    Analiza kliniczna wydalania jodu z moczem u chorych na zróżnicowane raki tarczycy w trakcie terapii L-tyroksyną

    Introduction: Urinary iodine concentrations were analyzed in the morning urine samples of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Material and methods: The analyzed group included 572 DTC patients who were treated with radioiodine or hospitalized for evaluation of radioiodine treatment effects in 2009 at the Institute of Oncology in Gliwice. Ioduria was analyzed by PAMM (Program Against Micronutrient Malnutrition) method before rhTSH administration. A total of 545 tests were performed during L-thyroxine treatment and 27 after L-thyroxine withdrawal. Results: Median L-thyroxine dose was 150 &#956;g/day. Median ioduria was 127.5 &#956;g/L during L-thyroxine therapy and 134 &#956;g/L after the L-thyroxine withdrawal. No distinct relation between ioduria and L-thyroxine dose was observed. Ioduria < 200 &#956;g/L was observed in over 90% of patients and this cut-off was chosen for the reference range. Only 1.2% of patients showed a distinct stable iodine contamination (ioduria &#8805; 300 &#956;g/L). Conclusions: Urinary iodine concentrations in differentiated thyroid cancer patients treated with L-thyroxine vary in a wide range and do not show a clear relation with L-thyroxine dose. (Pol J Endocrinol 2010; 61 (5): 458-461)Wstęp: W pracy przeanalizowano stężenie jodu w porannej próbce moczu u chorych na zróżnicowanego raka tarczycy (DTC, differentiated thyroid cancer). Materiały i metody: Badano 572 chorych na DTC po operacji, którzy w 2009 roku byli hospitalizowani w celu leczenia jodem radioaktywnym lub oceny jego wyników. Stężenie jodu w moczu oznaczano metodą PAMM (Program Against Micronutrient Malnutrition). W trakcie leczenia L-tyroksyną wykonano 545 badań, 27 po przerwie w stosowaniu L-tyroksyny. Wyniki: Mediana dawki L-tyroksyny wynosiła 150 &#956;g/dzień. Mediana dobowego wydalania jodu z moczem wynosiła 127,5 &#956;g/L, a po odstawieniu L-tyroksyny 134 &#956;g/L. Nie obserwowano zależności stężenia jodu w moczu od stosowanej dawki tyroksyny. Jodurię < 200 &#956;g/L obserwowano u ponad 90% chorych i ten zakres uznano za referencyjny. Kontaminację stabilnym jodem wykazano u 1,2% (joduria &#8805; 300 &#956;g/L). Wnioski: Stężenia jodu w moczu u chorych na zróżnicowanego raka tarczycy, leczonych L-tyroksyną, wahają się w szerokim przedziale wartości i nie korelują z dawką L-tyroksyny.     CATECHOLAMINES AND β2-ADRENOCEPTOR GENE EXPRESSION BEFORE AND AFTER MAXIMAL INCREMENTAL CYCLE TEST IN YOUNG ICE HOCKEY PLAYERS: RELATION TO WORK PERFORMED

    The aim of this study was to assess the plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations as well as whole blood β2-adrenoceptor gene (ADRB2) expression in young ice hockey players before and immediately after exercise in relation to performed work. Nineteen Youth National Team ice hockey players were subjected to the maximal incremental cycloergometer exercise. The test was done in the pre-competitive phase of training. Among many parameters the plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline concentrations and ADRB2 gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were determined before and after exercise. The average performed work was 3261.3 ± 558.3 J · kg-1 and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) for all players was 53.85 ± 3.91 mL · kg-1 min-1. The geometric mean of the ADRB2 gene expression was statistically significantly different before and after exercise (P ≤ 0.05), while adrenaline and noradrenaline levels in plasma significantly increased after exercise. In the analysed group of athletes we found that initial level of plasma noradrenaline correlated with the performed work (r = - 0.55, P < 0.014) and normalized ADRB2 expression before the exercise correlated with the work done by them (r = 0.48, P<0.039). However, no statistically significant correlations were found between the plasma adrenaline or noradrenaline concentrations and ADRB2 gene expression in peripheral blood of the players.     Dietary trends among Polish women in 2011–2022—cross-sectional study of food consumption frequency among women aged 20–50 in Silesia region, Poland

