Systematic Literature Review Report for the National Child Safeguarding Practice Review into the Sudden Unexpected Death of Infants (SUDI) in families where the children are considered to be at risk of significant harm
Interventions to Improve Safer Sleep Practices in Families With Children Considered to Be at Increased Risk for Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy:A Systematic Review
Background: Advice to families to follow infant care practices known to reduce the risks of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) has led to a reduction in deaths across the world. This reduction has slowed in the last decade with most deaths now occurring in families experiencing social and economic deprivation. A systematic review of the literature was commissioned by the National Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel in England. The review covered three areas: interventions to improve engagement with support services, parental decision-making for the infant sleep environment, and interventions to improve safer sleep practices in families with infants considered to be at risk of SUDI. Aim: To describe the safer sleep interventions tested with families with infants at risk of SUDI and investigate what this literature can tell us about what works to reduce risk and embed safer sleep practices in this group. Methods: Eight online databases were systematically searched in December 2019. Intervention studies that targeted families with infants (0â1 year) at increased risk of SUDI were included. Studies were limited to those from Western Europe, North America or Australasia, published in the last 15 years. The Quality Assessment Tool for Studies with Diverse Designs was applied to assess quality. Data from included studies were extracted for narrative synthesis, including mode of delivery using Michie et al.'s Mode of Delivery Taxonomy. Results: The wider review returned 3,367 papers, with 23 intervention papers. Five types of intervention were identified: (1) infant sleep space and safer sleep education programs, (2) intensive or targeted home visiting services, (3) peer educators/ambassadors, (4) health education/raising awareness interventions, (5) targeted health education messages using digital media. Conclusion: Influencing behavior in families with infants at risk of SUDI has traditionally focused on âgetting messages across,â with interventions predominantly using education and awareness raising mechanisms. This review found evidence of interventions moving from âinformation givingâ to âinformation exchangeâ models using personalized, longer term relationship-building models. This shift may represent an improvement in how safer sleep advice is implemented in families with infants at risk, but more robust evidence of effectiveness is required. Models based on the Mitscherlich equation for describing typical and atypical gas production profiles obtained from in vitro digestibility studies using equine faecal inoculum
Two models are proposed to describe atypical biphasic gas production profiles obtained from in vitro digestibility studies. The models are extensions of the standard Mitscherlich equation, comprising either two Mitscherlich terms or one Mitscherlich and one linear term. Two models that describe typical monophasic gas production curves, the standard Mitscherlich and the France model [a generalised Mitscherlich (root-t) equation], were assessed for comparison. Models were fitted to 25 gas production profiles resulting from incubating feedstuffs with faecal inocula from equines. Seventeen profiles displayed atypical biphasic patterns while the other eight displayed typical monophasic patterns. Models were evaluated using statistical measures of goodness-of-fit and by analysis of residuals. Good agreement was found between observed atypical profiles values and fitted values obtained with the two biphasic models, and both can revert to a simple Mitscherlich allowing them to describe typical monophasic profiles. The models contain kinetic fermentation parameters that can be used in conjunction with substrate degradability information and digesta passage rate to calculate extent of substrate degradation in the rumen or hindgut. Thus, models link the in vitro gas production technique to nutrient supply in the animal by providing information relating to digestion and nutritive value of feedstuffs
Summary: Working Group on QCD and Strong Interactions
In this summary of the considerations of the QCD working group at Snowmass
2001, the roles of quantum chromodynamics in the Standard Model and in the
search for new physics are reviewed, with empahsis on frontier areas in the
field. We discuss the importance of, and prospects for, precision QCD in
perturbative and lattice calculations. We describe new ideas in the analysis of
parton distribution functions and jet structure, and review progress in

An illustrative analysis of atypical gas production profiles obtained from in vitro digestibility studies using fecal inoculum

However, atypical gas production profiles exist whereby at least two consecutive phases of gas
production or additional extraneous features that distort the typical profile are present. Such profiles are more likely to occur with the use of a fecal inoculum and are much less well described.
The presence of multiple phases or non-descript extraneous features makes it difficult to apply
directly recommended modeling approaches such as standard response functions or classical growth
functions. To overcome such difficulties, extensions of the Mitscherlich equation and a numerical
modeling option also based on the Mitscherlich are explored. The numerical modeling option uses
an estimate of relative rate obtained from the smoothed data profile and an estimate of maximum
gas produced together with any lag time information drawn from the raw data to construct a simple
Mitscherlich equation. In summary, this article illustrates the analysis of atypical gas production
profiles obtained using a fecal inoculum and explores the methodology of numerical modeling to

