    Over the last 175 years the British Geological Survey Library has grown and developed into one of the world's major earth science libraries. We have extensive collections of books, maps, journals and BGS publications. We also hold special collections of British geological photographs and archive material, chiefly the historical archives of the BGS. Published material is acquired by exchange with overseas surveys and institutes as well as by purchase. In the past our collections have been enhanced by the incorporation of other collections such as the extensive holdings of the former Overseas Geological Surveys

    Robust D-Optimal Design for Response Functions with a Downturn

    Researchers studying dose-response relationships must allocate limited resources to design points in order to maximize the information gained from the study. D-optimal design is a well-described design that works efficiently to study model parameters. In order to find the D-optimal design, the model that describes the dose-response relationship has to be known. In cases where dose-response relationships show a downturn at high doses, scientists sometimes ignore the downturn to study only the increasing part of the response curve. Here we have two model choices; one describes the overall dose-response relationship, and the other describes only the increasing part of the response curve. The D-optimal designs for these two models will be different and the D-optimal design for one model may not work efficiently for the other model. This research studies robust D-optimal design, a design that works efficiently for both models

    Due to the rapid online expansion of digital learnscapes, resulting in university students engaged in online learning communities, cyberbullying has the potential of being a serious issue for higher education institutions. The effectiveness of educating students and staff in higher education on the impact of cyber bullying has received limited attention in university policy documentation and in the literature on adult cyberbullying. It is this scarceness of policy direction and innovative literature that has driven this study, the development of an educational website to inform students and staff in higher education contexts about cyber safety and the very real consequences of cyber bullying for people's lives. The content on the site is educational, promoting an awareness of staying safe online, digital footprints, digital reputations, and the hazards of remaining exposed online. In describing the development of the site, this study highlights the need for such resources to support students and staff working in higher education places and spaces to understand what constitutes this complex social phenomena, implications of cyber bullying on persons present and future lives, users roles and responsibilities in curbing cyber bullying, help seeking avenues and digital wellness. Findings indicate numerous benefits for the sites' continuation including the range and depth of information for users in higher education spaces and places about socially responsible online behaviour and the potential impact of cyberbullying events on people’s lives. Suggested improvements specific to design and the customization of the content for the target audiences has been instrumental in the redesign and continued development of the site. Recommendations are made in relation to the dissemination of the site across the Australian and offshore Singapore campus

    Shear banding in polymeric fluids under large amplitude oscillatory shear flow

    In this thesis, I theoretically explore shear banding of entangled linear polymer solutions and melts in large amplitude oscillatory shear strain (LAOStrain) and stress (LAOStress) protocols. This work moves beyond that of Moorcroft and Fielding [2013, 2014] who showed time-dependent shear banding in shear startup and step stress protocols. These protocols are only transiently time-dependent. LAOStrain and LAOStress have a sustained time-dependence. I consider the criteria derived in [Moorcroft and Fielding 2013] to predict the onset of shear banding in the transient material response for shear startup and step stress, relative to the triggers of shear banding in LAOStrain and LAOStress. I find that stability to the formation of shear banded flow in the LAOS protocols can be understood - to a good approximation - by the known triggers of shear banding in these simpler transiently time-dependent protocols. I employ the Rolie-Poly (RP) model [Graham et al. 2003] to investigate the existence of shear banding in LAOStrain and LAOStress over a wide range of imposed amplitudes and frequencies. I find shear banding to occur in the alternance state (where time-translational invariance is achieved), even in materials that are known to remain homogeneous at the steady state. For each protocol I consider the relative influence of the constraint-release stress relaxation RP parameter and entanglement number (Z) on the intensity of shear banding across the phase space. I find significant shear banding to occur in both LAOStrain and LAOStress for experimentally-realistic values of Z, both in materials that shear band to steady state, and those that don't. The main results of these investigations are submitted for publication in the Journal of Rheology [Carter et al. 2016]. Finally, I consider the shortcomings of using a single-mode RP model when characterising the full chain dynamics of entangled linear polymers in flow. I employ a multimode approach and fit a power-law spectrum to experimental linear rheology data and investigate time-dependent shear banding in the presence of higher-order relaxation dynamics. For this, I use the simpler shear startup protocol and investigate the limits under which significant shear banding exists for well-entangled polymers and discuss the possible importance of considering edge fracture as a mechanism for shear banding