    BackgroundWomen’s nutrition should be different from that of men. Women have lower energy requirements than men. And the need for certain vitamins and minerals is higher in women, this applies to iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and vitamin B9 (folic acid). This is related to hormonal changes including menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding and the onset of menopause. Through hormonal changes and the changing physiological state, women are at greater risk of anaemia, bone weakness and osteoporosis.The aim of the study was to assess changes in the dietary pattern among women from the Silesian Agglomeration in Poland between 2011 and 2022.Material and methodThe survey was conducted in 2011 (March–May 2011) and in 2022 (October–November 2022) among women living in the Silesian Agglomeration (Silesia region) in Poland aged 20–50. After consideration of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 745 women were included in the final analysis, including 437 women screened in 2011 and 308 women screened in 2022.The research tool used in this publication was a survey questionnaire consisting of 2 parts. The first part of the questionnaire consisted of demographic data. The second part of the study focused on the dietary habits of the women surveyed and the frequency of consumption of individual foods (FFQ).ResultsMore women in 2022 ate breakfast than in 2011 (77.6% vs. 63.8% p &lt; 0.001), were more likely to eat breakfast I at home (73.1% vs. 62.5%; p &lt; 0.001), were more likely to eat breakfast II (39.0% vs. 35.2%; p = 0.001), were more likely to eat breakfast II at home (28.6% vs. 19.2%; p = 0.002), and were more likely to eat lunch at work (16.6% vs. 3.4%; p &lt; 0.001). Women in 2022 were more likely to consume fast-food (p = 0.001), salty snacks (chips, crisps) (p &lt; 0.001) and sweets (p &lt; 0.001). Women in 2022 were more likely to consume whole-grain bread (p &lt; 0.001), wholemeal pasta (p &lt; 0.001), brown rice (p &lt; 0.001), oatmeal (p &lt; 0.001), buckwheat groats (p = 0.06), and bran (p &lt; 0.001) than women in 2011. They were less likely to consume white bread (p &lt; 0.0001), light pasta (p = 0.004), white rice (p = 0.008) and cornflakes (p &lt; 0.001) in 2022.Women in 2022 were significantly more likely to consume vegetables (p &lt; 0.001) than women in 2011.ConclusionEating habits in Silesia region women changed between 2011 and 2022. In 2022, women were more likely to choose cereal products considered health-promoting and rich in dietary fiber (including whole-grain bread, whole-grain pasta, oatmeal, bran) were more likely to consume vegetables, dry pulses and vegetarian dinners, and consumed less meat, cured meats, fish and dairy products.     Background and Objectives: Testing for anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies both before and after transplantation is of fundamental significance for the success of lung transplantation. The aim of this study was the evaluation of anti-HLA immunization of patients before and after lung transplant who were subjected to qualification and transplantation. Materials and Methods: Prior to the transplantation, patients were examined for the presence of IgG class anti-HLA antibodies (anti-human leukocyte antigen), the so-called panel-reactive antibodies (PRA), using the flow cytometry method. After the transplantation, the class and specificity of anti-HLA antibodies (also IgG) were determined using Luminex. Results: In the group examined, the PRA results ranged from 0.1% to 66.4%. Low (30%) and average (30–80%) immunization was found in only 9.7% of the group examined. Presence of class I anti-HLA antibodies with MFI (mean fluorescence intensity) greater than 1000 was found in 42.7% of the patients examined, while class II anti-HLA antibodies were found in 38.4%. Immunization levels before and after the transplantation were compared. In 10.87% of patients, DSA antibodies (donor-specific antibodies) with MFI of over 1000 were found. Conclusions: It seems that it is possible to confirm the correlation between pre- and post-transplantation immunization with the use of the two presented methods of determining IgG class anti-HLA antibodies by increasing the size of the group studied and conducting a long-term observation thereof

    The aim of the study was to examine iodine concentration in urine among the students of the Faculty of Pharmacy Medical University of Silesia in Katowice. Materials and Methods: Females filled anonymous questionnaire. It helped identify factors which may affect the iodine concentration. The study included 101 students. Morning urine samples was measured with PAMM method. Results: The average iodine concentration was 103,50565,71 μg/l. 49,5% of students had physiological concentration of iodine in urine. 7,9% students showed severe iodine deficiency (*20 μg/l), 16,8% had iodine concentration 20–50 μg/l, while a slight deficiency of this element in urine (50–100 μg/l) occurred in 25,8% of respondents.Cel pracy obejmował oznaczanie stężenia jodu w moczu wśród studentek Wydziału Farmaceutycznego Śląskiego Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Katowicach. Materiał i metody: Badane kobiety wypełniły anonimową ankietę. Miała ona pomóc w określeniu czynników, które mogą mieć wpływ na gospodarkę jodową ustroju. Wartość jodurii poniżej 100 μg/l świadczy o niedoborze jodu w organizmie. Badaniem objęto 101 studentek, u których przy użyciu metody PAMM określano stężenie jodu w porannej próbce moczu. Wyniki: Średnia wartość jodurii wynosiła 103,50565,71 μg/l. 49,5% studentek miało prawidłowe stężenie jodu w moczu, natomiast pozostałe wykazywały niedostateczną podaż tego pierwiastka z dietą. 7,9% studentek miało ciężki niedobór jodu w moczu (*20 μg/l), 16,8% posiadało jodurię w granicach 20– 50 μg/l, natomiast niewielki niedobór tego pierwiastka w moczu (50–100 μg/l) występował u 25,8% badanych

    Serum levels of Visfatin, Omentin and Irisin in patients with end stage lung disease before and after lung transplantation

    BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate serum concentrations of visfatin, irisin, and omentin in patients with end-stage lung diseases (ESLD) before and after lung transplantation (LTx) and to find relationship between adipokines levels and clinical outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen consecutive lung transplant recipients (six males and seven females; age 32.0±14.2 years; body mass index (BMI) 21.8±5.3 kg/m²) who underwent lung transplantation with initial diagnosis of respiratory failure due to cystic fibrosis (CF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) were included. Visfatin, irisin, and omentin serum levels were assayed using commercially available ELISA kits at four time points: the day of LTx (day 0), 72 hours (day 3), one month (day 30) and three months (day 90) after LTx. RESULTS: Omentin serum concentration decreased significantly within three days after LTx (350.5±302.0 to 200.0±0.90 ng/mL; p<0.05), while visfatin serum levels decreased later, 30 days after Ltx (4.81±3.78 to 0.78±0.35 [0.4–1.1] pg/mL; p<0.05). Downregulated serum levels of both adipokines remained stable for the next two months (256.0 [201.7–642.9] ng/mL and 0.77±0.76 pg/mL, respectively; p<0.05). Serum levels of irisin were unchanged before and after Ltx. Immunosuppressive regimen did not affect serum levels of the analyzed adipokines. CONCLUSIONS: The study showed for the first time serum omentin and visfatin levels to be decreased after LTx in ESLD patients. Successful LTx contributes to the improvement of impaired lung function parameters and attenuation of ongoing inflammatory process, resulting in altered visfatin and omentin serum levels. Additional influence of immunosuppressive treatment on omentin and visfatin serum concentration cannot be excluded
