    How to Engage the Crowds to Create Value? Evidence from the Pathfinder Arena Case

    Reward-based crowdfunding has emerged in recent years as an interesting channel business that can leverage to obtain new financial resources outside the traditional ones. In this study, we explore how the creators of a reward-based crowdfunding campaign have engaged the crowd to create value and co-create knowledge to reduce both financial and market risks. Accordingly, we analyze the case study of the Kickstarter Campaign for Pathfinder Arena, a board game created by Giochi Uniti, an Italian Gaming Company. Through the lens of the social identity theory, we show that backers can generate the feedback processes needed to improve the product, when they want to belong in a community and when they want to interact with the creators. This research could have important implications for both researchers and future creators of reward-based crowdfunding projects, showing them the way to implement some instrument for involving the crowd to generate value

    Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) is an advanced cement-based material in which fabrics used as reinforcement can bring significant loads in tension, allowing architects and engineers to use thin cross-sections. Previous research projects, developed during the last 10 years mainly in Germany, Israel and the USA, have shown the capabilities of such a material.     Assessment of fibrinolytic activity by measuring the lysis time of a tissue-factor-induced clot: a feasibility evaluation.

    A clot lysis time assay in which a tissue factor—induced fibrin clot is lysed by exogenously added tissue plasminogen activator has been recently reported. We evaluated the feasibility of clot lysis time in a routine hemostasis laboratory, and its correlation with thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 levels and changes with aging in 185 healthy participants. Clot lysis time was assessed by monitoring changes in turbidity during clot formation and subsequent lysis using a computerized kinetic spectrophotometric microtiter plate. After preliminary experiments, 100 and 160 ng/mL tissue plasminogen activator concentrations were chosen for the study. Clot lysis time was calculated by a new mathematical analysis of the lysis curve based on discrete derivative. Clot lysis time, thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 plasma levels showed a normal distribution. For both concentrations of tissue plasminogen activator, clot lysis time progressively increased with increase in age (P < .0001) and was significantly correlated with thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor antigen, thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor activity, and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 antigen (at least P < .01). During linear regression analysis, thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 antigen were found to significantly influence clot lysis time (at least P < .01). Clot lysis time determination has a good laboratory performance. Our new method of calculation is independent of the time of reading and allows a more accurate and consistent detection of both short and prolonged lysis times. Our data suggest the feasibility of the use of this test in the work of routine hemostasis laboratory

    Synthesis of Chitosan-Coated Silver Nanoparticle Bioconjugates and Their Antimicrobial Activity against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria

    The increase in multidrug-resistant bacteria represents a true challenge in the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. For this reason, research on the development of new potential antibacterial strategies is essential. Here, we describe the development of a green system for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) bioconjugated with chitosan. We optimized a Prunus cerasus leaf extract as a source of silver and its conversion to chitosan–silver bioconjugates (CH-AgNPs). The AgNPs and CH-AgNPs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), and zeta potential measurement (Z-potential). The cytotoxic activity of AgNPs and CH-AgNPs was assessed on Vero cells using the 3-[4.5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2.5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) cell proliferation assay. The antibacterial activity of AgNPs and CH-AgNPs synthesized using the green system was determined using the broth microdilution method. We evaluated the antimicrobial activity against standard ATCC and clinically isolated multisensitive (MS) and multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR) Escherichia coli (E. coli), Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), Klebsiella pneumonia (K. pneumoniae), and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assays and the broth dilution method. The results of the antibacterial studies demonstrate that the silver chitosan bioconjugates were able to inhibit the growth of MDR strains more effectively than silver nanoparticles alone, with reduced cellular toxicity. These nanoparticles were stable in solution and had wide-spectrum antibacterial activity. The synthesis of silver and silver chitosan bioconjugates from Prunus cerasus leaf extracts may therefore serve as a simple, ecofriendly, noncytotoxic, economical, reliable, and safe method to produce antimicrobial compounds with low cytotoxicity

    Risk Factors for Lung Cancer in the Province of Lecce: Results from the PROTOS Case–Control Study in Salento (Southern Italy)

    In the province of Lecce (southern Italy), a higher incidence of lung cancer (LC) among men compared to regional and national data was reported. In a sub-area in the center of the province (cluster area), the incidence and mortality for LC was even higher. PROTOS is a case-control study aimed at investigating possible risk factors for LC in the province area. A total of 442 patients with LC and 1326 controls matched by sex and age living in the province of Lecce for at least 10 years were enrolled and georeferenced; they filled in a questionnaire with their personal information and exposures. For each risk factor, an Odds Ratio adjusted for all the other variables was calculated. The risk of LC increased with excessive use of alcohol in women, for those subjects with a family cancer history, for each increase in pack/year of cigarettes, for men more exposed considering the industrial district in the cluster area, and for those using pesticides in agriculture without wearing personal protective equipment. The higher incidence of adenocarcinoma in both sexes suggests that, in addition to cigarette smoking, concurrent exposures to other environmental, occupational, and life-style factors may play a role in increased cancer risk and should be more deeply explored