Non-perturbative effects and the resummed Higgs transverse momentum distribution at the LHC
We investigate the form of the non-perturbative parameterization in both the
impact parameter (b) space and transverse momentum (p_T) space resummation
formalisms for the transverse momentum distribution of single massive bosons
produced at hadron colliders. We propose to analyse data on Upsilon
hadroproduction as a means of studying the non-perturbative contribution in
processes with two gluons in the initial state. We also discuss the theoretical
errors on the resummed Higgs transverse momentum distribution at the LHC
arising from the non-perturbative contribution.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figure
Joint resummation in electroweak boson production
We present a phenomenological application of the joint resummation formalism
to electroweak annihilation processes at measured boson momentum Q_T. This
formalism simultaneously resums at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy large
threshold and recoil corrections to partonic scattering. We invert the impact
parameter transform using a previously described analytic continuation
procedure. This leads to a well-defined, resummed perturbative cross section
for all nonzero Q_T, which can be compared to resummation carried out directly
in Q_T space. From the structure of the resummed expressions, we also determine
the form of nonperturbative corrections to the cross section and implement
these into our analysis. We obtain a good description of the transverse

Improving engagement with services to prevent Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) in families with children at risk of significant harm: A systematic review of evidence
This paper reports part of a wider systematic review commissioned by the English National Safeguarding Panel on Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI). The wider review covered three areas: interventions to improve safer sleep practices in highârisk families, interventions to improve engagement with services and decision making by parents at high risk of SUDI about infant sleep environments. Here, we report the qualitative and quantitative studies reviewed under the engagement strand. Parental engagement is understood to be a multidimensional task for health and social care professionals comprising attitudinal, relational and behavioural components. Following a PROSPERO registered systematic review synthesizing the three strands outlined, 28 papers were found to be relevant in the review of interventions to improve engagement with services in families with children at risk of significant harm through abuse or neglect. No studies were found that specifically focused on engagement of families at high risk for SUDI, so these wider engagement studies were included. The different types of intervention reported in the included studies are described under two broad themes: Enablers (including parental motivation and working with families) and Barriers. Given the focus in the studies on interventions that support parental engagement, the Enablers theme is more extensive than the Barriers reported although all studies noted wellâunderstood barriers. The evidence underpinning these interventions and approaches are reviewed in this paper. We conclude that effective engagement is facilitated by experienced professionals given time to develop supportive nonâjudgemental relationships with families in their homes, working longâterm, linking with communities and other services. While these conclusions have been drawn from wider studies aimed at reducing child maltreatment, we emphasize lessons to be drawn for SUDI prevention work with families with children at risk of significant harm
Review: Effects of Ractopamine Hydrochloride (Paylean) on welfare indicators for market weight pigs
This review summarizes the effects of ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) dose (5, 7.5, 10, and 20 mg/kg) on market weight pig welfare indicators. Ractopamine hydrochloride (trade name Paylean) is a ÎČ-adrenergic agonist that was initially approved in the U.S. in 1999 at doses of 5 to 20 mg/kg to improve feed efficiency and carcass leanness. However, anecdotal reports suggested that RAC increased the rate of non-ambulatory (fatigued and injured) pigs at U.S. packing plants. This led to the addition of a caution statement to the Paylean label, and a series of research studies investigating the effects of RAC on pig welfare. Early research indicated that: (1) regardless of RAC administration, fatigued (non-ambulatory, non-injured) pigs are in a state of metabolic acidosis; (2) aggressive handling increases stress responsiveness at 20 mg/kg RAC, while 5 mg/kg reduces stress responsiveness to aggressive handling. Given this information, dosage range for Paylean was changed in 2006 to 5 to 10 mg/kg in market weight pigs. Subsequent research on RAC demonstrated that: (1) RAC has minimal effects on mortality, lameness, and home pen behavior; (2) RAC fed pigs demonstrated inconsistent prevalence and intensity of aggressive behaviors; (3) RAC fed pigs may be more difficult to handle at doses above 5 mg/kg; and (4) RAC fed pigs may have increased stress responsiveness and higher rates of non-ambulatory pigs when subjected to aggressive handling, especially when 20 mg/kg of RAC is fed
Supersymmetric Seesaw without Singlet Neutrinos: Neutrino Masses and Lepton-Flavour Violation
We consider the supersymmetric seesaw mechanism induced by the exchange of
heavy SU(2)_W triplet states, rather than `right-handed' neutrino singlets, to
generate neutrino masses. We show that in this scenario the neutrino flavour
structure tested at low-energy in the atmospheric and solar neutrino
experiments is directly inherited from the neutrino Yukawa couplings to the
triplets. This allows us to predict the ratio of the tau --> mu gamma (or tau
--> e gamma) and mu --> e gamma decay rates in terms of the low-energy neutrino
parameters. Moreover, once the model is embedded in a grand unified model,
quark-flavour violation can be linked to lepton-flavour violation.Comment: 26 LaTeX pages, 10 postscript figures, uses epsfig and axodraw.
