    STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN FIRST YEAR CHEMISTRY – ONLINE VS FACE TO FACE

    Rapid campus closure and an unexpected transition to an online offering of a large first year chemistry unit provided an opportunity to explore the level of student engagement and factors associated with success in this online transition. In this presentation, we compare the standard, face-to-face offering in 2019 to the online offering in 2020 by examining the completion of weekly assessment tasks and the uptake of a variety of learning activities. All measures of engagement have been correlated to the students’ final scores in the unit. We found that students were able to quickly adapt to using the technology including accessing live streamed or recorded lectures, joining online tutorials and discussion forum use. Participation in in-class polling was unchanged, and was associated with the same increase in final score. The only learning activity with a significant change was tutorials; face-to-face tutorial attendance gained students 2.7 marks out of 100 in their final score per tutorial, whereas online tutorial attendance only gained 1.8 marks per tutorial. The decrease in completion of the weekly low stakes assessment tasks over the semester was unchanged, but overall quiz scores were slightly higher. Completion of online practical activities was the same in both years. Scores for a video recorded practical activity with drop-in consultation were 0.9/10 lower compared to the identical activity and worksheet conducted face to face. Our data show that some aspects of learning can be moved online seamlessly, but face-to-face practical sessions and tutorials have a greater impact on student success than online versions

    Familial hypercholesterolaemia in children and adolescents from 48 countries: a cross-sectional study

    Background: Approximately 450 000 children are born with familial hypercholesterolaemia worldwide every year, yet only 2·1% of adults with familial hypercholesterolaemia were diagnosed before age 18 years via current diagnostic approaches, which are derived from observations in adults. We aimed to characterise children and adolescents with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH) and understand current approaches to the identification and management of familial hypercholesterolaemia to inform future public health strategies. Methods: For this cross-sectional study, we assessed children and adolescents younger than 18 years with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of HeFH at the time of entry into the Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) registry between Oct 1, 2015, and Jan 31, 2021. Data in the registry were collected from 55 regional or national registries in 48 countries. Diagnoses relying on self-reported history of familial hypercholesterolaemia and suspected secondary hypercholesterolaemia were excluded from the registry; people with untreated LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) of at least 13·0 mmol/L were excluded from this study. Data were assessed overall and by WHO region, World Bank country income status, age, diagnostic criteria, and index-case status. The main outcome of this study was to assess current identification and management of children and adolescents with familial hypercholesterolaemia. Findings: Of 63 093 individuals in the FHSC registry, 11 848 (18·8%) were children or adolescents younger than 18 years with HeFH and were included in this study; 5756 (50·2%) of 11 476 included individuals were female and 5720 (49·8%) were male. Sex data were missing for 372 (3·1%) of 11 848 individuals. Median age at registry entry was 9·6 years (IQR 5·8-13·2). 10 099 (89·9%) of 11 235 included individuals had a final genetically confirmed diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia and 1136 (10·1%) had a clinical diagnosis. Genetically confirmed diagnosis data or clinical diagnosis data were missing for 613 (5·2%) of 11 848 individuals. Genetic diagnosis was more common in children and adolescents from high-income countries (9427 [92·4%] of 10 202) than in children and adolescents from non-high-income countries (199 [48·0%] of 415). 3414 (31·6%) of 10 804 children or adolescents were index cases. Familial-hypercholesterolaemia-related physical signs, cardiovascular risk factors, and cardiovascular disease were uncommon, but were more common in non-high-income countries. 7557 (72·4%) of 10 428 included children or adolescents were not taking lipid-lowering medication (LLM) and had a median LDL-C of 5·00 mmol/L (IQR 4·05-6·08). Compared with genetic diagnosis, the use of unadapted clinical criteria intended for use in adults and reliant on more extreme phenotypes could result in 50-75% of children and adolescents with familial hypercholesterolaemia not being identified. Interpretation: Clinical characteristics observed in adults with familial hypercholesterolaemia are uncommon in children and adolescents with familial hypercholesterolaemia, hence detection in this age group relies on measurement of LDL-C and genetic confirmation. Where genetic testing is unavailable, increased availability and use of LDL-C measurements in the first few years of life could help reduce the current gap between prevalence and detection, enabling increased use of combination LLM to reach recommended LDL-C targets early in life

    Yolk corticosterone in the Gouldian Finch (Erythrura gouldiae)

    Maternal hormones are thought to play an important role in determining the rate of evolutionary adaptation. Previous avian studies have shown that the transfer of maternally derived hormones, such as progesterone and testosterone, to the egg, affects many aspects of offspring development. In contrast, the impact of maternal corticosterone (CORT) is much less studied. CORT, the principal avian glucocorticoid hormone, is thought to be passively transferred to the egg yolk from the maternal plasma. Maternal CORT may play a role in determining the development of young birds by adaptively programming offspring for their environment. We developed a protocol which effectively quantifies yolk CORT concentrations both within and across clutches, using solid-phase extraction and radioimmunoassay. We hypothesised that Gouldian Finch (Erythrura gouldiae) mothers would differ in their yolk CORT concentrations and that maternal condition would relate to absolute yolk CORT deposition. We found variation in yolk CORT concentrations between clutches, whilst yolk CORT increased with egg number in the first breeding season and negatively correlated with yolk mass. Yet, contrary to our predictions, neither maternal mass nor clutch size showed any relationship to yolk CORT concentrations or to egg or yolk mass. Our data suggest that yolk CORT varies with maternal identity for reasons which do not appear to be linked to maternal condition. Further research is needed to determine the link between maternal and egg yolk concentrations at the individual level.     Behavioural ecology meets oncology: quantifying the recovery of animal behaviour to a transient exposure to a cancer risk factor

    International audienceWildlife is increasingly exposed to sublethal transient cancer risk factors, including mutagenic substances, which activates their anti-cancer defences, promotes tumourigenesis, and may negatively impact populations. Little is known about how exposure to cancer risk factors impacts the behaviour of wildlife. Here, we investigated the effects of a sublethal, short-term exposure to a carcinogen at environmentally relevant concentrations on the activity patterns of wild Girardia tigrina planaria during a two-phase experiment, consisting of a 7-day exposure to cadmium period followed by a 7-day recovery period. To comprehensively explore the effects of the exposure on activity patterns, we employed the double hierarchical generalized linear model framework which explicitly models residual intraindividual variability in addition to the mean and variance of the population. We found that exposed planaria were less active compared to unexposed individuals and were able to recover to pre-exposure activity levels albeit with a reduced variance in activity at the start of the recovery phase. Planaria showing high activity levels were less predictable with larger daily activity variations and higher residual variance. Thus, the shift in behavioural variability induced by an exposure to a cancer risk factor can be quantified using advanced tools from the field of behavioural ecology. This is required to understand how tumourous processes affect the ecology of species
