used as first-or second-line therapy, awaiting more clinical data

De vegetatie in kalkrijke en kalkarme duingraslanden verschilt niet alleen in soortenrijkdom, maar ook in strategie om fosfor op te nemen uit de bodem. In kalkrijke duinen komen veel mycorrhizaplanten voor met een schimmelnetwerk rond de wortels, maar in kalkarme duinen vooral niet-mycorrhizaplanten. In dit artikel gaan we in op hoe dit komt, wat dit betekent voor de biodiversiteit en de gevoeligheid voor hoge stikstofdepositie, en waarom het zo belangrijk is de pH in de bodem hoog te houden
The association between atopic disorders and keloids: A case-control study
Background: Keloids and atopic disorders share common inducing and maintaining inflammatory pathways that are characterized by T-helper cell 2 cytokines. Aims and Objectives: The objective of this study was to test for associations between keloids and atopic eczema, asthma and hay fever. Materials and Methods: This was a case-control study with 131 patients diagnosed with keloids at our dermatology outpatient clinic between 2000 and 2012. Controls were 258 partners of keloid or sarcoidosis patients. Patient who reported life time prevalences of atopic eczema, asthma and hay fever were assessed using a questionnaire based on The European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) and The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC). Results: The prevalence of asthma was lower in keloid patients (19/131 vs. 20/258, P = 0.035), as was being diagnosed with asthma by a physician (18/131 vs. 19/258, P = 0.039) and using inhalators for asthma (13/131 vs. 7/258, P = 0.02). After adjusting for age and non-European descent the odds ratio for having a keloid was (adjusted OR = 4.44; 95% CI 1.59-12.40) in asthmatics using inhalators. There were no clear and consistent associations found for keloids with atopic eczema or with hay fever. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study shows that keloids may be strongly associated with atopic asthma. Atopic eczema and hay fever do not seem to be correlated with keloid. Further studies are warranted to assess the validity of atopic asthma as a risk factor for the development of keloid scars
Resilience in coastal dune grasslands: pH and soil organic matter effects on P nutrition, plant strategies, and soil communities
Soil organic matter (SOM) and pH are key ecosystem drivers, influencing resilience to environmental change. We tested the separate effects of pH and SOM on nutrient availability, plant strategies, and soil community composition in calcareous and acidic Grey dunes (H2130) with low, intermediate, and/or high SOM, which differ in sensitivity to high atmospheric N deposition. Soil organic matter was mainly important for biomass parameters of plants, microbes, and soil animals, and for microarthropod diversity and network complexity. However, differences in pH led to fundamental differences in P availability and plant strategies, which overruled the normal soil community patterns, and influenced resilience to N deposition. In calcareous dunes with low grass‐encroachment, P availability was low despite high amounts of inorganic P, due to low solubility of calcium phosphates and strong P sorption to Fe oxides at high pH. Calcareous dunes were dominated by low‐competitive arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) plants, which profit from mycorrhiza especially at low P. In acidic dunes with high grass‐encroachment, P availability increased as calcium phosphates dissolved and P sorption weakened with the shift from Fe oxides to Fe‐OM complexes. Weakly sorbed and colloidal P increased, and at least part of the sorbed P was organic. Acidic dunes were dominated by nonmycorrhizal (NM) plants, which increase P uptake through exudation of carboxylates and phosphatase enzymes, which release weakly sorbed P, and disintegrate labile organic P. The shifts in P availability and plant strategies also changed the soil community. Contrary to expectations, the bacterial pathway was more important in acidic than in calcareous dunes, possibly due to exudation of carboxylates and phosphatases by NM plants, which serve as bacterial food resource. Also, the fungal AM pathway was enhanced in calcareous dunes, and fungal feeders more abundant, due to the presence of AM fungi. The changes in soil communities in turn reduced expected differences in N cycling between calcareous and acidic dunes. Our results show that SOM and pH are important, but separate ecosystem drivers in Grey dunes. Differences in resilience to N deposition are mainly due to pH effects on P availability and plant strategies, which in turn overruled soil community patterns
